MPC-HD v1.7.13 is released and final farewell

SteveO409

Did you know Halo invented the FPS?
v1.7.13, the latest, and probably the last release of our project…

For quite a few months now, or even years, the number of active developers has been decreasing and has inevitably reached zero. This, unfortunately, means that the project is officially dead and this release would be the last one.

…Unless some people step up that is.

So, if someone’s willing to really contribute and has C/C++ experience, let me know on IRC or via e-mail.

Otherwise, all things come to an end and life goes on. It’s been a nice journey and I’m personally pretty overwhelmed having to write this post.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed in any way all these years; Remember, MPC-HC is an 11-year old project.

Hope nothing breaks in the foreseeable future

Damn. I just installed it for the first time the other day because hardware acceleration in VLC 2.2.6 seems to be broken. It's pretty good.

I used to (and still!) love MPC, but I feel like VLC fills in absolutely all my needs, and without any codec packs, too.

MPC is pretty feature filled and great as it is, but it'll be sad to see development stop.

Disappointing to hear, I hate the interface of VLC so I avoid it. MPC for life, until something breaks and wont be fixed...

I dropped MPC for VLC a few years back. It felt like a good decision at the time, and VLC rarely let me down. I guess I never felt a need to change back. This news sucks though.

While I don't mind VLC it seems like MPC has better image quality and can handle larger files better than VLC for me. I guess I'll fully switch over to VLC soon enough.

I've never needed to use a codec pack for MPC.

I like using MPC because it let me use codec packs that weren't whatever VLC supplied. Hopefully people can keep working on it or someone can replace it in the future.

VLC is great for my grandparents, but it can still be really wonky and bloated... Hopefully MPC less working for the foreseeable future.

Still haven't found a player that is better at seeking than MPC. Minimal view + keyboard seeking is awesome.

With madvr and xysubfilter, great for scaling to higher resolutions too and does all I need at the moment.

Damn... I was full on the bandwagon of VLC early on, but 4k support (HVEC) sucks. MPC is probably the best lightweight all you can eat player out there, so stopping support sucks.

I've been using this for years, it's so clean and simple and just works.

I guess I'm glad I switched to Potplayer. MPC is still better in a few ways though so it'll suck to see it go.

What problems do you have with HVEC?

Makes it look like macroblocked soup, but me being on an i5 4570 and digital foundry 4k/60 files might not be the best combination. H.264 seems to works decently though, just some missed frames.

760 Palit, before you are going to ask, so no hardware acceleration.

Ah ok. I was having a problem with a 4K HEVC file a few days ago too and it turned out VLC 2.2.6 wasn't using hardware acceleration despite it being turned on. Worked fine with MPC-HC and VLC 3.0 nightlies.

Is there a way to automatically remove all the GUI when not full screen but have it available when in fullscreen?

I used to have a great minimal skin for MPC back in the day but I don't remember the name or even where to look for it anymore.

Best media player I ever used. This thing is a complete beast when used in combination with madVR and LAV filters. And it also streams 5.1 formats perfectly to my system.

Hope it'll get continued someday.

MPC with MadVR is my jam. Works magic on lower res porn. I haven't bothered updating it in a while though. If it ain't broken...

I still use an old version of MPC with MadVR. It's the only way I can find to automatically sync my media to frame rates on my TV. No worry about pull down. If I'm running content at 23.976 fps, it will play back at exactly that rate without compromise. I've never found another media player that will do this.
