Memory! :bow2

I'd rather hang out with CrookedTrees than whoever runs Ponygoons.

Ah ha, ha.

It seems every community like this goes through similar stages. Human psychology I guess?

The OG furries from the 90s would seem like the stereotype of bronies today; trying to pretend basically that everyone was 10 years old and innocent. In a way, one feels sympathy for some of them. They were trying to be noble about it. But their own discomfort with the fact that human beings could and would use materials for any purpose, including kinky ones, made them go off the deep end eventually.

When I actually went to some furry conventions, I felt they gave an accurate and surprisingly positive impression than internet crap does. They drive home that yes Virginia, there's a lot of porn, but also a lot of people who actually aren't there just for that. It puts the lie to the old "only 10% of furries...!" PR spin. But by the same token, gets the point across that it can be many things even with all the pr0n stuffing the channels.

Perhaps it's like some impressions people would have of anime; you might think it was mostly Naruto and hentai, defensive fanboys would try to deny it and look stupid, but go to a con and you find the tons of hentai, softcore porn, and shonen cheese don't overrule there being other stuff.

My issue with the furry conventions/meetups, and I've only been to one or two, is the older (part of the original 90s crowd) furries tend to be the ones with severe objections to anything sexual in the fandom. They also tend to sexually creep on the younger highschool/college aged furs for "platonic cuddles" >____> I hate this fandom sometimes.

I feel like most furry conventions should have age restricted rooms. Maybe make the entire convention 16+ (sort of like the less family-friendly They Might be Giants shows :p), but keep an under 25 section and an over 25 section. It'd make the younger crowd feel significantly safer, sort of like the GLBT meetup areas having age divisions.

Though, making me think back to my college group meets, we were pretty much all awkward dorks but the only guy who actually came off as creepy was the morbidly obese 40-something that hosted the whole thing.

But I dunno. Is that a generational thing, is that born out of where the community was at the time someone came in, or is it just that the older you get the creepier being a furry is?

I kind of feel like "furry-Lucario" is just an internet loon persona of mine, the weirdest parts of me leaking out onto neoGAF so I don't have to act like this in real life and discard any notions of professionalism or high social activity. :p

Or maybe it's just an attention seeking thing born of a kink. I have no idea. I enjoy it quite a bit, and it's likely a small part of my personality (as well as a nice way to meet likeminded people)....

I forgot what I was getting at.

I suppose the furry community is just so goddamn accepting that some aspies just enjoy the attention and unconditional friendship, regardless of what the community is. I know this doesn't explain all of the older furs at conventions, but it certainly explains some of them.

I always just try to make friends with the older, weirder furs, try to pick their brain and see their thought process a bit, cheer them up. *shrug* I'm really in no place to judge anyone for their social quirks unless they're being manipulative or creepy.

I mean, I'm a motherfucking furry. Glass houses and all that.

It sounds like a generational thing, maybe. Consider that older attendees may have a different perspective on the whole thing, coming from an earlier time when there wasn't an easy way to interact and share with others, as the Internet provides today. The more antisocial types may not be very experienced with interacting with the wider audience that accumulated over time, and knowing what sort of behavior is appropriate with what people.

Just an opinion though, as I don't have that sort of longterm view.

I don't think there's a rule about older = creepier, as I've met some genuinely nice older guys (50+) who (can you believe it) actually came for the clean art. They're like old disney fans and stuff.

However, there is some truth to the stereotype of the middle aged furry creep who originated in the 90s. There are unwholesome stories, especially from the west coast, about creepy men settling in the "anthro fandom" because it was the subculture of last resort and it had a lot of inherent appeal to younger people. It also offered, literally, an innocent cartoon face to hide behind.

By the same token, some people from that era do not actually mean ill, but they were folks with no social skills who landed in a group that didn't promote refining them. Now they've gotten older without evolving. I try to have sympathy for them, but do steer well clear.

Ultimately it all could just be a symptom of the fandom starting so small and tucked away in a niche. When you go to the fringes, you tend to find:

1. People there because the fringes are interesting.

2. Harmless outcasts who mean well but don't fit the mainstream.

3. Not so harmless outcasts who make a legitimate case for being ostracized.

Type 2's inadvertently perpetuate nerdy loser stereotypes, and type 3's promote the creep factor.

This is actually one reason why I personally started ignoring the subculture, to be candid... there seem to be a few too many type 3's that are organizers of the community, who have their position due to age and tenure. A few too many people in charge of the events and sites who are, indeed, old creeps...

The bolded part actually relates to what a lot of people like about the community, in principle at least. A bunch of people way back, perhaps with noble intentions if naive, did want to create a community that would not actually run people through the grinder of "adult life is high school forever and you can't escape".

It let to the creation of the myth - with some truth behind it - of furries being one big happy family where everyone was accepted. And you know what? Some people actually try to live up to that, cynicism be damned.

As a community-wide meme though, it did create exploits that creeps hacked. Furries suffered badly from the geek social fallacies and there was much fear of being an evil "ostracizer" if you merely drew the line between accepting an awkward geek, and turning a blind eye to a creep. As is often the case with subculture politics, many actual creeps even used this against people, setting themselves up as community boosters who made a show of welcoming everyone with open arms.

The reason why I am still in touch with a fair number of furry/former furry folk is because there are circles, here and there, that live up to the more noble idea.

Perhaps new generations of people in the community can simply be a bit more canny, and try to be open while actually having a well developed creep radar (and lack of fear about calling a creep a creep.)

I dunno, it's not sexually direct enough. I mean, I've had people confused that I don't have a specific bra size for my character. I'm like, she has boobs, kinda comes with being female, that's as far as I've thought about that. Then you have people talk about their character's 38DD breasts and I'm just like, "you're obviously male".

Ha ha, your expressiveness in writing looks fine to me.

Don't worry about me, I just waggle my fingers in the general direction of the internet while doing other things, and when I look back there's all this shit there.

Speaking of fursonas...I'm curious, how many of you here actually have one? I've always felt kinda odd being a furry but not having a fursona... That's not to say that I believe that you have to have one if you're a furry, of course. Though I probably would have one if I could decide what species it should be, lol.

I don't really have one. I sort of did when I was younger, a German Shepherd dressed like a member of the team from Reservoir Dogs, but I never did anything with him. Now I guess I'm a generic fox. Since I don't really participate socially in the fandom I never bothered. Can't even come up with a decent name for myself. :/

Most of it was actually 5 minutes stream of consciousness writing it out - something I've never really been able to do.

You can be any kind of species as far as I am concerned lol.
I always drew myself as some kind of cat cuz I liked cats (plus, I am a leo, so it makes sense).
My "fursona", as you've seen a few pages back, is the lion:

Most of the characters I have also have an anthro form because I like animals in general and it helps further differentiate the characters (aggressive bunny v.s. aggressive bird etc.)

I should totally post more of my old furry art, since I did most when I was little! ... Prepare yeselves~~

I was 10 when I drew this. Notice the lack of eyebrows, as I focused on trying to keep my furries more cartoony. Also, back then I didn't think eyebrows made any sense on furries because wouldn't they be hidden by all the fur?!

11 for this one (yeah, the cat and bird have "pets" too >___> ):

14 now... Ignore the one human in the pic. xD Notice how SOME characters have eyebrows yet others do not to preserve their original designs. Newer characters often have eyebrows now.

And... 19 when I made this one:

And 21 when I start to feel really old... but decide to reboot some characters. Notice they all have eyebrows. I also differentiate between the less human proportioned "animalinian" characters (shorter, "cuter", cartoonier) from the more human-propotioned ones (more "serious"):

Wah.. so much nostalgia for a snapshot of a 10 year period of furry art...
And then we skip to now and it's suddenly 2012. ;_____; What have I been doing with my life.

I don't have one because I'm not a weirdo. Ha ha ha I'm so alone...

Seriously, I feel as though I need to be able to draw competently to deserve having original characters. Plus I could never have one represent me. That would be scary.

You have done more artistically than I ever have and you're too quick to look back on these negatively. Also your bird character is adorable but I might be biased. Reen?

Oh, wow, those are amazing! I wish I could draw like that... =/

I keep bouncing between a cat and a fox in my mind, but even if I do settle on one or the other (or something else completely), I can't ever decide on a color, design, etc. I'm just not good at coming up with original content, I guess. =P

I kinda feel the same in some ways. I'm probably not going to ever draw my fursona (and yes, I hate the word too, but for lack of a better term...=P), so what's the point in even having one? lol It just feels weird being a furry but not having a fursona for some reason. I know you don't have to have one, because just liking anthropomorphic art
porn
is enough to call yourself a furry (and that's pretty much the extent of my furriness anyway, like many of you here), but it just feels like something's missing if I don't. Like, if someone asks me what my fursona is, or what species I would consider myself...I have no idea, lol. Then again, I guess it really doesn't matter, because I'm probably not going to be making art, and definitely not going to be writing stories or anything like that, and I'm not one of those people who think I'm actually part animal or anything, lol, so it's not like I need to choose a species for myself or anything... I guess it's just furry peer pressure. XD Though, it would be nice to decide on a species so I can pick out a good tail and ears. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fursuiter (though I have nothing against it), and I wouldn't even wear just tails and ears in public (maybe a cute hat that had ears on it...but that's as far as I'd go), but I do think ears and tails are kinda neat and fun to wear, but I'd only ever wear them to conventions or similar places where everyone's dressed up in weird stuff anyway, lol.

That's really the only requirement for a character (and hey, there's a word for it that isn't stupid!). It just needs to be something that fits you. I mean, hell, I can't draw my character for shit, I'm not about to write anything for her, but... I like rabbits, I like her aesthetic, and it fits me.

As for the other stuff.... you don't need a character, specifically. You don't even need one, specifically; you can bounce between being a cat when you feel like being a cat and being a fox when you feel like being a fox. That's one of the best parts and biggest secrets of furry, we're all just making it up as we go along. :p

Also, Pawstar does awesome ear hats. :3 Mine's over 5 years old, still holds up, and you can customize!
