Kickstarter Thread - 2015 - Making promising projects a reality...again

K8UEb9t.png

Kudos to MrCummingham for the updated banner. Thanks!
---
In the fashion of the 2012, 2013, and 2014 threads, the focus of this thread is to share and discuss promising projects seeking funding through Kickstarter (and Indiegogo and other crowdfunding sites).

2014 was another great year for crowdfunding projects, although that's not to say there was no controversy. From the hilariously entertaining shitstorm that was Areal to the cancelled Yogventures, Kickstarter came under a ton of scrutiny and criticism.
But even amid all that, 2014 was rife with Kickstarter successes. We saw a huge amount of funded projects finally release, many to critical acclaim. Games like Shovel Knight, Divinity: Original Sin, Wasteland 2, The Banner Saga, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Dead State, and many more.

And of course an incredible number of interesting and intriguing projects were funded

Here were some of 2014's successful campaigns:

This OP and thread won't cover every campaign, but mainly the ones that are noted within its pages as well others that I might learn about.

Perhaps of interest to people in this thread, but I've continued to update my Kickstarter progress tracker:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1lFW2sjShHriYRsyuVZx4Se8Qxjw38VJk4g-7cls8cpg/edit#gid=0

Basically it's a document that lists every game that Kickstarted for more than 75k with funding date up to May 2014 (I add new months as time goes on). I check every few weeks to update their status, and colour-code them as released (bright green), low-to-no risk (light green), normal progress or some signs of risk (yellow), significant risk of failure (orange), documented failure (red), or too early to tell (blue). For games in development I link to Steam or Kickstarter so you can check their updates. Released games are green even if they turn out shitty.

Right now I track 182 games.

Feel free to use this link if you are taking part in a discussion about whether or not game kickstarters are OMG SCAMS or THE BEST THING ever or if you just want a list of some of the games that have been KSed or if you're just curious.

I'll have a release date for that spread sheet in just a week, Stump, and the release not sixty days after that. = D

Volgarr The Viking
Divinity: Original Sin
Valdys Story
Race The Sun
Lords of Xulima
Shovel Knight

Some truly great Kickstarter funded games. Not including the merely 'good' ones.

Those are the ones that made (or will make) my personal top 10 games of the year they were released.

- SpaceChem
wow didn't know SpaceChem had a kickstarter. Incredible game as well.

Thanks for keeping this up to date. Sent you an update about La-Mulana 2.

Checking through it also reminded me about the Project Phoenix, did anyone here back it high enough to get access to the alpha or whatever it's in now? I haven't keeping track with their updates at all.

Shovel Knight

Some truly great Kickstarter funded games. Not including the merely 'good' ones.

Those are the ones that made (or will make) my personal top 10 games of the year they were released.

wow didn't know SpaceChem had a kickstarter. Incredible game as well.
Actually now I read the KS page, the campaign was only to fund a Limited Edition release (a physics box set version, a poster, etc.), not the game itself

So what projects did people back last year and what state are they in?

In 2014, I backed:
- Rain World (regular progress, backer alpha released)
- Olympia Rising (aiming for a Jan/Feb release)
- Heart & Slash (on Steam Early Access)
- Four Sided Fantasy (alpha build is out for backers)
- SuperHOT (regular progress)
- Witchmarsh (regular progress, preorders available soon)
- NOCT (coming to Steam Early Access soon)
- That Which Sleeps (regular progress)

Heart Forth, Alicia - Seems to be coming around nicely. Haven't made it to the promised Alpha demo yet.
La-Mulana 2 - The game is still in an early state. Progress is a bit slow, but I believe in the project.

Canceled:
Flying Hamster II (Canceled)

That's it for me in 2014. Not too many kickstarters that I found really interesting, but it might also be because there's been a lot more kickstarters than before. Keeping track of them all and the bigger competition makes it harder to choose which ones to back. Last year has also been the year of bundles for me. Unless the game looks really interesting I'm less likely to invest in it with so many good games getting bundled.

On the other hand, if something like Iga's new Castlevania clone appears I'll throw all my money on it.

I only backed La-Mulana 2 in 2014. It seems to be done with pre-production and ramp up to actual game production in 2015.

edit:nvm

I backed more video games in 2014 than I was expecting to (and less board games than I was expecting to).

Hopefully I will reverse that in 2015, as great as the games I backed looked, I'm still apprehensive on backing video game projects.

What game are you working on?

Nothing to currently show of the game running right now as I'm building the base (all placeholders currently) for something based off motorcycle gangs, norse storytelling, strippers, murder, and death games. Think Arcade Action + Carmen Sandiego + Westerado + TBD.

I'm programming it in GameMaker and designing all the art. Here is some of the early character designs and overall look of the game (the second screenshot's style won't be used but the character design is being used, ie prototyping layouts):

I'm hoping to fix a few bugs in my last game I finished Yggdrasil for people to be able to play but it has a similar art style to the one I'm currently working on. Here's a buggy Gif of its intro screen:

I only backed Kingdom Come: Deliverance and the Mega Man boardgame. Both were successful, and somewhat on track but neither has been released.

I really want to follow things better this year.

Norse mythos? Influenced by Westerado (one of my favorite indies of 2013)? Cool art style? Bear priest? Yeah, count me in. Do you have a Twitter page to follow?

I'm super behind on stuff but you can check my twitter here.

If you like my designs you can grab shirts here too that I enjoy making. It will kinda of give you an idea of some of how the rest of the game will look. In fact one of the shirts uses a pivotal character in the story ;)

You won't see much on twitter probably for a while, but once I can post things I will. I literally just recently got the initial base road travel mechanics set, but it needs a ton of work still.

I'm still trying to work out the Westerado stuff (primarily the "Kill when you want" mechanic).

In fact the core mechanics still need a a mountain of work. It's literally in the baby stages of being built. I know what I want to do, how I'm going to do it, but it's going to take quite a bit of time. I'm also not the best programmer, but with roughly a years time I know I am able to make what I want. I have alot of experience working in GameMaker, but my background is in contemporary art and technology making large and small art Installations and whatnot.

Have you checked out the TIGSouce forums?
http://forums.tigsource.com
It's a developer-focused community where devs make threads where they log their progress, provide advice, etc. Minecraft, Papers Please, Freedom Planet, and more all had devlogs there. It's an awesome community and you could probably find a lot of help and advice there. For like 25 pages, the Rain World thread became an in-depth Unity tutorial as the dev of that game was learning and asking for advice on how to use Unity. I know the devs of Cally's Cave 2 found their artist on TIGSource.

Yeah, I've used their forums in the past, but for projects that never really had a purpose whereas this current project is shooting for an official digital release/etc. so it makes more sense now to use.

I'll make sure I use it now since I was primarily going to be using the GameMaker forums which can sometimes not wield solid help. I'll probably post a thread sometime there soon-ish.

Again, huge thanks for the input , TIGSource forums escaped my mind even though I love using them ^_^

EDIT: Took your advice
