It's sad there's a lack of graphics options, I expected differently from Bugbear given their past. Still, glad the PC version came out.

It's probably capped at 60. I dunno. I can try it out once I get off work.

No rush. I can't be swayed at 49.99. 39.99 was my temptation mark. And 39.99 with a pre-order discount would have sold me. I can wait it out a bit.

Yeah, it's VSync.

So, good news: overriding AA via NVCPL works and really helps cut out jaggies, but it's going to take some experimentation to get the best results as 4xMSAA+4xSGSSAA appears to kill detail a bit too much and also causes some weird fade in as you approach distant scenery.

Compare this shot with the one from my previous post:

Has the same effect as FXAA, essentially, blurring the scene. Don't have time to play with Inspector tonight, but may do tomorrow.

So far, the game itself appears to work and the online stuff appears to be there, it's just the usual sloppy, no settings port (I haven't tried kb+m controls). Kinda disappointing considering the decent PC games Bugbear used to make.

It's amazing how quickly you can drop from 1st or 2nd place right to the bottom of the pack. I don't know if I would call this game unfair, but it demands perfection in a weird way.

LOL I almost got 1st my first race, screwed up my drift in the last corner. AI cars make mistakes. 1st race was a lot of fun. Had 2 burnout style take downs. Think I'll turn of the event camera.

Forcing AA in CCC fucks up the visuals. Using Super Sampled AA and HQ textures in CCC and visuals look good while it appears maintaining 60fps (6970)

Literally holding it down isn't right. I just smoked the 1st 2 races using the default car and there is a lot of skill involved with the drift button using the high drift cars. Strategy a plenty when to use your power cause once you use it it's gone until you build it again.

Another review

Metro Game Central - 8/10

http://www.metro.co.uk/tech/games/89...-leaping-ahead

In Short: It's not really Ridge Racer, but whether you consider it a reboot or a spin-off this is the best arcade racer since Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit.

Pros: Brilliantly destruction racing, with a heavy but enjoyable driving model and some great destruction effects. Excellent track editor.

Cons: More game modes would've been nice and the multiplayer in particular can seem a bit bare bones at time. Supposedly edgy presentation is trying too hard.Another review

Great reviewers Game Central so its good to see them like it as much as I do.

Oh joy, another release unable to be patched without downloading the entire game again.

1.8GB to update to v1.02 and no patch notes.

Edit: Enjoying the game, but yea, half-hearted PC port, especially as you can't redefine keyboard controls (you can pick between a few presets however, so yay for that).

Oh Bugbear, how have you forgotten the userbase that resulted in your best successes?

I got it up and running but my problem is, I can use my 360 controller all the way until it is time to race, then it will only accept K/M to accelerate. I can change the songs with my the controller but actually moving the car is a no-go. I go to options and change it, I got back to look, still K/M is defaulted. I don't know what is going on with this. I want to play this shit, lol.

That's what I enjoyed about Flatout: UC. You can never be too confident in that game. Your skills aren't the only thing that would determine the outcome of the race. Hit a dip or some inanimate object on the road at a funny angle as you steer towards the finish line and it's game over as you see the pack fly by you.

Random losses at the end of a 5 min race that are out of your control is a GOOD THING? wtfffffffffffff

PS. I liked Flatout UC, but the random stuff like that was not a good thing; not at all. Who wants racing games that aren't based on skill?

Two people showed up to play this game on Giant Bomb's TNT. TWO! One wanted to leave.

From what Jeff said, I believe Namco delivered US reviews copies for the game on a Wednesday the day after it "came out," which accounts for the sporadic reviews.

I can't believe they sent this game out to die. Trying to find people to play online has been hit or miss right now. The most people I've been in a race with is 3 on the 360.

Really don't see what Eurogamer means by needing to hold the drift button through an entire corner. Coping just fine.

I don't know about the full game, but at least in the preview versions pushing the fun button just a few times quickly guaranteed to get you drifting.

For those that are playing the PC version and using the controller, how are you accomplishing this? Every time I select the Xbox 360 controller, it defaults back to the K/M method. This is frustrating. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first check I always do if something's wrong is to temporarily unplug other USB peripherals, like Bluetooth dongles or additional controllers.

I've had two instances in the last couple years (Area 51 and NFS: The Run) where that fixed a problem with recognising my controller.

Random elements interfering with the race? That isn't even remotely fun to me and I can't imagine how anyone could enjoy such a thing. I would quit the game and delete it forever if that was the norm.

It's really no different the PGR's hand brake though that just really required a tap. Really a lot of hoopla about this DRIFT button for nothing. Going into a corner you press it till you get drifting and let go to maintain your speed and your drift line.

Eh, this game isn't nearly as hard as some of you made it sound like :P won the first race on my first try. Also, my fps is limited to 120 instead of 60 ;) (120hz display)

EDIT: Some people (including me) have problems launching the game, the game crashes when it tries to connect to the ridge racer server so until they get the server fixed or something you need to run it in offline mode.

All depends on the angle. Sometimes it can feel quite random though. I think the speed you're hitting the wall at factors into things as well.

There's a lot going on under the hood of this game and as I learn the rules of the physics and game play things become a lot clearer. The game is packed with quite the learning curve and not enough information to help you improve.

I think a decent tutorial would be a start. I personally don't mind not having one but for the average joe who doesn't hit a message board or see tweets from BugBear it would be an accessible way to understand the dynamics of the gameplay.

Guess I'm in the minority but I find the AI to be a little on the easy side. The trick to drifting isn't holding down the drift button, holding it down makes you drift slower and gives you more control in sharper corners. Most of the time you let go of the drift button to go through corners faster.

So far I've completed the first two areas/zones with winning every race on my first try :| . I did the first drift event a few times to get the hang of it. You also shouldn't make big corrections when drifting, try to just lightly move the stick, "tapping" or making large corrections makes it way harder and you can spin out. Also, in fast corners you shouldn't touch the steering at all when drifing, or try to correct/adjust as little as possible.

I'm improving and finished all the events in the first part of the city but I only got first on a couple. I've noticed that the drift button doesn't need to be held down either.

I think the big thing is that I'm being very particular about using my boost. I only use it when I feel it's necessary. In a game like Burnout, I'd earn boost so easily that I would have my finger constantly on the button. It's not quite as easy to earn boost in Unbounded.

Bought the game off of Steam last night and managed to squeeze a quick play session before having to call it a night. It took me five or six tries to get first place in the very first event in the game which I found surprising. When I stopped simply trying to drive well, started being more aggressive, started using/abusing the powerslide more and managed to chain together a quick series of power boosts from takedow..err frags, extended powerslides and using the shortcuts I managed to pull ahead to first position in the first lap and stay in that position for the rest of the race. Only got challenged once, took that racer out.

It's not a dyed-in-the-wool Ridge Racer, which some people won't be able to get over, but it looks like it's got the potential to be an awesome arcade racer. Looking forward to playing more of it.
