Rurouni Kenshin: Episodes 1-43
For some reason, I really had the urge to go back to this show. It's really interesting to see what has held up to the test of time and what hasn't. The thing that has surprised me most is how kind of bad the show looked up to the Saito fight. Tons of repeated animation and still frames combined with some really jerky animation really hurts a ton of key fights before that. Even the first Aoshi fight (one that I remember quite fondly) just looks kind of boring and terrible. Once the show hits the Kyoto arc, everything changes. There are still some moments of bad animation, but the fights become much smoother and more dynamic. the still frames are used much less and the show finally starts looking like I remember.
Story wise, the show does still hold up. The cast is great and the drama is surprisingly deep for a shonen show. It definitely isn't quite as strong until it hits Kyoto, but what's there is still good. I will probably right a much longer piece on this once I finish Kyoto as I have a ton more to say.
Was stuck on third episode for quite a few weeks now. Glad to hear it gets better both story and animation wise.
One Piece 34-44
It was alright I guess. Certainly the best arc so far though it didn't manage to convert me into a believer. I'm usually sucker for more or less historical fantasy but the pirate setting as depicted here really doesn't mesh with me. Still not feeling the cast and the comedic bits are a miss 90% of the time, they even managed to ruin Sanji with them. Nami's backstory was touching. I don't quite get Bellemere's decision though, surely the rest of the villagers would borrow/give her the necessary money to save herself. It's not like Arlong would care. And god dammit Nami was more useless than Sakura during the final showdown.
At least I won't have 600 episodes to catch up to, phew.
Sabagebu 07, Nozaki-kun 07
Both shows are slowly losing me. Criminal lack of Seo in the Nozaki. Need to catch up to Barakamon to see if it's just me being dead inside.
