Why did Suikoden Tactics get such a bad rap?
#1
I stopped playing the Suikoden series after 2, so I'm not really sure how 3, 4 and 5 are- but I noticed that this game seems to get a lot of ire?
It seemed like a really solid SRPG to me; the elemental panel system was interesting and seemed executed well. My memory is hazy, to be honest, but honestly, I have played much, much, much worse SRPGs - I found Suikoden Tactics quite fun to be honest. Maybe I should replay it to see if maybe my memory is flawed. Just random topic of curiousity. |

I think most people ignore it because it was a continuation of what most people consider the worst entry in the series.
The game was fine for me, though since IV was my favorite game in the series (really). Loved getting to know a little bit more about some of the characters. The story was stronger than IV's.. but that's because IV didn't have a story so that's not saying much. |

I loved Suikoden I and II, and SRPGs might possibly be my favorite gaming genre. Match made in heaven, I thought. But for whatever reason, it just never clicked with me. Started off really slow and it just felt plodding to play. I ended up dropping it pretty quickly. I don't think I really gave it a fair shake.

because it's terrible, I dont know how they managed to make a full SRPG worse than the SRPG sections of other suikoden games where it's just a minor part. I really wanted to like it, a suikoden srpg should be amazing to me but it's just boring and unfun, at least give me a castle and 108 stars to collect

I've only played suikoden 1 and 2 and this and I had a blast with it. It was honestly one of the few games on the DS that had me sucked and I remember having a hard time putting it down until I had beat it. Yes it wasn't really a traditional suikoden game, but it was definatly a good game.

I like both GS4 and Rhapsodia/Suikoden Tactics, but I may be a tad biased, so...
But yeah, people don't want to play it because it's linked to Genso Suikoden IV, and to get a pretty good character, you need a GS4 save to import in (which, I guess, you could find on the Internet now). It isn't as deep as you'd want an SRPG to be, but I wasn't asking for much and I basically got something that was FFT in a Suikoden skin with elemental panels. The narrative is much better than GS4's. I wrote this short post up a while ago detailing why I liked it, if anyone feels like reading it. I also thought that GS4 and Rhapsodia had very good soundtracks, with both featuring one of my favourite themes in the series. I think the only Suikoden game I outright dislike in terms of being a "Suikoden game" is Tierkreis. Even the new PSP game shaped up to be better in terms of narrative (though I haven't gotten all 108 stars for that one yet). |

Ranking posts in 3...2...1...
There aren't any Suikodens on DS or PSP. I have no idea what you're on about. |

Not a bad game at all, good story and nice interplay with Suikoden 4 but most people are pretty lukewarm or don't like that so they didn't want to play Tactics. I like the two as a set more than I do Suikoden 3 but 3 is the only one of the series I don't like.

The narrative for 3 is great, I liked the skill system (E to S ranked abilities), characters in the convoy slot supported the battle party this time around, Chris is awesome, and the soundtrack has quite a few gems (but even the soundtrack overall falls short for me -- especially that awful battle tune). The arranged versions of some of the better tracks on the GS3 arranged album, and a bunch of other arrange albums, are better. I still enjoy 3, but not for reasons I'd normally enjoy a game. |

I was going to say that "bad rep" and "bad rap" have different meanings, but Webster's actually has an entry for "[bad] rap" as "a negative and often undeserved reputation or charge". So I guess you could use either one.
On topic, I tried to play this game three or four times and was always put off (read: to sleep) by the plodding intro and the stiff cardboard unit models. I'd pop it back in the PS2 for another try, but I finally gave my copy away a few months ago. |

Suikoden Tactics is a good game. It actually makes Suikoden IV better, which is a feat in itself. (Not that I hate IV, it's just very mediocre.) Is it an AMAZING SRPG? No. But it does have it's merits and I did enjoy playing it. And even though the ending was crazy rushed and pretty sloppy, at least it actually contributed to the the Suikoden mythos. I'd take another Suikoden Tactics (or Suikoden IV even) over a Tierkreis, anyday.
Pro Tip: Suikoden IV and Tactics should always be played in tandem for a more fulfilling and enjoyable experience. |

suiko tactics is a good game, even better if you play it after suiko 4. S ranking missions was necessary if you wanted to get the better stuff, or even additional party members? music is great, the artwork for new and returning characters got improved. you won't get very far if you don't utilize the elemental panel system, optional missions can be challenging. i could never warm up to the story or some of the voice acting though.....
that's because she is girl :( really bothered me. it's the biggest gripe i had with the game. |

Anyway, never did play Tactics. It's plentiful and always cheap used, so I've always waited to grab it. |
