leading up to E3 in the next days, I thought we could share ideas/comments about a possible EW sequel and see how that compares if the rumored sequel actually exists and gets announced

four questions to open discussion:

.- what should stay but requires improvement?
.- what should be removed all together?
.- what could be added?
.- should the structure/gameflow change? like instead of chapters, have it go seemlessly from one thing to the other or furthermore, go open world?

looking forward to some reading some interesting takes on this.

Just make the entire game like that early village chapter from the first and it would be way better.

If they need to shorten the campaign a bit to maintain the level of quality from the first 10 chapters, I'm all for it

I think it definitely gets back on track and ends well, but there's a pretty huge drop in chapter 11

Not sure how everyone feels about it but I love the disjointed narrative with little questions asked. The whole "in the mind" setting gives them free reign. It's basically "what the fuck", the action/shooter game. I loved it but it's a hard sell playing a 20 hour game and not really having a clue of what happened beyond endgame exposition

I'm worried that they'll double down on hiding mechanics, which I don't want personally. Outside of mandatory stuff in chapter 1 I never used them

Skill tree was awesome in the first game, just build upon it

-Solid performance on all platforms. The state TeW launched was horrible. Even now it's not running all that great on standard hardware outside the PC. Definitely don't need a repeat of that.
-Dobt hide essential story behind DLC. The Kidman DLC basically explaining the entire game being behind a paywall was a dumb move.
- Make the story and settings more solid. By that I mean don't think of locations and events and then try to fit a story around them.
-More focus on what it wants to be. Be a horror game or be an action game. TeW did a worse job trying to combine the two since it went back and forth so much to the point of whiplash.

That would cover it for me personally. I want to like TeW, but that first game has a lot of flaws. I hope a sequel can rectify a lot of my complaints.

Make the gore impactful, lose the black bars from the jump, tighten the technical stuff and work on the controls and less combat, more slow moments and less ammo for every encounter.

You're welcome, Tango.

I really enjoyed the original, apart from the daft speeding-car-through-crumbling-city section.

I would personally hope for more of the same but with improved controls and engine optimization.

For it to be completely different and focus completely on action combat because it's the only thing it did well.

Better camera work.
Better performance.
No more stupid black bars, and take it easy on the post processing madness.
MORE amazing transitions.
MORE psychological horror.
More semblance of a continuous story rather than scenarios of what would be scary.

Honestly the main issue for TEW were all technical so hopefully they solved that problem.

But at the same time, I think gone are the days where your character needs to have some kind of control handicap to build up tension. You can still have that with more silky smooth controls

By completing hidden objectives (I think killing all enemies in an area or something) you can spawn secret pigs/whatever that you can kill and get a bunch of brain goop. I think the giant pig in particular is in the village?

what hidden mechanics? can't remember

also, just so to make sure I am not the only one that felt like this:

do you mean two long ass chapters where the scenery was basically the same, going through apocalyptic ripped-apart buildings?

one of those two chapters should have DEFINITELY been cut out from the main game.

agreed on hidding important story details behind DLC being bad.

that being said, they probably though "hey, that's probably an incentive for people to buy the DLC so let's do it"

*Spends an hour fighting zombies and invisible tentacle monsters in the wreckage of a mental hospital he was magically transported into* "Something's not right about this place."

Well gee now that you mention it...

I would also like the scenario to continue to consist of a series of totally arbitrary transitions between unrelated scenes.

Basically I want the sequel to continue to be as bonkers as possible.

Hiding mechanics are actually there throughout the entire game. You can hide in beds/lockers/cabinets/etc. I'm sure you need them for insane difficulties but on normal it isn't necessary. The DLC apparently went all in on stealth/hiding/no combat which is not what I want from TEW2

And yes, chapters 11 and 12 are the city ones. 12 is the one with the turret section too I believe. Which I don't necessarily mind but like...it's not good. I think 13 is the one that's like full Last Of Us which I actually kind of dug

Like what's been said, expand on the combat and focus more on areas like the chapter 3 village and the chapter 9 mansion. Also improve the performance. And bring back the Silent Hill 4 safe room area.

I'm pretty much open-minded, I very much liked the original game.

I think the main things is just don't develop for idtech5 (which I don't know why they would again at this point), maybe be more daring to go down the horror hole, and a few things could be tighter designed. If they have a hub world again like the save area in the original I'd also like if they did some crazier/more interesting things with it this time. I think making the characters a bit more interesting also would help. Also there were some crazy secrets in the game and its DLC, such as the Pig people are mentionign, the weird crow's nest hidden sidequest in Chapter 3, the raving Light Lady in the Kidman DLC, among other things, I'd like more of that.

I'm looking forward to it though.

There was a job listing which leaked, not confirmed 100% but it looks legitmate to do work on PyschoBreak 2 (The Evil Within 2's Japanese name) for a period lasting until this October, and as you mentioned they're working very long hours right now as if they were in crunch time so I do think they may be trying to release TEW2 much sooner after announcement than the original game.

It also has been two and a half years since the original game came out, which is notable. and they said they wanted TEW to be a franchise, not a single game, and Bethesda keeps on having TEW iconagraphy at events, implying it wasn't a one-off for them either.

kiri knows someone personally who worked on TEW, he posted things about the original game before it came out months in advance which all ended up being true. You can look at his post history if you want validation.

What I hope

- Better NG+ would be great. Getting cool new weapons that have very limited ammo sucks. Just give me broken stuff like RE games.
- Improved performance.
- Open the story bit more or go even more vague.
- Keep the jank.
- Improve the trap/agony crossbow mechanic. It was bit undercooked and OP.
- Keep the black bars.
- Less ammo and more usage of the environment to deal with enemies.
- Buff the melee so that it isn't totally useless. Make it a better get off me mechanic.
- Better last boss fight.
- Better puzzles.

What I expect

- Hide and seek
- Low amount of weapons
- Mediocre puzzles

Honestly I expect it to be way closer to the DLC than the main game so that I won't be disappointed when it turns out that way.

1.Don't have another chapter like 12.
2.better final boss
3.Have a couple more areas like chapter 9. I don't mean being chased by Ruvic the entire game, but more levels where you have to solve multiple puzzles or collect things to open up a main door.
4.Don't take inspiration from the DLC.
5.And like everyone mentioned, hopefully it performs better.

Also, one thing that would be an absolute deal-breaker is weapons or armor or any useful shit behind a paywall/microtransactions.

equally bad would be a pointless Multiplayer online side-game which would take dev time and resources away from the main campaign
