They were "called out" on it, but they always admitted from the beginning that the screens were from the theater mode, which added a little more visual clarity. Besides, every game company does this. It just happens that Halo 3 had some of the worst aliasing of a major console game.

The reason why they are likely fake is that it uses material related to halo 4 that everyone has already seen.

The background with the halo 4 logo is from the wake up John poster

and the ring logo has never been used in halo 2 or 3 inside the game as far as I know, only for promotional/advertising purposes

Again I dont think we will see all of what they saw but I think its a safe bet to say we will see gameplay, SP or MP though most likely MP footage.
