I wonder how well that touch D-Pad would have worked. It looks almost like it could act as an analog pad as well. Such a sleek looking design.

So that WAS real? I remember hearing rumours that NTL (Was the largest Cable network in the UK, now Virgin Media) was partnering with Pace to create a DC powered uber TV box, but it never happened.

I still think that would have worked, broadband powered gaming, yes joke about the Phantom all you like but a console that works via the internet as its main (only) source of material would be awesome.

I never had a problem with the thumbsticks. Aside from the degradation signified by the white powder, in fact, the N64 analog stick is maybe my favorite ever... I'm sure part of that is nostalgia, but the N64 analog stick has a unique feel not duplicated by any other analog stick, and I really like that feel. It's too bad they wear out faster than other analog sticks on other systems, a stick that feels like the N64 stick but doesn't wear out as fast would be just about perfect...

I also really like the octagonal well, I think it makes precise controls much easier than circular (as Sony, Sega, and MS's sticks all use, I believe) or square (like some PC gamepads, many of Saitek's for instance) welled analog sticks.

Not just last gen.

SNES: Dark purple Power and Reset buttons on the system. Dark purple A and B buttons. Light purple X and Y buttons.

Game Boy Color: Launched in six colors, two of them purple. One (Grape) is standard solid purple. The other, "Atomic Purple", is completely transparent, unlike the semi-transparent Smoky Purple color of the launch GBA color you mention.

Nintendo 64: Propably in 1998 or so, the Atomic Purple N64 line was launched. It came with a standard N64 and two controllers, one standard grey and the other one transparent purple. Atomic Purple controllers were only available through this package, in the US at least, I'm pretty sure. It was one of the first alternate colors available for official N64 controllers. Later, in 1999 or early 2000, Nintendo released a line of semi-transparent colored N64 controllers and systems, the Funtastic line. They were the same price as an Atomic Purple system, but came with only one controller instead of two... is having a semi-transparent orange or green or whatever system worth the extra $25 it'd cost to buy that second controller? I say no. :)

And then the smoky purple GBA and the purple Gamecube were both colors out at the launches of their systems. But it wasn't the first time Nintendo had used the color...

I have a transparent purple GBC and both a smoky purple and solid purple GBA (the smoky purple one was my first one, but its dpad died so I got a new one, which ended up being the solid purple... I like the transparent ones more, they're more interesting.) and two Atomic Purple N64 controllers, in addition to the SNES, so yeah, I have a bunch of Nintendo's purple stuff... not the GC though, both of my GCs are black.

The awesome would have melted the earths crust and we'd all have perished slowly and painfully in the burning hot lava. It would have been so worth it to see Nintendo games running on Sony hardware though.

I cannot believe this wasn't posted, the Nintendo AVS (Advanced Video System) shown at CES 1984, a prototype American version of the Famicom with more features, stuff that was cut from the NES by 1985.

Check out the other high-tech stuff that was being designed for the Nintendo AVS:
http://www.nesworld.com/nes.php

Also did anyone like the Super Famicom prototype and Famicom redesign prototype that I posted ?

Cool, but I instantly get an Adam vibe, looking at those pics. Still remember walking the aisles at the local Zayre department store and seeing stacks of them, complete with monitor and all peripherals, selling for $50 a pop.

Does anyone have pictures from UK Magazine 'TOTAL!' (RIP) where they had their own concept art for Project Reality/Ultra64/N64? It was flat, used disks and had a headset. It was quite funny actually.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.
These two probably stand out more for me than any other concept systems. I still have the issues of EGM they came from (along with most of the other above prototypes). As a kid I would just stare at that Tetsujin mobo/chipset and dream...

Thanks for the fuzzy memories. Cheers.

lol

It was never supposed to be played. Prototypes are a time to go crazy for the hell of it, and if it can be developed into a good idea it is. That clearly couldn't, but someone was looking for a raise or promotion thinking outside the box.

The Nintendo Revolution mockups

Notice different placement of buttons, Revolution logo and different colors. Originally the glowing blue light was only for press mockups but once people liked it they made it stay.

Nintendo Revolution controller mockups

Notice shorter formfactor, lack of speaker, different button labels, color versions and different nunchuck connector.

Motion controls with one big button? Seems to fit the theme they were going for in simplifying the control scheme.

Why did the PS3 have 2 HDMI ports and three Ethernet ports?

What would three ethernet ports do? And why 2 HDMI ports?

Also, the PSP could not have been fun to play, and would have had even less buttons than the current PSP.

no.
