Haven't been in this thread in a while, and I see these discussions:

- Arguing over Dark Souls vs Demons Souls bosses
- Preemptive hate over the technical quality of the PC port because the director has no idea about PC development and won't say if it runs better
- GFWL hate
- People freaking out that the new content might not come to consoles (it totally will)

Am I missing anything? I'd be shocked if you can't change the resolution. Are there even any other PC games that don't let you do this?

No 60fps, no buy. I haven't played Dark Souls yet, and if they limit it to 30fps there's bugger-all reason to choose the PC version over console.

Regardless, I'll buy the PC version. I only speak for myself, but if putting up with a sub-par port is the price of future Souls games getting better ones and modding support, it's worth it.

Considering the fact that unfinished versions of the new bosses were found on the disc, and existing footage of new stuff may have been running on PS3, this is actually quite plausible.

DX:HR was a rather good port come to think of it. I wasn't even aware that the PC version wasn't a separate branch until it was point out to me that it was ported from the console version. Mouse-driven drag-and-drop inventory, number bar hotkeys for weapons, full set of graphics options. The only bit of oddity was that the FOV options was in the gameplay section instead of graphics.

Yeah if they care so little about the PC port by making it GFWL in 2012 and now we're seeing it may not even have basic graphics options or framerate improvements, you can bet your ass they didn't develop this new content for a PC port. This was unannounced console DLC.

I just found out about the new info and I can't say I'm surprised. As soon as it was announced it would use GFWL I had a bad feeling it was going to be a shit port so I went out and bought the ps3 version cheap from a friend. I intend to finish the game this time.

Too be honest I wasn't going to buy it on PC until it was like $10 on Steam anyway due to being GFWL. I find that part alone to be unacceptable in a 2012 PC market, but seeing this getting closer to being a total catastrophe of a port doesn't surprise me.

Will it be though? I mean I was reading how there might not even be a resolution option and talks of locked framerates. Though I guess the framerate can always be unlocked, it's happened in other bad PC ports.

I'm betting on a re-release. There might be technical issues preventing DLC since they didn't program the game in mind for that. And the expansion plus the new online features sound pretty extensive.

Even if all the very worst rumors are true (and I still don't believe the resolution thing for a second) the game would still run at a stable 30 FPS, and I'd probably be able to force AA.

So, better, just not better to the extent that it should be.

What a turd of a port. I have the 360 verson and was planning on maybe building a new rig to play it on PC but even if the community stands up and fixes some of these issues it's still not a positive. I guess I'll just wait for the dlc announcement for consoles. Still really curious to see what this pvp zone is about.

yea you could be right about that although as it says on the article.

Most importantly, Miyazaki asked if we remembered Artorias the Abysswalker. Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition will allow people to travel through time to the past and play as Sir Knight Artorias.

Don't know if it means to play as him or to fight him as a boss.That part needs to be clarified.

Rumors? It was all gathered from interviews with the developer himself from multiple websites. I think it's more than enough reason to be worried.

This really seems like namco just saying put it out with as little work as possible.

While it does seem possible "fixed resolution" could be in response to textures, I wonder if fixing the resolution is because of the HUD? Though most games can scale that, and I figure it shouldn't be THAT hard to put scaling in, so... what the hell?

Eh, I'm just going to wait and see if the PS3 version gets the new stuff as DLC, or if Blighttown is a full 30 FPS. Just have to hope Namco Bandai isn't so reprehensible as to keep the new content PC-exclusive as an incentive to double dip, despite the other big angle (better performance) being utterly squandered.

i bought Ninja Blade during the Steam summer sale last year for $9.99 ...and completed it back then, but redownloaded it today to see what graphics options were included in that game.

so here are the in game graphic options from Ninja Blade (2009 From Software):

Resolution = 640x480 up to 1920x1080
Anti Aliasing = off, 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x
Screen Size = off, on (full screen/Windowed mode)
Refresh Frequency = 56hz up to 75hz
Texture = low, high
Vertical Synchronization = off, on
Frame Rate Setting = 30FPS Max, Variable (lock to 30fps or 'Variable' for uncapped FPS)
Frame Rate = off, on (toggles display of framerate in game)
Shadows = off, low, average
Overall Quality = low, average, medium

(some kinda strange settings there for Shadows and Overall Quality ...ie, 'average' and 'medium' being the highest settings?? weird)

i have 2 GTX560 1gig cards in SLI, but disabled SLI to try the game out. with 1080p and maxed settings/vsync'd ...i was getting 60fps 98% of the time. that's with 4x anti aliasing enabled and FXAA enabled in the Nvidia control panel. so performance is very good with an average graphics card.

i did notice that when using the in game vsync that the game would have some random jitter in the framerate, but would remain @ 60fps while this was happening (at least the game was reporting 60fps). to fix that, i disabled vsync in the game and enabled it via the Nvidia control panel. doing that made the random jitter go away ...or at least go away for the most part. it seemed pretty well perfect then.

so anyway ...there's a decent amount of PC settings in Ninja Blade, a 2009 From Software title, so i can't see why Dark Souls in 2012 wouldn't have something along those lines as well.

i sure hope so anyway.

Morning. I just read the interviews with Miyazaki from Guardian and from Famitsu. I don't think there's much room for misunderstanding here. What he says is very clear, although it does sound weird and it seems to reflect the lack of experience he has in terms of doing PR for this sort of thing, or understanding the market.

There are a few things he makes very clear:

- The PC version of Dark Souls is a Bandai Namco Games initiative which was brought up after the release of the console version. Remember that From Software published the PS3 version themselves in Japan, while Bandai Namco requested the 360 version for the international market. This seems similar, and Bandai Namco is footing the entire bill and helping them with development as well.

- The PC version is 70-80% complete, the content is basically all at the end stages of development, with the focus being balancing and QC right now. In particular Bandai Namco has been helping them with QC and specifications.

- Miyazaki says that the base game is intended to be a straight port with no change in resolution and he specifically says not to expect 60 fps. This is probably his most controversial statement, because it does seem to suggest that it will run at a locked resolution and framerate. Until he clarifies further, I do feel that is the intended message to manage expectations.

- With regards to how big the new areas are, he mentions in the Japanese interview that if you consider each "are" as a place where you enter into a new sort of setting or situation and the game displays an area name on screen, there will be 3 of these areas being added. One of these areas in particular is something he had in mind which is based on the past history of Darkroot Garden. The actual design of the area is brand new though, and not a rehash.

- There are two questions in the Japanese interview which Miyazaki very frankly said he was unable to comment on. One is regarding any changes to PvP, to which he said that he cannot talk about it at the moment, but he implies there will be some sort of new features which will follow in the spirit of Dark Souls' experimental online nature.

- The other question was about a Japanese release for this product, to which he says he also cannot answer the question right now. Since Bandai Namco does not publish the game in Japan, it seems From Software isn't very sure about what they're going to do with it domestically at the moment. All they are focused on right now is finishing the PC version for international release, while they try to work something out for the other fans.

What I personally read from these interviews is that the ball is really in Bandai Namco Games' court here, and not From Software. They seem to have full control over all the technical and publishing elements of the PC version, and since they're paying for the development, it's probably also up to them to decide if they want to turn that into DLC as well for the console versions. On Miyazaki's part, he seems dedicated to add value to the new release, and is putting substantial effort into making it worthwhile for people looking forward to that content.

Aside from that, he seems very naive and inexperienced with regards to what PC gamers expect, and so he probably doesn't realize the backlash of what he is saying is causing. To him, he probably considers it a good thing if they can develop a PC version which is equal in performance to the console game without making compromises. He probably hasn't considered the natural advantages of PC hardware to make the game performance automatically better.

That's my two cents.

Well, I hope at least resolution gets addressed, even if it's with black bars (hell, I'd stick with them because that's the "intended view", much like Witcher 2 on PC... and it's a game where I'd rather have a wider view). I can see unlocking the FPS being problematic though, but honestly just remaining 30 FPS reliably through the ENTIRE game is the very least I want.
