The economic forecast for the world economy has taken a sharp downward turn since their last financial report, so the yen issue has got worse, not better.

Every quarter, we get updated numbers for all Nintendo published titles that shipped 1 million or more within the current fiscal year. (So if a game exceeds 1 million LTD but some of that amount came from a previous FY, it won't be listed.) The data we get tomorrow (in the Supplementary Information about Earnings Release) will cover April - December 2011.

I'd be interested to hear your reasons for this. The economic outlook and particularly the situation with the euro is dire and the Vita costs more than the PS3 does and that comes with a capacious Hard Drive (just by way of a crude comparison).

I think that the Sony brand, and the PSP itself, have more currency in mainland European countries than in the US right now. There's a good reason why the term "Sonyland" was used quite regularly, even if the PS3 has done a lot to harm that.

As I said, I think Europe could be somewhere where the Vita could enjoy some moderate success but there's no way it's happening at the price it is now. The US would seem to be a harder sell, as the PSP has been flatlined there for ages and the Vita is an expensive proposition up against an apparently-resurgent, cheaper 3DS and a strong tablet/smartphone market.

PSP has seen some success in a few European markets in both software, and hardware sales so there actually is the chance Europe could have more Vitas than North America.

What I was going to say has been said: Europe is Sony's strongest market and smartphone/tablet/etc. competition seems stronger in the US.

But I didn't even mean the Vita would sell more in absolute terms. I was talking relatively, regarding how much market share the Vita will have in each place.

However, can't wait for first impressions from retailers. We have two big games like ACV, and I'm starting suspecting ACV could even outdo Revelations...but not due to low numbers of the latter. :P

It's usually the next day that we get some release dates.
We don't typically get new games, but there could be something on their schedule that we didn't know of.

I have been to 7 different stores - Bic in shibuya had AC5 earlier today, but the other 6 places (Tsutaya, Bic Shinjuku x2, sofmap, etc) were all sold out.

Either undershipped , shipped to preorders, or OMG Amored Phwoar 5

This seems like entirely unwarranted cynicism to me.

I mean, I'm not saying the DQVII remake will necessarily be, like, full-throated. Maybe it'll have fairly minimal newly-designed content. Maybe it'll be less attractive than people would like. Maybe it'll lean on too many reused assets and have a crappily-arranged soundtrack or something. But the idea that it'll just be the exact same engine with the same low-res sprites (and, what, no 3D? Because that engine really won't work well with 3D) strains credulity.

Local Chameleon Club - i attempted a flying get and was told "no" (which is unusual in itself!) and was advised that i would need to preorder to get in on the second batch.

Store clerk opened the preorder list (which in CC is pretty easy to see demand as each preorder is a large celotaped slip on a A4 sheet) i'd guestimate about 50 preorders?

For a relatively out of the way place - i'd say that's pretty impressive.

Sold out in my local Tsutaya too. It's going to do well i think, but i base that on other things rather than the above! can't extrapolate my local data

whether Revelations bombs or not, will be an important factor for future core releases on the 3DS, I believe.

oh definitely :) anything i post is super-anecdotal-tastic and shouldn't be a reflection of what will happen.

I only have to point at the fact i walked the streets of Tokyo on MH launch from 1am until 8am and managed to miss all the queues and came back thinking ... "bomba confirm?"

Mid february? What? That long? I wonder if people are gonna lose interest if they have to wait that long or just buy a used copy :/

Would be terrible, if true. Many sales would be lost to used copies. Guess we have now an additional explanation if sales are low.

With the flat sprites exposed for what they are, it becomes Paper Dragon Quest VII.

Unless I'm missing something, that the wholesalers are selling out doesn't mean the retailers will sell out immediately.

next shipment of Rev will be in Chameleon club and Tsutaya on saturday according to their signs, though they are the only places i saw today that were sold out. Everywhere else has a ton of stock, though doesn't mean that wholesale stockers aren't sold out (which i'd assume happens often? I can't imagine wholesalers sitting on stock... (?))

If the first shipment is really selling out so quickly (and not just in Azalyn's stores) without a second shipment in sight, they are absolutely killing RE:R :| Would be a real shame.

Uh, yeah, it's right. Wholesalers aren't retailers, they're the ones who distributes to retailers, IIRC. However, it's obvious Capcom should reship not in the mid of February, since in that case there could be a serious risk of a fall in interest.

If you're prepared with a second shipment, yes. Especially with Nintendo's possibly still highly inflexible cartridge manufacturing process.

Sure, but unless the game fails to sell the first shipment it will result in lost sales. No restock until mid february might be a sign, that Nintendo didn't manage to shorten production time for cartridges. Several DS games suffered from the lack of second shipment (SMT: Strange Journey and Infinite Space for example).

Btw. do we know if Vita suffers the same problems? I'm not versed in technical stuff so I don't know the difference between the kind of cartridges the Vita and the 3DS use.

Capcom at this point mismanaged things if they don't restock until mid-February and they are almost sold out. Nintendo's end sucks but it's been like that for a very long time. The restock issue is usually a big issue for small publishers who can't afford to take the risk of ordering a second shipment and it possibly not selling. Capcom should be better equiped and experienced at this point. Also I thought Capcom was rather notorious for channel stuffing.

Armored Core outselling RE would be crazy. What kind of numbers does AC normally do? I didn't think it was a particularly big seller.

"However, at that time, this pace was not the fastest in Japan’s video game history, since it was slower than that of the Game Boy Advance. But, the Nintendo 3DS did not lose its momentum even after the new year, and two weeks ago it broke the record of the fastest sales pace."

Famitsu, week 47:

GBA - 4,754,175
3DS - 4,698,418

It should pass in the week 48.

In the top 50, there's only Minna no Golf 6, 31st, for Vita. Yes, Wipeout didn't even do top 50.

Wii - 12
3DS - 12
PSP - 10
PS3 - 9
NDS - 5
360 - 1
Vita - 1
