Megaman X had the coolest thing where defeating certain stages had an impact on other stages. I don't remember specifics but one stage lost all of its power, making some parts much easier. Always thought this was amazing since it took the original concept of fighting bosses in the right order to a whole other level (no pun intended).

Hopefully someone can provide more detail since I'm sure everyone noticed it, it's been awhile since I've played it.

Edit: found a good example.,.Defeating Chill Penguins stage causes the destruction to spill over to Flame Mammoths stage, extinguishing all of the fire in his level.

Anyway, like the second poster, I was a bit shocked at the static on the radio right before a call in GTA. Really really cool detail.
I don't get this. Car radios are supposed to get static-y before a phone call...?

Ill go ahead and point out Samus' HUD in Metroid Prime has more attention to detail than most games.

  • Animations in the Hud Icons
  • Helmet material visible and animated.
  • Slime effect on visor.
  • Steam effect on visor.
  • Water effect on visor.
  • Static effect on visor.
  • Ice effect on visor.
  • Glare of Samus' face on visor when a lighting effect nearby illuminates her face.

I think im missing a few but DAMN! Nowadays FPS games dont even have a fraction of the attention to detail in the HUD/Visors.
Nowadays it's limited to just:
  1. Blood effect on periphery of screen
  2. Blood effect + red filter all over the damn screen

Baseball Stars for NES had some great quirks for the time it was made. This was one of the first sports games with player portraits, and it was done Mr. Potato Head style by randomly selecting from a pool of different face parts to make a unique face. Lots of different batting animations, as well, including hit-by-pitch animations. As seen in my avatar, if a female player was hit by a pitch, she would collapse into a pile of tears.

Beat storm eagle, ship crashes into Spark Mandrill's stage. No energy balls go through floor, and the lights flicker

Beat Launch Octopus, Sting Chameleon's stage floods, which is actually necessary to grab a powerup

From what I've read, not all phones cause interference. IIRC, almost all mobile phones in Australia create interference, and every phone I've had in the US does too.

In Perfect Dark's Villa level you have to rescue the head of the Carrington institute and normally, you'd only see where he is, in the cutscene when the level ends, but if you're close the door that leads to the rooms where he's located quickly after opening it, you can squeeze between it and into where the cutscene usually takes place. The area beyond is actually real level geometry with Carrington tied to a chair.

Again in Perfect Dark, in the third level you have to get to the top of a skyscraper to escape a building, but it's actually possible to obtain a key near the top, that will allow you to go to the bottom again and exit out into the streets beyond. You can't go very far before falling through the geometry, but cool nonetheless.

Such an awesome game.

In Halo's outdoor levels when you fire a weapon, smoke will will blow from the riflehead and if you notice it, it follows the wind direction. If it blows to the right when shooting and you do a 180 turn and shoot again, it will blow to the left.

There was a jetski(?) game for the original Xbox that had a sea monster come out and smack your craft if you drove too far out into the water. Scared the shit out of me the first time it happened! Sorry I can't remember the name.

It's not really old (it's current gen) but I always though this was highly amusing in Alpha Protocol:

Quote:
Speaking of orphans, in another weird twisted attempt of moralizing/shocking the player, among its abundant statistics the game keeps track not only of the total number of enemies killed, but also the amount of orphans you've become guilty for during your missions. There are some funny results of stereotyping to examine here: The Arab terrorists all have about half a dozen children, while everywhere else it's almost invariably one or two. And who'd have guessed, childless mercenaries are apparently extremely rare.

Splashdown, one of my favorite extreme sports games

Turn your volume down!

Another Perfect Dark one, shooting all the bottles in the Villa mission will get you ridiculed for being childish IIRC, and if you are close enough to an enemy, joanna will hold her pistol gangsta style. All of the enemies' faces are modeled after members of the development team and in the XBLA version they've been updated to the new members and also include faces like Peter Molyneux. Alien guns 'Eat' their ammo. Alien guns have different sights/aim modes than human ones. With the right preparations, you can have your guns from the previous missions in Air Force One, and you can later keep the Hoverbike from AFO in the next level if you lowered it. You can kill aliens in Multiplayer by landing on their heads. the height level of your character determined the height of the camera in Multiplayer. GOD Perfect Dark is still unrivalled as far as FPS goes imo. It deserves a Proper sequel...

It wasn't a dream ;) I think if you take pot-shots at the water it gets you as well. 'Del lago', the massive mutated croc (I think).

It's not that old, but I would have to say MGS2. Shooting individual bottles; flour pouring out of a sack at the point you shot it; Snake sneezing if you stood outside in the rain too long - little things like that blew my mind back then!

In Rocket Knight Adventure on the Genesis/Mega Drive Sparkster's jetpack will explode turning him black if you leave it charged for too long.

Jurrasic Park on the Genesis/Mega Drive was a terrible game, but it had a number of hidden "moves" you could pull of using the raptor, like tilting his head around or shaking food in your mouth.

Shenmue is definitely my favourite though. I spent so much time picking up and inspecting random objects, opening drawers etc and just walking around the city.

In the freeware game Iji. Okay, in the game the main character has a set of voice clips that will play for when she jumps, attacks, etc. If you kill enough enemies, it starts to effect her personality, and she changes to a second set of voices that sound more pissed off. In one of the levels, she gets mad at her brother during an argument, and switches to the "angry" voice clips for the rest of the level, regardless of how she was before. However, if you press Escape to skip the conversation before she gets angry, her voice clips will not change.

Nethack, for being a game with very few graphics, put lots of attention to detail in the text responses to your actions. So much so it almost becomes a test to see if you can get it to do something illogical.

A simple one is when you kill a creature, it says "You kill the x." but when you kill an undead creature, it instead says "You destroy the x." If your pet kills the creature, it changes to passive voice: "The x is killed."

Corpses taste terrible normally, but if your form changes to a carnivorous animal (such as a jackal) suddenly corpses taste delicious.

If you can't lockpick a door you can use the kick command to kick it down. Try to kick a sink, and it says "Clank!"

If you throw something while you're floating, you move backward (Newton's Third Law.)

And don't get me started on all the ways a cockatrice or a cockatrice corpse can be used.

In Halo it took time for the sound (of an explosion from the rocket launcher) to travel from the point of impact to you if you shot at something distant. And also if you flew a Banshee, Ghost or drove a Warthog on ice and exited the vehicle, it would slide along the ice, scraping the surface, leaving visible trails of cracks. It was one of these things that you noticed at the time (and was greatly impressed by) so when it was cut from the sequels, it definitely made the sequels feel like they were lacking something.

It only happens with GSM (sim card) phones. Additionally, you need to be on a 2G connection to have interference with speakers.

Also concerning GTA IV, the brakes on cars would squeal depending on how hard you pressed the brake button. It was awesome

It's especially amazing considering that there are only a handful of cars that actually have a visible driver. You're also only able to see the animations if you view specific replay angles. So it's something that most people would never even notice but they still took the time to implement it.
