Knack new gameplay

Whoa, those crap quality vids aren't doing the game justice.

Yeah, thedy really need to get some better media out for this title.

All the videos out there are low resolution and don't show off the more intricate details of a game like this.

This isn't a big scale game that just looks mind blowing in any format.

Sony needs to get some HD 1080P media out pronto!

I'm leaning more and more towards picking this up. If they polish it up a bit and can throw one more "hook" at me I'm there.

Looks like it has real potential but I don't understand how this is the same guy who did shadow of the colossus. Regardless, hope it turns out well.

The cars don't do anything when he jumps on them..
And the bodies disappear instantly :/
Looks fun but I'll assume this will eventually be on PS+ for free, I just can't pay 60 dollars for this.

Is that not assuming that it IS a $60 title? I think we'll see more price points across the board this gen.

When it was first revealed it thought it was kind of a mediocre looking game but the more I see on it the more interest I have.

Doesn't look anywhere near as good as Super Magnetic Neo. That said, I reckon it'll be a fun little time-passer when it launches. My gf will probably like it - not anywhere near as much a a Mario game - but she'll like it.

It is amazing just how much anybody other than Nintendo struggles to make anything like a Nintendo game.

I really want to like this game, but man... so far it's looking like an experience I'd expect from a PS2/Xbox title. There seems to be very little potential interaction with the environment, which are mostly barren boxy corridors, and the scripted events such as the humans running away from the fence, are almost insultingly archaic. Not only that, but it looks like Knack's size and matter-type is predetermined for each area/level. I think it would be interesting if Knack's growth was more dependent on the player's ability to collect matter without taking damage, and you could progress through certain levels or gain access to items, areas, etc depending on your size and/or matter-type at the time. Maybe this is the case and just uninformed.

I feel like there is a lot of potential in the a number of the game's concepts that aren't being realized, and in all honesty, I expect more from a first party next-gen title.

To be honest, it looks quite boring. Definitely my least anticipated PS4 title.

I'm gonna have to agree with you. The world looks so empty, so... blah. I really hope that this game gets better the next time we see it. To me it almost seems like its not ready to be shown yet. They've got several months left to add more life to this game cause as it stands right now I'm not gonna be picking this up.

Not really feeling it, looks a little stale to me however it also seems like it may be something I'd need to play and feel the flow of to get.

davepoobond

you can't put a price on sparks
seems like it'll be fun, but it also seems a little boring at the same time. i don't have any problem with the game being designed to have parts where you're intentionally supposed to be small/big or even if the game is in corridors.

i'm sure once the game is actually finished and there's a story that connects it all together it'll be cool.

This is the only next gen title that interests me along with Witness, Below, Killer Instinct, and to an extent FFXV.

With everything being in a realistic setting game starring a man holding a gun this title is showing some hope that fantasy world game deserves to exist while published by a big studio.

Honestly that WiiU game (wonderful?) looks graphically better than this. Don't make sense.

this is probably a psn game?

there's some lighting effects going on that aren't there in wonderful 101. wonderful 101 is more colorful and the gameplay is slightly less lego star warsy.

Man, this game looks even more boring that the CG trailers suggest.

Stick to designing hardware Cerny.

Wikipedia said:
Cerny's first major success is usually cited as Marble Madness in which he, at age 18, acted as the designer. For years he worked with Sega in Japan and the United States, where he worked on Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[4] He was the vice president and then president of Universal Interactive Studios. He has worked extensively with Naughty Dog (on the Crash Bandicoot, Jak and Daxter series and the first Uncharted game), Insomniac Games (on the Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank series and Resistance series), and Sony.

I'd say his game design pedigree is at least as strong as his hardware pedigree. Probably stronger.

Wasn't impressed at first but then it really grew on me. Loved the last level. Will definitely get this at launch, if I get a PS4.

Knack looks much creative than the generic new 3D Mario that Nintendo showed at E3.

-Speechless-

Even if the gameplay sucks I'll still be getting this. I love 3D platformers (even though this barely has any) and I hope that if this becomes a success we'll see more of them.

That and I fucking love Cerny.

Are you one of those guys that bought Remember Me out of Principle?

Same here, I was actually starting to flake a little due to all the negativity coming out from some vocal GAFfers, but now? Now my faith is back full force and IT SHALL NOT BE SWAYED.

PR so damn good make you wanna buy games out of sympathy.

You don't love him, you barely know him. Slow the fuck down, sister.

Thank god someone said it.

It looks like a perfect "old school" game in the vein of the titles mentioned like Crash.

It should be a welcome addition to the launch. Not the most anticipated title certainly, but one worthy of attention in a busy launch.

Crash never looked that empty, nor seemed that bland. Nor any other "old school" game that was good.

I'd say his game design pedigree is at least as strong as his hardware pedigree. Probably stronger.

Too bad Knack says differently.

There was a lot of other nonsense I read in this thread but it's too much for me to address without totally shitting it up. But, really when was the last time you guys played a platformer? So much optimism, it reminds me of myself back during Sonic Heroes/Shadow/06.

"It's just a preview, they'll fix it when they release it."

They didn't.

I think this is just one of those games that doesn't exactly demo well, at least I hope so. Still, as far as exclusives are concerned, I'm still kinda leaning more towards Killzone right now in regards to which game I'm going to be picking up (I don't think I'll have enough money for both).

Wish it was a bit more open and platform-y. Like Spyro or something. But honestly it looks good, and these games seem so rare these days. :)

I think a lot of my interest in the game is driven by the hunger for 3D platformers, a genre that has practically fallen off the face of the earth.

I'm super stoked for Super Mario 3D world and Sonic's Lost World for that very reason. I think it's hard to make a judgment on Knack because he's the newcomer.

That thing that makes Knack stand out is his ability to grow big and small as well as his access to a variety of different elemental forms (not unlike Mario's new cat suit and other famous suits).

That could lead to a lot of really compelling gameplay, but it is not something I have seen yet in the footage. I hope they showcase levels in the future that really highlight what makes it compelling.

I see this game being one of the first free full PS4 games.

I currently have it preordered but I don't know if it will stay

I want it, but I want more platform out of it.

Seems like a pretty polarizing game. Personally I don't really "get" the people splooging over it. Is there some direct feed footage or 60fps footage? The gameplay looks bland to me but that might just be the level they demoed and not the whole game. Visually though I can't make out anything all too impressive based on the youtube footage.

From what we have seen so far of the two titles I agree entirely. What was so creative about the new 3D mario. Cat mario lmao give me a break. The principle of knack being able to take in different objects and therefore change powers, be affected by different hazards, do different moves, and grow is more creative than anything out of 3D mario.

Note I am saying more creative, not a better platformer.

I just hope it is more ambitious than what has been shown.

Wow.

Over 100 Enemy types.

Over 200 secret rooms. Random loot for power ups - 50 different kinds.

Looking at the four little pieces they're showing in this demo, I'm a lot more intrigued than I was. The outdoor, more open/platformy parts look GREAT.

Loving the vibe. Little Stealth Knack's run animation is perfectly charming.

And LOL at the part where Knack is just throwing cars around.
So far to me it sounds good,we only seen a little of the game.

Fair, but I just think it was too little to go by. They really showed the wrong demos in my opinion. I didn't really see any particulalry unique or interesting gameplay features, nor interesting level design. I still like the aesthetic, but from what was shown, it seems to conservative. I mean the psone platformers that it is apparently paying homage to had more meat compared to what was shown. Still, I am interested to see more.

You really want to argue about creativity when Nintendo actually created a competitive 4 player multiplayer platformer with various approaches that's obvious through one trailer? Cat Mario looks way more fun (and kinda broken Cat Toad top tier) than this corridor platformer. Not to mention I'm sure 3D Mario has and been had all that you mentioned. For god sakes I can do divebombs now.

C'mon, if you look through this thread you've all came to any rationale possible to make it better than it seems. What's so creative about it? I'm hearing all of Cerny's sweet talk of all these pieces and Knack doesn't do a damn thing creative wit em. The only real creative thing about Knack was the character design, after that seeing him in action is downhill from there.

2 Goblins with bubble guns!

1-2

1-2

Time to go down the hallway.Even the escort/stealth/ice missions looked just as boring. It doesn't push challenge (family friendly is not a valid excuse, if a game is genuinely good, kids will play that shit no matter how hard it may seem). It's similar to a me too game but severly half assed, yet you guys praise Cerny's name like the second coming of Miyamoto, even compared him to Miyamoto and said they should work together. (lmao)

It's like a lesser version of the Force Unleashed, but colorful.

And as much as I love color..... colorful visuals do not equal a good game.

Also, PR aside, what have you seen in the video that's a good example of the shit they're advertising? Don't be a sucker.

Keep in mind, creativity is the very thing that makes a good platformer. Mario's been interacting with the environment since 96. With the basic 3D Platforming mechanics combined with new attacks, and various abilities gained from powerups.

Do you really think you'd play Knack twice after beating it?

[EDIT: Just to clarify, no vitriol or anything, but I do get a bit passionate when discussing gameplay sometimes.]

I get a slight Kameo vibe from it, which is a big reason I'm sticking it out. Most of the hands-on impressions have been positive as well. Controls are tight, visuals are slick...the open question is whether the gameplay sans platforming will grow stale.

They didn't.

But isn't that when the Sonic franchise was in a reaaaalllly dark place? (also rushed to get it out for the anniversary) Like, it took the shitty games releasing and completely flopping on Metacritic/etc. for them to erase those releases from history.

Knack seems like a case of bad choice of demo selection. I understand they wanted to show off the different Knacks, but the way that they did it is making people think that this is a SUPER linear experience. Cerny said there's an open world feel, so hopefully they will show this in the next batch of info that comes out for Knack.

See I think this is exactly why I think I'll be picking it up. I can't even count the number of times I've beaten the original Jak and Daxter (and I'm about to pick it up again for Vita).

There's something to be said about charming, accessible gameplay. I don't get that sense from the videos as they stand, but when I play that's what I would hope for.

I imagine looking at isolated sections of Jak and Daxter today and to be honest, my reactions would be very lukewarm. Playing it though makes a huge difference.

I just hope there's some humor which was a big part of the legacy Cerny games.

Given the graphical presentation it's easily 1080p/60, isn't it?

It's 30 FPS but not completely locked, dips to what I would say looked like 25 FPS when pulling off any special moves. Game feels really sluggish at points, definitely the worst performing PS4 title I saw out of Sony's lineup.

Cerny mentions something about 5,000 objects with physics simulation making up Knack and I can't help but ask.

Who cares?

They aren't doing anything with that technology that makes the game look for play any better. 5,000 traditionally animated non-physics objects would have worked just as well and probably wouldn't be pulling the damn framerate down so much. Knack isn't even made up of the objects he breaks. Sure he is made of ice in the ice level but it isn't the exact ice particles he just created by breaking objects. Similarly objects in the environment react with physics but then disappear 3 seconds later. Why bother?

My biggest hope for the game did come in this video when they talked about gameplay and, for example, there being about 100 types of enemies and some having smaller windows to be attacked especially on higher difficulties.

That gives me big P.N.03 or Maximo vibes so I have more hope now. Those games probably aren't the most exciting looking in videos but the gameplay is pretty high in tension with careful enemy/timing management.

All the physics we've seen seen in this demo don't seem important to the gameplay which is why it seems like such a tech demo at times but I have a bit more hope for the gameplay now even if I'm not entirely sold.

Those city levels are giving me a Sonic Adventure 1 adventure mode vibe. Which is not a compliment.

It's too bad, because the announcement trailer had a cool style, and I like the principle behind the main character's mechanics.

They say in the video they are both from the same level just from different parts (beginning and end respectively). The other levels haven't been city based so it may be the only one.

I'm cautiously somewhat interested in this one... maybe only because I deeply miss platformers. Quite frankly, it doesn't look really good. I would expect more from Cerny, the producer and chief PS4 designer... except if it runs at a flawless 60fps @ 1080p in reality but I don't think it does.

I might buy it just so they know some people still enjoy traditionnal platformers.
