Point & Click Adventure Thread 2017 - Pixels Walk With Me

FIKLNxJ.png

The last few years have seen the rise of Kickstarter, Indiegogo, as well as digital distribution going from strength to strength, which combined has led to a resurgence in both the number and quality of P&C games. In 2016 there was a substantial amount of work done to the very popular Adventure Game Studio engine which will hopefully see this trend continue.

Gez isn't doing the thread this year as it's so time consuming - I don't blame him, my one is waaaaaaay more bare bones then his, copies his layout, and it's still taken me hours.
If there's games you think look cool that I've missed, please post below and quote me (so I don't miss the message) or PM me, and I'll add it to the upcoming games list. Just give me the name of the game and dev, and I'll find the art/description etc.

I'll omit the steam group details as it seems to be dead (I could see only one post in discussion in the entire 2016 year). Please let me know if it's still alive and kicking and I'm looking in the wrong place or something.

Anything in italic is my own opinion.

Thimbleweed Park
In a town like Thimbleweed Park a dead body is the least of your problems.

Lost along a dusty stretch of highway, this proud town once boasted an opulent hotel, a vibrant business district, and the state’s largest pillow factory, but now stinks of a desperate longing to be what it once was.

A body has been found in the river, bloated and pixelated from the decay of a death come too soon. Agents Ray and Reyes arrive and are immediately suspicious of each other’s intentions, then a couple of pigeons show up and start talking about the signals and it only gets weirder from there.

A cursed clown, a bitter heiress, and the ghost of pillow salesmen join the story and add their own complications.

Play and switch between all five characters as you explore the vast, strange, and manipulative world of Thimbleweed Park while unraveling a dark and humorous neo-noir mystery.

Solve puzzles dreamed up by the brains of Ron Gilbert and Gary Winnick, creators of the original point & click adventure game, Maniac Mansion.

Coming in early 2017 to Windows, Mac, Xbox One, and Linux. iOS, Android, and other platforms will follow soon after.

In what is probably the most anticipated P&C game of the year, Ron Gilbert, David Fox, Gary Winnick & Mark Ferrari reunite to make a classic lucasfilm style P&C game in a Twin Peaks vein. Was supposed to be released last year, but ended up being delayed to early 2017.

You are free, but your world is in tatters. You have no home, no friends, and you are wanted by the police. You can not return to your old life, but perhaps you can start a new one. Join the Unavowed, and learn to fight against the oncoming darkness.

Features:

Choose a male or female protagonist
Choose one of three playable origin stories
Branching storyline
A total of five companion characters to choose from. Each with their own talents and abilities.
Double the resolution of a typical Wadjet Eye Game!
All the usual guff – voice acting, commentary, original music, etc

By Dave Gilbert of Blackwell fame. This will be one he develops totally himself(he also publishes others P&C games via Wadjeteye). Seems to be going for maniac mansion meets bioware (the former in terms of teams with different puzzles, the latter in terms of dialogue - and character gender choice), which should be interesting - there will be romance options if he is able to write them well. So complex he may not get it out in 2017 though - I believe it too was originally scheduled for a 2016 release. He has an interesting talk on the game here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JvU3Lk9WE5I
Tex Murphy : The Poisoned Pawn

Your 3D virtual reality investigation leads you into the heart of a dark secret. An elite team of specialists has created something unspeakable, and each of them is marked for death. A Night at Camp Ravenwood
Camp Ravenwood is a dangerous, dirty camp for delinquents, owned by vampires, and run by Switchblade and his cruel and unusual biker gang. By day, the campers are left to activities such as fishing, football, and swimming, but by night, the camp becomes a place where death is around every corner. A headless maniac with an axe stalks the camp, there are aliens and monsters lurking in the woods, and jocks and bikers riding around waiting for any chance they can get to beat you to a pulp. Enter Smoky Bumblerose, Germy Bumblerose, Benny Berkybile, Clancy Swindler, and Franky Flynnigan, five ex-scouts accused of starting forest fires. They must use all of their wits to survive A Night at Camp Ravenwood, but just when things become too dire, help comes in the form of a mysterious witch named Barbara and a troupe of Girl Scouts led by one pissed-off mother.

A P&C with a pretty recognisable style. The developer has captured the Monkey Island Purcell/Ferarri look & vibe pretty well. This is some years late now, so hopefully 2017 will finally be the year it releases.

SpaceVenture

Who is that professional you might ask? Enter
Ace Hardway, plumber to the stars. An intergalactic Mr. Fix-it armed with his trusty wrench, duct tape, and an impressive ‘norge’, Ace fearlessly plunges into adventure, rooting-out trouble wherever he smells it. Yeah… unclogging wormholes is a dirty job, but someone has to do it.

The Wardrobe is a visually-rich 2D point and click adventure game inspired by the great ‘90s classics such as 'Monkey Island', 'Day of the Tentacle', 'Sam & Max: Hit the Road' and 'Tony Tough'. A substantial update to the original game (this is not a new game and the update is free for people who own the game). Should be dropping in January. The original was one of my favourite P&C games of 2016.

Twelve Minutes
What is Twelve Minutes?
ME: “You know Groundhog day?”
YOU: “Yes.”
ME: “Ok, so it’s the same idea.”
ME: “You come home from work and have dinner with your wife. A cop shows up, beats you up and you pass out.”
ME: “You then wake up at the start of the same evening.”
ME: “You now have to use the knowledge of what you know is going to happen, to change the outcome and break the loop.”
ME: “The loop lasts twelve minutes. The game is in real-time and everything happens in your apartment.”
ME: “Oh, and the game takes about 6 hours to complete…if you are good at puzzle games.”
YOU: “So if you last twelve minutes and stop the cop you win the game?”
ME: “Oh no, the cop arrives about four minutes into the loop.”
ME: “It’s like if Bill Murray was getting killed at breakfast in Groundhog day.”
ME: “If he managed to survive he would then realize the loop actually lasts 24 hours and resets no matter what.”
YOU: “Oh…I see.”
YOU: “So what is the objective? How do I know when I have ‘won’ the game?”
ME: “The game never tells you what to do.”
ME: “There are no clear objectives, the idea is that you do what you believe is the right thing to ‘fix’ the loop.”

And who, if not Detective Gallo, can accept the challenge (and the generous advance of his client)? For the most cynical and sarcastic detective there is, a case that starts as a trivial domestic accident will turn out to be the most intricate investigation his cactus (!) has ever seen...

Detective Gallo is a point&click comic-noir adventure that is entirely hand-illustrated and hand-animated, and whose protagonist is a feathered and grumpy private eye struggling with a very tricky case, bizarre characters, and puzzles that will put his insight and patience to the test.

Mage's Initiation: Reign of the Elements
D'Arc is sixteen years old. He has trained extensively in the elemental arts for the past decade of his young life, under the discerning eyes of the Mage Masters of Iginor. Confined to an existence of academics and magical mastery in their towering hall, the inquisitive initiate often wonders what it would be like to set foot outside in the world he has been secluded from; a world that his Masters deeply shun.
Train your mental and magical mindset in the Reading Hall.

As with all young Mage initiates in training, D'Arc's moment of reckoning arrives and he is summoned to the Hallowed Hall, where the four Mage Masters put him to the test. D'Arc is tasked with completing three quests which will test his magical and mental strength to full capacity. He must return to the Mage's Tower bearing a symbol of proof that he has conquered each task: a lock of hair from priestess, the unspoiled shell of griffon's egg, and the horn of a tricorn.

Join D'Arc on a perilous journey across the medieval land of Iginor. Brave the perilous forest where redcap goblins stalk. Trek across a barren and lawless desert wasteland. Navigate over vast bodies of water where evil masquerades as beauty. And ascend beyond the lofty mountain peaks where the mysterious and hostile race of Flyterians dwell. It is time for D'arc to prove himself. Succeed and he shall be initiated as a fully-fledged Mage, gaining the respect of his Masters and peers.
This appears to be a P&C/RPG hybrid in the Quest for Glory style.
Octopus City Blues
The Ghost in a Bottle Zaibatsu is pleased to announce Octopus City Blues, the authentic Octopus City simulation. Although he ends up getting more than he bargained for.
Starr Mazer
Starr Mazer is a modernized fusion of 2 classic genres: The point-and-click (PNC) adventure and horizontal scrolling shoot 'em up (SHMUP). The game is highly replayable as both the PNC story and SHMUP levels of each playthrough are procedurally generated and significantly different each time. In this regard it is different from traditional PNC Adventures, which were linear in their storytelling and did not yield anything new on subsequent playthroughs.

The narrative progression of each playthrough uses Open-Middled Gameplay (OMG!) in that the story modules kick off predictably and the endings are varied and satisfying, but what happens in between is up to the predetermination of the story creation algorithm as well as the choices the player makes, performance in the SHMUP segments and a host of other environmental / chronological / enigmatic variables.

Though procedural, both the PNC and SHMUP segments of Starr Mazer are highly crafted to provide an engaging, beautiful, exciting and replayable experience. Great care has been put into the modular PNC story engine and SHMUP level assembly.
TSIOQUE

Whispers of a Machine
A few generations from now, the world has regressed to a pre-industrialisation state. At one point between now and then, mankind opted to discontinue all use of advanced robotics and artificially intelligent computers. The reason was a growing, global concern about the potentially catastrophic emergence of a self-aware, super intelligent AI-entity; the singularity.
This caused a worldwide technological collapse.

We play Vera, a federal homicide detective sent to rural outpost Nordsund, to investigate a string of murders.

Vera will soon discover that the victims and their murderers are factions in a war about technology and religion. While some want to awake the AI-god, seen as a last deity in a godless world, others are vehement technophobes.

Whispers of a Machine will feature handpainted 640x360 graphics, an exciting story with existential twists, and multiple endings.
The writer of this is the same guy who wrote The Samaritan Paradox I believe.
Memoranda
Memoranda is a 2D point & click adventure game for PC, Mac and Linux. It has more than 40 scenes, 30 characters and lots of puzzles like all famous classic point and click adventure games. The game script is inspired by Haruki Murakami’s short stories and elements of about 30 stories are used to make the storyline more interesting. If someone is familiar with Murakami’s world he can guess that the game has a magical realism theme and he’d face some strange incidents. For example you’ll meet a dead but moving soldier from WWII or an elephant hiding in a cottage and looking forward to turning into a human being. Most of the characters have something in common and that’s about Losing! Someone lost his mind and someone has just lost a sack of magical tobacco!
Agatha Knife

She needs to find a solution so she can make her animals happy while they surrender with no fear to the adorable little butcher and her sharp knives and saws. And religion is the answer.

Gonna try and finish up batman telltale in the next day or so.
As is it is a nice take on the Batman mythos, so if you don't mind Telltale's simple gameplay, and the jankiness of its engine, def. give it a try.

Any sci-fi/cyberpunk games in the vein of Beneath A Steel Sky or Gemini Rue on the horizon?

Not that I've seen, though I'm still trawling through next years release lists for games to add to the above.

Did you play Technobabylon ?

I'm waiting for a very hefty sale (at least 70% off) sale for batman.

Normally I buy adventure games day one, but Telltale don't deserve anything close to full price for this low-effort release.

FUUUUUCK that's a good subtitle. Good Job, OP.

Generally considered one of the best P&C games of last year.
Ignore the bit about being by the same studio as Gemini Rue and Blackwell though, it's from the same publisher, the developer is different.

I need to get back to that. The DNA splicing puzzle killed all momentum for me in a game I was otherwise enjoying. Shardlight, though, that's a great Wadjet Eye game from last year.

I loved shardlight. Only issues were that it was somewhat easy, and the ending where
I chose to let Denton live and the game pretty much said I made a mistake. Which is really a case of poor writing on the game's side, as Denton doesn't seem like a horrible person. Just a minor beef, but since it's right at the end it slightly makes the whole experience a bit sour, even though the other 99% of the game was very well written.

Yeah, the way they handled the endings was fairly rough, literally just: choose one of these 3 things! Luckily I had a save right before so I just ran through them all

Thanks for the new thread Sir_Crocodile! Thimbleweed Park is probably my most anticipated game for 2017.

My final game finished in 2016 was The Dig. Originally played the demo more than 20 years ago, and I remember how mature it seemed at the time. It holds up as a pretty good adventure game, but those puzzles can get pretty tough so I did use a guide a couple of times to keep the game moving along. Robert Patrick's voice was great as Commander Low - he should definitely do more game VO.

Long live adventure games in 2017!

Fair enough, I'd usually wait for that when it comes to Telltale games, but I was really interested in Batman that I broke my rule XP

Lots to look forward to this year, like Jenny Leclue (finally!), Thimbleweed Park, Night in the Woods, Apartment: A Separated Place (hopefully). Anyone have a link to what's new in Dropsy? That's been on my radar ever since Danielle Riendeau compared it to Undertale and said it was a stronger treatment of similar themes.

Nothing... yet!

There's a free update, previously titled "The Beach Update", now called The Yeti's Curse due out next month... though checking the forums, they say it might be late.

It's a shame, I really like of what little Dropsy I've played, but now I've been waiting over a year for this update, wanting to play a narrative game, you know, when all the narrative is in it. If you are at all interested in the game, definitely buy it now while it's only $2.50

Thanks for taking the reins, Sir_Crocodile, and thanks to Card Boy (Gez) for making the thread the past couple years.

2017 looks to be another very good year. I'm so terribly behind - I probably played just two or three adventures released in 2016. Doesn't look like I'll catch up anytime soon. :/

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I'll throw in a mention for this weird little visual novel I got on sale called Three Fourths Home. Seems like a really interesting atmosphere, and only a couple bucks.

So looking forward to Thimbleweed Park, so far the best Kickstarter I have ever backed -- the dev blog alone would have been worth the money in my book, and the game looks great, too.

Also interested in Unavowed and The Devil's Men but the latter is probably dead? :/

For those that backed Memoranda, check your e-mail, they sent Beta build keys you can redeem on Steam.

Very thankfull for this threads because I felt in love with the genre all over again. It really is the last bastion of good videogame stories.

Some nice stuff there.

I guess The Last Night is coming out never? :p

I really need to finish up VA11-HALLA one day, and also start Technobabylon...

I've been remiss in my point and clicking; hardly played PC games in 2016. I'll try to make 2017 a more aventure-y year.

Kinda got freaked out that the old thread got closed without a link to this one. Was wondering what happened. Any way, happy new year to you guys again!

So I never played the Tex Murphy games, so I'm confused about whether I should skip Mean Streets because of Overseer. I think I've heard that it's pretty excruciating to play for modern days. Should I just go Overseer -> Martian Memorandum etc?

Also seeing how nice Poisoned Pawn is looking, I might wait for that..

just played Contradiction, that was damn good and I didn't think I would like a FMV game that much.(well I can't say that I liked Her Story)

What else can I play that's in the same vein?

Definitely interested in Unavowed because I love the adventures these studios create with that engine(Kathy Rain, Technobabylon, Gemini Rue, etc). Then again Jennifer Hepler is not exactly a well renowned writer. So we'll see.

Guys, do you know of some good adventure games on Android? I have some on iOS, but I'm getting a new Android phone and would like some recommendations. Sadly, not all of the Wadjet Eye games were ported.

Daedalic's State of Mind should be coming out in 2017 aswell (i remember reading that they would announce a release date soon'ish). I'm looking forward to it as it seems to be somewhat different from their usual adventures.

Hopefully, Daedalic will also release The Devil's Men this year. It's been announced long time ago but we haven't heard much since then. Love the artstyle on that game. There is also Daedalic's The Pillars of the Earth, which has a beautiful artstyle aswell.

I'm not the biggest fan of Daedalic's adventure games in general but i have high hopes for these 3 games.

Also, Memoranda looks very interesting. It's inspired by some short stories of Haruki Murakami, which is one of my favourite writers.

Personally, I think the criticism of Hepler is overblown. She wrote some junk(poor DA2 Anders), but she also wrote some of the best parts of Dragon Age: Origins. Most people shit on her because of what she has said outside of what she wrote.

All hit PSN at some point in the future.

Ok, I've just finished the "upcoming games". I won't be adding more unless I find out about a game in the course of my normal browsing or unless someone tells me about one due out this year.

As far as I could see all of Daedalic's games are still "TBA" - let me know if any of them have been confirmed for 2017.

As for Memoranda, when I went to their site, it said the game was out mid 2015 and the last update in the news section was feb 2015, so not sure if that's supposed to be out this year either.

I'm not a big P&C type of guy, but I somehow ended up buying the Blackwell games, Dropsy and Technobabylon since they were so cheap, so... I guess it's time for me to become a P&C guy.

How obtuse are the puzzles in these games, should I keep a guide handy just in case? I tend to use guides with games like JRPGs quite often since I want to see as much content as I can on the first playthrough, but I doubt there's much to actually miss in these games, so I dunno.
