I watched Green Inferno last night!
It has all the racism of the old cannibal films, but none of the intelligence or subtlety of Cannibal Holocaust. And lets face it, Cannibal Holocaust is not a highly intelligent or subtle film.
If you are going to make a movie in 2015 that harkens back to the old films that were all about "savage natives are going to kill you, eat you, and rape your women", you have to be damn careful in your writing. And Eli Roth is not up to that task.
Probably the most racist movie I have seen in a while. Good looking special effects though.

I watched a bunch of movies, most of them recent
- It Follows: pretty decent, but the stellar soundtrack by Disasterpeace makes it memorable.
- The Babadook: thought this was more of a psychological film than real horror. I hated the kid, but that was the point. Nothing really grabbed me here though, very forgettable
- We Are Still Here: this was recommended in other threads, was really disappointed by it. Complete lack of tension, weakest of the bunch I watched. I just finished Until Dawn and it was kinda cool to see Fessenden again so soon.
- As Above, So Below: by far my favorite of my recent watches. Very claustrophobic and unsettling. Also starts off as an adventure movie, which makes the story move at a fast clip. Very impressed by this one.
- Creep: predictable low budget found footage, but pretty good nevertheless. Peachfuzz!
- Housebound: first off: actress playing Kylie is hot as hell. Second: the movie is pretty damn good! Starts off in a

- Ginger Snaps: I think this is a pretty popular and loved movie, but I couldn't get into it. It was actually better as a pure teen drama in the beginning
I was playing Until Dawn as well, which was surprisingly great and an allround fantastic horror experience

Yep, definitely made by huge horror fans. They could've easily gone
overboard with the cheese, but they didn't descend into really cringeworthy stuff. Plus, once the Wendigos come into play, it's actually pretty scary as well. If you're introducing monsters that late, they'd better deliver... and they do. I loved their design and stop motion-like animation
btw the movie room has posters for House of the Devil and Innkeepers, Ti West films both writers were involved with. Once I noticed those posters and looked up the connections, I was convinced even more that I was in good hands.

I didn't find that to be the case with these movies, but that was absolutely my first thought upon finishing Megan is Missing. Rating it in Netflix felt like a trap; in fact I was relieved I watched it on such a legitimate streaming service. Seems ridiculous, but that's how raw I found the movie.
Agreed. HC1 is only worthwhile as a bonus feature which relates to HC2. I actually just finished HC3, and was profoundly disappointed. Fun B-movie, but it's even goofier and less effective than the first movie.
I posted about A Serbian Film in the Movies that Make You Feel Dirty thread. In short, it felt too silly to be upsetting; and reading about its gestation, it sounds like that's what the creators were going for. Shock value for its own sake - which, in all fairness, it does rather well. But you're not going to give me chills with all the vile "pornographic" content if you also show me a guy

Anyone ever think about how little truly "good" horror there is? Like, films that are universally acclaimed as good. The kind were critics, whether they personally liked it or not, have to agree that there is some real quality and effort put behind its creation. Don't get me wrong, there are definitely movies like that in the genre, but if feels like so long since we've had a movie that was genre defining and would be remembered a decade later.
I'd personally say Let the Right One In fits that criterion.

So just watched Cooties earlier this week... It was a fun movie. Nothing groundbreaking or anything, just fun. Also watched Dead Rising: Watchtower.... I haven't played any of the games but as I like zombies I watched it. It's bad (of course it is it's a videogame movie-ish). People have said that Rob Riggle playing as Frank West was a bad casting but it was dumbfunny. I wouldn't know since I've never played the games.
Also, I can't stop watching Dawn of the Dead both versions.
I need a good ghost movie that I haven't seen in a while (or just in general). I'm trying to find a site that has A Wicked Ghost but no luck. Youtube has it but it's in 2 parts. Need to rewatch The Eye (original) too. Not a big fan of The Ringu movies or the Ju-On series tbh.
Also, I can't stop watching Dawn of the Dead both versions.

Yeah, Serbian Film didn't disturb me either. It just tries too much to shock the viewer, and by doing so fails to reach the aim. I find the more subtle psychological approach to be more effective, some examples that come to mind would be Audition, Dumplings, Videodrome, In a Class Cage and some Lynch films.
And 28 Days Later.

Dawn of the Dead Remake is one of those films that I think is very firmly stuck in the 00s, and it's really hurt its ability to age particularly well like a lot of films that came out between 2003-2007. It has its moments still, but adult me doesn't appreciate it half as much as High School Zombine.

Yea I agree. I mostly enjoy watching the extras that covers the outbreak. I love it when zombie films dives deep into their backstory and the remake does that with their extras. Not many zombie films that I have seen shows that and shows the outbreak mainly from the location they are in.
It would be nice if 28 Days Later also provided extras depicting what happened after the incident and up to Jims awakening. Like I said, I just love it when films show the downfall of humanity. It just intrigues me.

Thanks for the heads up. I would have missed that otherwise, as I don't visit OT that often.
If nothing else, all three movies are successful at telling the same story via entirely different subgenres of horror.
First Sequence is a bit of a B-movie, but it's played seriously - it wants to slot in with movies like Hostel, and doesn't do a bad job of it.
Second Sequence is moody and disturbing. Real dirty horror. Definitely the most serious, impressive, and original of the three.
Final Sequence is just fucking goofballs from beginning to end. It's like a Troma film.
In the world of the HC films, the first is a movie, the second takes place in our reality, and the third is South Park.
This is a cool way to look at it. I still need to see the third.
Last Shift - Dope ass ghost story. Decent acting, decent production, chilling visuals and some genuinely scary moments (haven't experienced that in a minute).
Recommended highly.
Only obvious negative is that after the first spook moment, the protagonist kinda shrugs it off and continues her shift. This happens multiple times. Too many times to be believable (yeah yeah she's a cop; still).

That sounds awesome. Will check it out.
I saw The Gallows. Mediocre horror, but a fun movie that I enjoyed regardless.
Also saw Unfriended. Loved it. Others probably won't because found footage, silly plot, and so-so cast; but the gimmick felt like a breath of fresh air, and the movie felt like more than the sum of its parts.

Just watched a really solid horror-comedy

(not to be confused with Final Girl which came out recently)
It's a throwback to 80's slasher flicks. I don't really want to spoil it, but even though it's pg-13 it had some great stuff in it. Very enjoyable. Will definitely grab on blu ray when it releases next month.

Most horror collections with tons of movies for dirt cheap are basically public domain films, and most are really shitty transfers, like direct of a VHS at times. Some classics in some of these sets but the quality is typically crap.

Okay this is really dumb but I'll go for it anyway.
I'm not really into horror movies not because I don't like them, but because I end up getting really paranoid and not being able to sleep, that a long with experiencing sleep paralysis has made me want to watch them even less. But I do enjoy them (Dark Skies, Alien, Lords of Salem are all movies I liked, Lords of Salem to a much lesser extent because it got really dumb towards the end, but the setting and premise were interesting enough)
I want to watch "The Babadook" because the premise seems interesting and its apparently insanely good, but also terrifying. I just need a second opinion before I decide to watch it so I don't end up being paranoid for weeks on end, is it really that scary? or should I be fine.

I love Babadook, others loathe it.
That said, it's predominantly a psychological sort of horror, but the scares that are there might be ones to watch out for if you're prone to paranoia and sleep paralysis. Like... The two main scares I'm thinking of sort of play directly into those.

Babadook is REALLY overrated IMO. It was okay. It wasn't a bad movie but not the amazing movie it is hyped up to be either.
Jason X balances the tongue in cheek goofiness with balls-out slasher badassness so much better. Love that movie. Leprechaun in Space is some goofy fun though.
I suppose it depends on what you find scary. I didn't find it scary myself, but I found it an absolutely harrowing experience and I was pretty drained emotionally by the end. Sadly the third act undoes a lot of that to an extent, but I still really like the movie.
Me too. When the house is melting at the end. Plus the cast was all hot as hell except Paris. But you get to see her die at least.

Now I'm conflicted, but I think I'm going to go for it anyway next weekend and hopefully I won't be searching the house for the Babadook every night afterwards. I'll take your word for it that it isn't that bad.
