Nintendo: Next DS to have "high res" screen, but not coming ANY TIME soon. #1

Iwata just confirmed the next generation DS will output high resolution graphics. It will also use a motion sensor.

Excellent find.

I'd like to make a side note that one of the main features of Tegra is outputting high resolution video from handheld devices, so it seems quite likely that the DS Tegra rumors are true.

Oh shit :D :D :D

I predicted Wii HD by fall this year, but the numbers we got today say otherwise. Who knows, but confirming DS HD might be a sign.

This is actually real?!

How crazy that we hear of the DS's successor being HD before the Wii's, you would've though an HD Nintendo handheld would've been like, oh I don't know, two gens later at least. :O

Beaten.

Edit 2: I more meant that it's releasing far closer to the Wii's successor than I would've ever imagined. You get the idea. Crazy.

He doesn't give a date, since he notes that the DS's American sales in 2009 were amazing.

Oh, and the Vitality Sensor and Zelda Wii are both 2010 releases.

Hopefully, buttons are still the primary input, followed by the stylus, followed by motion sensing.

I think "high resolution display" would be a safer translation for 「高精細な映像表示」.

Somewhere out there, there's someone who was out at a late night shop that has just come home with his or her brand new DSi, opened the box, then saw this topic.

Now imagine their expression.

Yeah I doubt the handheld's screen would be 720p. That doesn't make much sense.

It might be able to upscale the DS2's natural resolution and output it at 720p though like the Tegra phones.

They get to own the best gaming system out right now for X amount of time until this comes out.

Sounds like a good value to me.

So the DS successor will have HD graphics and motion control! What kind of graphical leap is thing going to have? Xbox graphics? The next home console better have a huge graphical leap like the N64 to GCN was. None of that GCN-Wii shit.

Well, everything can change in this crazy videogame world. I know some people working for game developpers and they've been asked to ready their games for the next DS if they want to be able to get them out at launch and the window is September 2010. So I guess E3 this year is gonna be interesting.

A handheld that OUTPUTS high definition pictures isn't entirely outrageous.

But I think Iwata just meant the DS2 will have a higher resolution

Yeah, my read on this is that he's just saying that any successor to the DS would definitely have to have high-res graphics and a motion sensor -- not that he's actually saying that an announcement is imminent.

The real scoop from this piece would seem to be Zelda in 2010.

I'm sorry, but I can't find the bit where they actually say "High Definition". Iwata could be talking about a 640x480 DS here. "High resolution" doesn't mean anything to me coming from Nintendo.

Awesomesauce. Also, this announcement seems right for a 2010 release, and I do believe that it's probably High Resolution as opposed to High Definition. High Resolution like the iPhone or the PSP.

SO what do you guys think the motion sensing will be?

I can imagine a gyro like in Wario ware twisted and thats it. Its bad enough to shake the screen your looking at enough around so i think tilting will be the extent of it.
