Oh well. $85 off a Vita would have been 3DS price drop levels of great.

On CAG, someone claims that there's a "bonus redemption" in a few weeks, so those 50k points becomes 100 dollars. I have no idea how this works since I've never actually redeemed points at SDM before.

Seems to only be for Garnier products. SDM does have alot of points promotions for various products.

But these particularly 20x points days apply to almost everything in store, including electronics, and excluding the obvious like gift cards and prescription drugs. Which makes them very awesome.

Yep, there are bonus redemption days too, and I think they happen more often. There was even a "mega" bonus redemption day back in December, where you could get $125 for 50,000 points. I wasn't patient enough though :)

Anyways, SDM system is kind of weird, because you have to redeem points in certain sized "chunks". The normal values are listed below. Note that the larger the chunk, the better the value.

8,000 pts = $10
22,000 pts = $30
38,000 pts = $60
50,000 pts = $85
95,000 pts = $170

How does this work - do you get a gift card for the points or do you need to spend the points on a transaction that is 85 dollars?

You just ask to use the points at check out when you present your card. There are quirks (usually some pharmacy stuff doesn't count) but its very easy overall.

28. Shoppers Optimum Points may not be redeemed towards the purchase of the following products/services: prescription drugs, products containing codeine, gift cards and prepaid card products, wireless phone cards, stamps, Post Office stamps and merchandise, passport photos, tickets provided by Ticket Ops or any other event ticket provider, cigarettes and tobacco (where sold), lottery tickets, bus tickets and passes, delivery charges (where applicable), bill payments (where accepted), bottle deposits/returns, charitable donations, gift with purchases and any other items specified as exclusions from time to time. Shoppers Drug Mart reserves the right to add or delete products and services eligible for Shoppers Optimum Points redemption at any time, at its sole discretion, without notice.

Man, unless I find a Shoppers that carries games, I can't think of any worthwhile high priced items to buy. Hopefully they're still in the electronics game when the next gen hardware launches.

Where would you suggest looking to get one? I see it's on Amazon used, and there's even a seller that is willing to ship to Canada. Does this seem like my best bet?

All SDM stores should have a small electronics section with cameras, videogames, headphones, and various accessories. Makeup/cosmetics are also eligible and tend to be high-priced. And last year my mom bought like $200 worth of Jamieson vitamins heh.

I just try to take advantage of bonus points and bonus redemption days to stock up on basic necessities like shampoo and toilet paper. It's surprising how fast that can add up to $85.

I was hoping for a gift card that I could use over a long term. 85 bucks is a lot of shampoo and TP to buy anyway.

I actually have enough points for the top level redemption... but jeez, 170 bucks at SDM in one transaction? I really don't know what I can do for that.

Last night I bought a Kindle download with my US Kindle account. This morning I got a strange email from someone at Amazon customer service telling me that they noticed I'd 'tried' (succeeded) to buy a US Kindle title while not in the US, and that I'm invited to either update my account info with a change of address, or send them a bunch of ID via fax.

Sooo...has anyone else dealt with this? The email almost feels like spam, but it looks legit and coincided with my purchase. They're acting like I couldn't buy the book and need to take action to rectify this, but I clearly could and did. If they axed my account or suspended it pending receipt of proof of residence they presumably would have told me so explicitly, but the email seemed to have that sentiment as an undertone.

Do I have to worry about this?

When in doubt, contact Amazon directly. If it's legitimate, they'll get back to you.

If it's a scam, it's very concerning that a third party is tracking purchases made on Amazon.

I couldn't fax anything even if I wanted to, because I totally do not live in the US. The email (sent by kai@amazon.com, which seems rather informal) didn't address me by name, but did reference the book I bought by title. So if it's phishing the writer has an unsettling amount of info.

The email doesn't say I need to do anything; I assumed it was just trying to get me to give up the US address and stop giving them money for products they don't want me to buy because I live in the wrong country. On the one hand I'd like it to be a scam, because I don't want to deal with shit from Amazon for circumventing their international Kindle purchase restrictions. On the other, I'd hate to think some scam artist knew what books I was buying and when I was buying them.

I would contact Amazon directly and verify the email, but since I'm taking advantage of a loophole I'd rather not have them look too closely at my account. Writing that makes me feel dirty. Stuff like this is precisely why I never made a Japanese PSN account!

Without seeing the exact text it's hard to say, but it sounds more or less like a "hey, you're in another country, updating your billing info will make future purchases a lot easier!" sort of thing. Unless there is something threatening the viability of your account going forward, I get the impression its not really worth following up.

That was my assumption. I was hoping to get a lot of "oh yeah, Amazon send those emails out all the time, no worries" comments.

Here's the email:

Hello,

I see that you attempted to purchase "Ghosts Aliens [Kindle Edition]" while in a different country than the United States listed on your Amazon account. Certain Kindle titles are not available everywhere. We are reaching out to you to ensure the best possible service for your account.

If you have moved to a different country, you can easily update your country for your Amazon account at www.Amazon.com/manageyourkindle

If this is not the case, and you would like to share information that you live in the United States, we can be reached by fax at 001-206-266-1838 from outside the US, or 206-266-1838 from within the US. Helpful information includes:
– Passport
– Military ID
– Permanent Resident Card
– Driver’s License
– Other state photo identity card

We want to assure you that we handle this information in a secure manner: these are dedicated fax lines, staffed in an area with limited employee access. The fax is never printed, just converted to an electronic image that is used to check the country, then the image is deleted.

Best regards,

Account Specialist
Amazon.com
Your feedback is helping us build Earth's Most Customer-Centric Company.
http://www.amazon.com/your-account

Needless to say I did not click on any of the links.

Reading Amazon's help page, they claim they "Never ask you to reply with personal information. We collect personal information only through the Amazon.com website." This is in reference to credit card numbers, social security numbers, account passwords, etc; but this email sure is asking for a lot of personal info to be sent through channels other than the Amazon.com website.

Well I can't say since I don't own a Kindle but it definitely sounds like what I suggested. I would feign ignorance on the subject and wait for them to escalate it. There'a really no benefit for you to follow up because if you do, at worst you could lose access and at best...? Nothing happens.

The fax and all of that doesn't sound terribly surprising, and the email suggests you can update online first, so there's nothing alarming there. If they really care you'll see more of those emails.

If not I received a "Get $20 off purchases over $100" at Futureshop coupon in the mail, I'd have to buy something worth $0.01 additionally to the memory card, but it would come up to $80 for the purchase afterwards.

I was going to try today at Best Buy but I don't see why it wouldn't work. It's available for purchase and has free shipping so I don't see how they can deny it... they'll probably try though.

Yep. I was going to say that Costco is actually in their system as a retailer, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I was worried too, since I figured they might complain about memberships or whatever, but no problem on my end.
