So people are actually having their top 3DS screen scratched because of this?

All it does on mine is leave two small lines down the sides that I can easily wipe off.

man i wonder about the clearance between the top and bottom screen. i feel like people are putting pressure on the top screen for it to be squishing the bottom screen that buildup around the border causes touching or slamming it closed. things are fixed height so i dont get it.

Don't have any scratches or anything like that on my 3DS yet. Have they actually fixed this issue with the new batch of 3DS? If so, are there any comparison pics?

Mine was the same way until one day those lines... wouldn't wipe off!

I'm simply not grasping what's going on here. How it physically possible that some people have this issue while others don't, when all physical dimensions are the same? Did I miss something? I don't even get faint lines.

All people should use screen protectors as all 3DS users should have a copy of either Ouendan (1 or 2) or Elite Beat Agents. Playing that makes screen protectors a necessity.

Every machine is not identical. Fractions of a millimeter, amount of tension on a joint, etc make all the difference due to the unfortunate placement.

I just find it hard to believe. Not denying it in any way as it is clearly a problem for some people, but just hard to believe in general. Seems very weird.

Does it? I must have played EBA, Ouendan and Rhythm Heaven for about 100 hours combined and I have never used any screen protector or gotten any noticeable scratches on my DSi screen. The only marks I ever see are when light catches the screen at just the right angle and you can sort of see very, very faint lines on it. Not had this scratch problem with my 3DS either.

I have a suspicion it has something to do with the loose hinge. Mine was noticably wobbly, and the extra give might close the gap between the two screens. Again, just a theory, but one I'm sort of relying on to avoid scratches on my repaired unit!

its pretty simple to check for this...Lick your finger, run it on the bottom screen raised edge (and controller nub if you curious), close your 3ds and apply a little pressure with your hands, no mark..??.. apply a little more pressure, rinse repeat to a reasonable point (most extreme should be equivalent to sitting down with it in front pocket of well fitting jeans)....youll clearly see at what point, if ever, youll potentially have a problem.

Lick your balls instead idc (i keed i keed)....this is just what i did to pinpoint where id be getting these from and i was surprised that it was barely any pressure at all. If you wanna make sweet tongue love directly to the 3ds the end result should be the same.

Just figured id share so people can figure out exactly whats what.

I was going to hold off on getting a 3DS until the redesign cause of this flaw and just the fact that the redesign will of course be better... but I went and bought one due to the ambassador program (I am going to price match the price drop).

I still haven't opened the box yet though, been trying to research if there are any solutions to prevent these scratches from occuring. Would adding a tiny bit of height to the rubber "stoppers" work perhaps? I'd imagine it would but I would have no idea how to do that and make it look good.

Adding DIY rubbers is a solution, yes. Oddly, I think some GAFers have used rubbers from their 360s. Haha.

The easiest and most popular material are the rubber feet of the 360. Just pull two off and stick them to the top screen. You probably won't even need glue as the adhesive residue from 360 will suffice. If you don't have a 360, any rubber from any device would do, obviously. I used ones from an old netbook (bottom photo).

Hi guys. I thought I'd show you what I just did today to solve this problem for myself.

All I did was put these clear epoxy stickers at the bottom corners of my 3DS. They are about half an inch, and if the size is too big for you, it could be trimmed down with a pair of scissors so they only hits the rubber bumpers. It does NOT touch the d-pad at it's original size (just misses it, which is not a big deal) and you won't notice them while using the device. (I apologize for the low quality picture lol.)

Here is a picture of the 3DS closed (from the front):

And one from the side:

As you can see, it really isn't noticeable unless you are looking for it.

I got 72 of these stickers I believe on Amazon for about $5 US. Definitely worth the price. The bottom screen is not leaving lines of my top screen anymore and I don't have to worry about sticking a microfiber cloth in between the screens now.

All credit goes to Neuromancer for the idea :]

Does anyone know of any retail stores that sell spare rubber feet? I have an xbox 360 but would prefer not to use those... I know I could always order them online I'm sure but I'd rather just pick some up somewhere if possible.

Edit: What are epoxy stickers? Never heard of em.

Check Wal-Mart in the hardware dept. I'm sure they sell 'em for furniture so it doesn't scratch floors, etc.

I don't really know what they are actually used for.. maybe scrap booking? They are just small, clear stickers that are raised a tiny bit.

It's definitely a problem but not a killer one. I have a black unit so I just used two small black felt adhesive circles on the upper corners of the top screen. Barely keeps the two halves from making contact. Doesn't look bad at all and doesn't get in the way of my hands.

I'm experiencing this problem, too. I already have permanent scratches on my top screen because of it. I'm unsure of what I should do about it, though. The scratches really bother me, and I'd probably like to pick up a new 3DS when there's a new color or a limited edition bundle, but I'd really hate to replace my 3DS if I can't transfer all of my data to a new one. I know a lot of you would probably find it silly, but I'm really attached to my 3DS and all of its data. I even sent a rather lengthy email to Nintendo about the situation.

Anyway, they just got back to me today, but instead of giving a real response they just told me to call them to discuss the situation. Hopefully I'll be able to have this resolved in a satisfactory way after calling them.

I would much rather just slip a cloth in my 3DS and close it then glue on stickers or bumpers.

Does anyone else just toss a cleaning cloth in it ans shut it? this should not cause any problems right?

So here's my temporary solution. Grabbed some rubber feet from work.

I say temporary because I will be sending it into Nintendo someday before my warranty is up.

Swapped out the screen protector last night as the previous one had been ruined by the scratches. No bubbles but I always end up with a speck or two of something under the protector. Ah well, better than scratches.

I did but it got annoying fast. No issues when I did it though.

I just went with small, black felt stickers. They're not "glued" on and easily removed.

I see a line on my top screen as well (left side). I already bought a better case to prevent any pressure on the 3DS. Still... I'm not putting these rubber feets on my 3DS, it ruins the look way too much.

I took a different approach with placement as when the rubber feet are on the outside it still leaves room for the top screen to flex under pressure.

Here's how mine looks:

The black 3DS looks super sexy in person... (the aqua too, but I prefer the black one)...

But, it is very hard to take good pictures of the system. I don't know the reason. Maybe it's because the glossy material?
