If your wife really loved you, she'd let you have that Macbook.

hehehehe, i can convert her, it's an easy task, it'll take getting used to, but she'll accept it. im keeping the Vaio though.

btw, is the MB good enough for playing HD from my Sony cam and minor editing? nothing major really. but i'd like to have the option instead of buying the bigger MBP(15"), the Mac will be my travel companion btw.

He was asking what interface your HD sony camera was. If it is firewire (Sony calls it iLink), the new aluminum macbook can't use it, since Apple removed the firewire port.

As for your iLife question, it is a bundle of applications used for everything from creating and editing home movies to publishing websites.

The apps basically make it easy to produce professional looking dvds w/ menus and audio, edit home movies (and later burn them to dvd), etc.

i see, gotcha thanks! my Sony 120GB HDD HD cam is USB and uses it's own SONY software to import the video(AVCHD), i hope it's available for Mac. My cam doesn't have firewire.

my biggest challenge when i get a mac, is getting all the alternative apps on the mac that i used to use on XP...but im sure enought everyone here is going to help me out...right :)

im on crutches for 2 weeks since im recovering from a foot operation, so i'll see if i can manage pop by the Apple store in London.

I don't think you'll need, or want, to use that Sony software anymore. You can import AVCHD directly into iMovie.

How well does Parallels really work?

Is it better than using Boot Camp? (as far as the XP experience goes....... when I'm in XP, I want it to be like it's actually XP, no slowdown or quirks or anything, like I suspect Parallels probably has)

ive been using VMware Fusion, and i havent found any quirks yet. it seems good enough to use for little things that you need to for windows. although i cant think of anything right now...gaming wise i heard bootcamp is best.

Works really well for me so far. It's a little twitchy [graphical glitches, nothing major], but performance is pretty damn rock solid.

I got Parallels for two reasons: browser testing for IE6/IE7 as I'm a web-designer. Oh, and watching SopCast stuff. So my scope doesn't really go beyond that and some other proprietary things. Can't tell you how well it would handle using big programs like AutoCAD or something while running in parallel.

There's a mode called "Coherence" that literally displays Windows and MacOSX simultaneously. Meaning, your windows taskbar can be placed anywhere you want, and your windows windows/apps will be shown inside OSX and function like regular. With Coherence, you can drag and drop files from your OSX folders into Windows.

I just purchased the "old" Macbook Pro that was on sale for $1350 from the Apple Refurbished store, and I was interested in checking out the new design. Never had a Mac before and was previously only checking out the plastic versions of the Macbook. So for all intents and purposes, the Macbook Pro is a new thing for me altogether.

The Apple Store I went to had both the old and new ones side by side, and I was very underwhelmed by the new model. While the new Macbook's unibody finish is a nice touch, I felt the old Macbook looked and felt a lot more refined and higher end than the new one. In particular, the silver keyboard felt like butter to type on. I'm not a really big fan of the black keyboard or the black glossy frame around the screen. Needless to say, I'm pretty pumped about my Macbook Pro coming on Monday and I'm excited to see what all the fuss is about.

@ Shawnwhann, I agree, the last gen MacBook Pro is the better value right now. Viva la matte screen, FW400 port & DVI connector!

Probably buying another one in the next week or two...

Yes, you M3 driving bastard (sold my E46, will have another one day),the MB is fine for that . I have a santa rosa macbook (so about a year and a bit old) and its fine with my canon HF100. Connect it up and imovie 08 will import the footage in fullHD, and you can edit just fine.

You can also export to a DVD which the PS3 will play which is handy.

Do you really need the separate 400 port when the 800 is backward compatible? Plus, is using the DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter that big of a deal? I always use my monitor with one computer, so I just leave the mini-DVI-to-DVI adapter on it all the time.

do you get a displayport to DVI in the box? If not, then its pretty cheap of apple, considering almost noone will have a displayport monitor.

u wish. apple is pretty much known for constantly taking out accessories and not including necessary ones. these are the guys that took out the power adapter for ipods, leaving only a USB cable.

This is apple. They systematically cut included accessories with every revision of their products, as well as cutting practicality and functionality. But hey, they save a few pennies while they're at it. Its infuriating. The least they could have done is include a mini-display port to display port adapter, so when this connection becomes common, you can actually use a normal display port cable, instead of this proprietary crap.

..but I'm still planning to pick up the new macbook next week.

so the mini size isn't standard?

so unless you buy the new cinema display, its impossible to connect the MB/MBP to an external monitor without buying an adapter?

thats really shit. Although thinkign about it, its no different to my macbook with 'mini' DVI. At least the old MBPs had a proper DVI connector

Cool as a cucumber for the first 45 minutes of use (with the 9600 GT turned on), then warms up to about room temperature.

WAY WAY WAY cooler than any other Mac I've used. Including my G4 iBook.

The top-left of the top case does get very warm if you're playing 3D games on battery, though.

It's a standard insofar as the first time it's been implemented in a consumer product can be a "standard." It's fairly likely that Lenovo will also add mini-DisplayPort to their high-end ultra-thins, flush with their own adapters.

You're right, the only thing you can connect to OOTB is the new 24" cinema display. It's silly, but I've owned 5 other Macs and I've had to buy VGA or S-Video or DVI adapters for all of them.

Like Liu Kang said, you just buy the adapter, connect it to the cable, hang it from the TV/monitor, and forget about it.

I plan on using this machine for a solid three or four years, so I'm not all that concerned about the one-time cost of an adapter.

had a look in my nearest department store that sells macs (John Lewis) and they didn't have the new models in yet. But I had a quick look at the old MB Vs MBP. The screen size on the MBP is quite a bit bigger than the MB, didn't think it would be so noticable.

1lb heavier and a bit larger...hmm

After lifting both of the new notebooks, I think the MBP's weight feels more natural. It's actually heavier, but it feels less so because of the increased surface area.

The new MacBook feels very dense to me.

Why does medschool have to take so fucking longggg!! >_<

EDIT: Yeah I've noticed these new MBPs barely get hot at ALL. Even when I overclock the 9600M GT in Windows practically 150% higher than the stock speeds, it doesn't get 1/4th as hot as my X1600 MBP.

You know what would be awesome: if 3-finger-swipe switched tabs in Safari. Instead, it just does history back-forth. Who uses history more than switches tabs? Boo!

Edit: Nevermind! I just installed MultiClutch, and now when I swipe left/right in Safari, it'll switch mah tabz. So awesome.

Except it installs an InputManager. Wah :(

I just added two more that totally make this upgrade worth it to me:

Swipe up --> Command-T (New tab)
Swipe down --> Command-W (Close tab)

I can now browse GAF without needing any keyboard shortcuts except command-3 to open the bookmark. I can open a bunch of threads in new tabs and then navigate and close them all on the track pad.

So awesome.

It's too bad you're all buying Macbook Pro's, I'd be very interested in some benchmarks with Team Fortress 2 on the normal Macbook with the 9400m. I've read on macrumor forum that a guy was getting 40-60 fps with TF2 on a 2.0 macbook (high settings). If this is in any way accurate, I don't see much reason to go with a pro. Though likely it is not. Is there no one here with a normal MB that can confirm or deny this?

Droopped by the Apple Store yesterday and played with the new laptops. They are very nice, and the MacBook is pretty much exactly what I've wanted all along. I think I'm going to hold off on the upgrade for now, but I'll have one sometime early next year. Great laptop. It feels much thinner, even though it's not all that much.

i got a MB, how do i benchmark? i just installed HL2 and was getting 100fps+. while actually playing and moving it was more around 50-60 though. not bad at all.

i love multiclutch, 3 finger left/right to go back and forward, and up/down to switch tabs. genius.

after playing with fusion and parallels, i think i like parallels more. fusion wouldnt let me open a windows media player file from another computer. something about being a guest and not sharing. but is there anyway to hide the windows taskbar in parallels with coherence mode? and the fucking windows reactivation thing is so annoying.

In preparation of a glut of very sudden PC Game purchases on my part (I haven't had a serious chance to play them in years), I just installed Vista over Boot Camp.

I've installed Vista on several Macs, and it's obvious that Apple has failed to load the new MacBook Pro OS X install DVD with fully updated drivers for Windows. The track pad doesn't work as advertised, with absolutely no ability to right-click (no control click, no two-finger click, etc.).

The NVidia drivers appear to be fine, but overall usability is poor. I'm updating Vista now, maybe that'll smooth things over.

My coworker brought his new MBP into work last week, and it was snazzy looking. He let me touch it and pick it up, touch the trackpad and everything. I'm just commenting the color scheme Apple chose this time around. I think it's very familiar looking, which I've never felt about designs before. Maybe the rest of the tech industry is making it harder on Apple, as they've followed suit in focusing on style. I don't know.

It's probably just a reaction to them getting sick of the all white thing they had going for a while. It looked good at the time, but it's so dated and cheap looking now, and they've ended up going too deep into using black.

I like the new iMacs that just have a black frame around the screen, but it looks like in the new MacBooks that there's just too much black. Black works best as an accent to silver, not as a main color to go with it. The first gen iPhone had this too, where the back and the trim was all silver but the front frame was black, but now everything is black except the trim. It just looks weird.

I really like the way the MacBooks look, but like a lot have said so far in here, I'd prefer it if they toned down the black and just let the aluminum shine.

See, I knew I couldn't be alone. I agree with the changes you suggest.

The UK price appears to have dropped slightly on them...

Strange...

Edit: Ha my mistake, it was the education site.

$50/hour, but no kissing on the lips and colors must be pre-separated

...and I'm so used to the color scheme.

I own a very similar model, the Gateway ML6720. The cheap little bastard has been good to me.
