A game like this has been proposed, attacked, defended, ridiculed and hyped on GAF quite often already.
Personally I'd be interested, but I think that it'dbe hard to get right. Not only the characters and deciding on a fight system that 'feels' okay with such different characters, but everything around it. Memorable music/stages/gimmicks from Sony games? The impact of having a Pokeball or a Mario mushroom as items is a lot higher than, uhm, I don't even know what items Sony could use. Resistance health pack thingies? |

According to Wikipedia, here's every franchise Sony Computer Entertainment owns. They could also pull in a ton of semi-owned or guest characters.
Fake edit: wow, I had like a twenty minute complete lockdown of my computer as I was writing this post, sorry if the information was posted in the time I was absent. |

I'm not seeing this game. Of course it would be kinda cool if this happend, but Sony doesn't really have the first party characters to pull this off. Sony only has one or two characters that have the "mainstream" recognition. Sackboy and maybe Nathan Drake. Sony's characters just aren't that popular to those of Nintendo.
The characters I could see in this game are: Sackboy, Jak (III) and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Some hig and a chimera, Kratos + some othe from GoW, and Sly. But none of those names are as hot as Nintendo's Link, Mario or pokemons. This is not a fan boy comment. I have only had playstations. |

If Snake was in SSBM then he should surely be in the Sony fighter. Other third party characters that are associated with Playstation like Dante and Cloud could fill out the roster. And if they would actually include Parappa then they could dig up quite a few old IPs too like Tombi. Nintendo included Ness and Lucas in Smash Bros. and only one of the Mother games came out in the west and none came out in Europe so I'd say anything's fair game. It would be cool if they had a Demon's Souls character but the Maiden wouldn't work, maybe if it was a boss like Allant or one of the NPCs like Biorr/Ostrava it could work.

Well, like I said earlier, they only need Snake, Cloud and Crash Bandicoot from third-parties. Maybe a Tekken character too, but not really necessary.

I really think they have enough recognizable characters from recent years to bring in Sony fans and then they can fill in with old characters like Sir Daniel, Rau from Mark of Kri (might be messing up their names a bit) and some other older characters like that. I know my cousin who is like 13 loves Smash Bros. and doesn't know who the Ice Climbers or Pit are from anything but Smash Bros. But even if people haven't played the Jak or Ratchet games, Sony fans know them. I really think this would work. You'd just have to tone down Kratos' moves and stuff I guess. Like people said you can't have him ripping off Sly's head, but I am sure they could come up with a cool moves with him anyway. If done well, this could be sweet in my eyes. I hope this is true.

this guy is senior level designer. Some comments from his twitter. https://twitter.com/#!/TheAuburnSky
1.Our capture station and waiting area - Parappa is a permanent resident http://twitpic.com/6a60jz 2.The character artist sitting a row ahead of mine is modeling polygonal female boobies. Carry on... Then posted this pic ![]() 3.Our studio fighters getting their brawl on http://twitpic.com/6au76k 4.Racing to finish a level design doc for today's review - map layout is looking spiffy if I do say so myself. 5.Slam! Second level design pitch approved by our studio leads! Now onto Sony Santa Monica for a final green light. 6.In the middle of a skype video interview with a level design candidate from Osaka, Japan. 7.New Sony Playstation commercial vaguely foreshadowing our soon to be announced title - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=HBuK3EcY6vk 8.Checking out the original art assets from a Sony IP title we're appropriating for my level - very cool seeing this environment in raw form. 9.Fuck you clown! (THIS more or less confirms it) And looking at his previous work there are no fighting games. http://auburnsky.net/Game%20Port%20H...al%20Work.html Someone save these pics in case he removes them. |

I like how people belittle Sony's efforts to make a game like this based on selection alone, as if Smash players outside of the NeoGAF crowd knew who 80% of Smash characters were before Smash. I'll give you the fact that Sony doesn't have a Mario or Luigi, but that's it.
The range of of styles may make this weird, or way cooler than a roster of all cartoony characters. I'm not sure yet. |

I don't understand the idea of it having to be known characters to be successful. This isn't a multi plat game, if you own a PS3 you'll instantly know at least a handful of characters, and with the amount of PS2s and PS1s sold, I can't imagine many people not knowing Jack or something. Throw in some third party faves, and you have a game
I didn't know 1/2 of the roster for SSBM, but I still enjoyed the hell out of that game. |
