Defines entertainment =improving quality of life QOL in the next 10yrs is to improve this, first area is health, want to find blue ocean

QOL could do wearable devices but wants to leapfrog that to non wearable devices by Nintendo, want to propose healthy structure for day2day

Thinks there will be synergies between games platform and QOL platform

QOL platform with roll out in April 2015,integrated with games, business plan details in 2014, business impact in fiscal year mar 2016

Mr. Iwata now going into how Nintendo is going to expand into new fields. He looks back the past 10 years of his tenure, saying he’s had some success in expanding the gamer population by bringing Wii and DS to people who may not have played games in the past before.

What’s Mr. Iwata going to focus on for the next 10 years? The main theme: enhancing the quality of life through entertainment. The key word is health, Mr. Iwata says. Citing a flood of wearable devices already on the market, he says Nintendo is trying out something completely new: non-wearables to monitor your health.

For those of you wondering what non-wearables are, Nintendo will unveil the details of its new business during 2014 and launch it for the fiscal year through March 2016. Mr. Iwata’s speech is now over. And now the Q&A session is starting.

I have trouble understanding what this is supposed to mean. Wii Fit U seemingly bombed, the only fitness thing left that's selling is Just Dance by Ubisoft on Wii, but it's starting to decline as well.

Wii Relax lives. Not but seriously, Nintendo spent a great deal of time and money working with Tokohoku University on the project. It will mutate into whatever this product is.

If its just a third pillar thats not related with their traditional gaming platforms then I'm all for it. Don't see the problem with that. If that's their next gaming platform.......the fuck Nintendo.

Nintendo may not be releasing its popular franchise on other platforms, but Mr. Iwata says the company will license Nintendo game character rights to new partners.

It's obviously not their next platform, but they are actually putting dev resources on this when they can't even fucking support their real systems.

I think they are self conscious about selling lethargy to children and dont want to be stuck with that mantra...hence the Wii and Wii Board that "required" you get more active

I get the feeling they may be a late to the party on that one.

Yea the whole extensive health metrics is already in full effect. I don't see them providing something novel enough to edge out Fitbit and Nike, especially if they plan on making something completely standalone.

Wildcard berths that can't beat teams without a winning record should have homefield advantage
Non-wearables, eh?

Nintendo, if you create a wireless catheter you'll have it made in the shade.

Knowing nothing about the devices they're planning or the market in which such devices would be competing, I don't have a strong reaction to this information. I certainly don't see any reason why Nintendo shouldn't consider unconventional platforms that might connect with a broad audience and sidestep direct competition with tablets/smartphones.
