Ubisoft’s ‘Assassin’s Creed II’ (-36%) sneaks back up the chart to No2 and Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (-39%) also shows great pace moving up to No3. Nintendo then follow close behind with ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (-42%) and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (-44%). EA’s ‘FIFA 10’ (-61%) slips down the table to No6 followed by Ubisoft’s ‘Just Dance’ (+10%) claiming it’s highest position at No7. It’s a Mario double with ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (-45%) at No8 and ‘Mario Kart Wii’ (-30%) at No9. Movie blockbuster tie-in ‘James Cameron’s Avatar: The Game’ (-31%) rounds off the Top 10 at No10.

Seriously, it's incredible how Wii Sports Resort continues to dominate the charts in spite of the fact that it comes free with every Wii as standard. Simply incredible!

Well in the UK at least the HD consoles have managed to get a much bigger slice of the pie. 17 for 360 and 9 for PS3, that is quite a bit leap compared to previous months (only 8 for Wii).

Isn't that precisely *why* it's number one? It's counted in the official bundles because it's also sold separately, unlike Wii Sports original.

So it mostly means they sold a lot of Wiis last week.

I thought that hardware bundles counted towards the charts, hence the constant charting of LEGO Batman for the 360.

Afaik only the bundles by shops also count towards the software charts, while official bundles (by Nintendo/MS/Sony) only count as one hardware unit sold.

Forza 3 is tracking high, there is an Xbox 360 bundle too.

I've been following these charts for quite a long time & I can't ever remember the number of 360 titles being that high. Seems like the console sales have really been high for the 360 at xmas which is pushing software.

We have no idea how 360 software sales are doing compared to previous weeks and months. This arbitrary 17 vs 9 vs 8 nonsense is... nonsense.

Even the weighted chart has huge, huge room for error when compared with the unknown reality, but counting number of games charted is not what we should be doing... or at least we should acknowledge how little it means.

All we can say is that relatively, PS3 probably did much worse than Wii and 360 down to it having lower amount of titles lingering about than the 360 and the games charting no being anywhere near as high as Wii's on average.

From what I recall about discussions regarding this ages ago, if it's bundled in the box it isn't counted as a separate sale, yet if retailers stick extra games outside the hardware box, they are counted.

Someone correct me if that situation has changed.

People need to remember that just because Wii Sports Resort is in the limited edition Wii bundle, there is still a still solus edition of the game on the market.

Since when is Wii Sports Resort a pack-in?

Since Nintendo changed the SKUs in the UK, rather than lower the price of the machine.

I don't think it comes as standard in the rest of Europe, however.

huh, interesting...

I wonder if that's going to trickle over to other regions.

Probably not, as iirc the exchange rate between the Euro and the Yen has held up over the course of the recession, unlike the GBP (which has gone to hell and back).

That would make sense.

But in France I saw some people buying the normal, white Wii, and it didn't have WSR bundled with it.

Correct me if I'm wrong Euro Gaf, but isn't the Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort combo limited to the Limited Black Wii?

It is, and I'm not sure how long Nintendo will keep the limited edition in stock. It seems like it was just for the holidays which is quite a shame.

Oh, if it's that succesful, I have a hunch they will continue the production :lol

In Europe yes, but it's the standard packin (along with the original Wii Sports) in the UK. Basically, every single region in the world got a price drop on the Wii console, with the sole exception of the UK (Since the value of the pound sterling plummitted against the yen, Nintendo couldn't really afford a price drop here, so they decided to packin WSR instead as a means of adding value to the package)

Oh I forgot about that. As a Dutchman I only saw the Black Wii's arround, so I assumed it was the same in the UK.

Reminds me, I still need a black Wiimote/chuk/M +.

It's still selling out in places else it would be higher!

Most of the risers/re-entries are due to the GAME/Gamestation sales that added extra titles this week. COD4 is under £20 for the first time I think.

Any game that sells outside of a bundle AND inside a bundle counts for the chart.
Any game that does not sell outside of a bundle does not count for the chart.

No sign of the Black Wii going anywhere yet - I expect they will announce if they plan on taking it off the shelves, but it's been a hit so far I believe. I'd expect a reposition around Easter.

TV ads for Bayonetta have already started, they are pinning some cash onto this one so expect it to enter high.

games bundled with hardware that are also available seperately count towards the chart so people buying a wii will count as a sale for wii sports resort but not for wii sports

It probably dropped less than the other titles, hence moving up the charts.

Well it's been hovering in the 20's for couple weeks now so it just seems strange to bounch up so many places suddenly in one week.

:lol Yeah right. They'd have still made a killing on the hardware even with a price drop in the UK, just not as much as elsewhere.

Looking at the type of games sold (older games being bumped), you can tell that a lot of people were buying games for their consoles that they got as Christmas gifts. Also, slow week hardware wise for 360 (other consoles too, most likely).

I think "couldn't afford a price drop" is pretty much true, in that it would be incredibly financially inviable for Nintendo to have dropped the price of the Wii in the UK. The expression doesn't follow the literal meaning of the statement, but so what?

Edit: Just to put this into perspective for those who don't know the exchange rates, when I went to Japan in 2006 one could get roughly 214 yen for £1. Now the exchange rate is struggling to go above 150 yen for £1. That means that Nintendo is making around 11,000 yen less on every Wii it is selling today than it was two years ago. (Of course, the console may be ever so slightly cheaper to produce, but cutting the Wii's price would have eaten quite a bit into Nintendo's profits.)

Nintendo won't take the hit.

And, you know, it hasn't worked out all that well for the other two.

Loss-leader is something to garnish the halls of gaming past.

Well it's been hovering in the 20's for couple weeks now so it just seems strange to bounch up so many places suddenly in one week.

It can be found for under £30 now, which must be helping. And I saw a TV advert for it a few days ago which made it look very appealling.

When they sold the Gamecube for 80€ back in the days, they said they do not make any loss. How much more could the Wii cost to produce?

Dunno if this has been posted elsewhere:

http://www.edge-online.com/news/ds-and-wii-break-european-sales-records

Sales for Wii, DS and a few software titles. Apparently it's internal sales tracking by Nintendo, so no independent trackers a la GfK, Charttrack etc., but it's sold through apparently.

All sales for Europe only:
- DS 40m (first to hit the 40m mark)
- Wii 20m (fastest to hit the 20m mark)
- Wii Sports Resort 5m
- Wii Fit + Wii Fit Plus 9.6m
- NSMB Wii 2.5m

Of course, the Wii most likely does cost tuppence to produce. But if we stick to the literal meaning of "affordable", Nintendo could most likely "afford" to drop the Wii's price by £100. It doesn't mean it's good business sense.

Call of Duty 4 back on the charts :D

£20 new at GameStation - I saw a 16-18 year old kid get refused it as he had no ID, and not enough sense to not ask his friend to get it in front of the shop assistant. :lol

Nintendo won't take the hit.

And, you know, it hasn't worked out all that well for the other two.

Loss-leader is something to garnish the halls of gaming past.

Exactly. Also why make a loss on something that is selling out?

Nintendo really hurt themselves in Europe on the Cube when it was under £100 - public perception was that it was old hat and kiddy just as the mature games started to launch (Resi 4 etc.). As with most electricals prices just keep falling so the consumer is encouraged to wait.

With the DS succeeding by stating at the same price point Nintendo copied the strategy with the Wii. Keeping it at the reasonable £180 for as long as humanly possible is perfect. You get one full controller set and two of the stand out games on the system and usually anotehr older game if you know where to shop & Nintendo keep the -market leader, price never gonna change- attitude they need.
