Sorry to take this thread OT but just been playing this for an hour.

For $2.99 it is a very good purchase. The characters are there (unlocking required) and the controls work fine.

You have a punch and kick button, combined with a special and 'assist' buttons which have four areas around the outside. So you can either tap the button, or 'slide' in one of the directions to get a different attack. This lets you do your specials, assists or snap-backs etc without a problem.

The compromise is it feels a little slower in pace, which makes sense given the platform. More along the lines of SF4 speed than crazy marvel. Some people might be put off by this, but if you can get past the fact it isn't a 1:1 port, but something different, it is very fun to play and great value.

The only thing obscured by the touch screen is the meter bars, which could have been up the top (and maybe there is an option...)

Other than that, go grab it if you want a fun diversion.

This, on the other hand, is an abomination in which the low price makes sense. It's a lousy port with severe visual errors and a low framerate.
Soul Calibur wasn't in that state at launch. Arguably, it was worse, as it was 30fps AND lacked multiplayer of any sort. The fact that they were asking $16 (with an introductory price of $12) for a port of a 14 year old fighting game without multiplayer options was hilarious.

On topic: tried a round of MvC2, controls were so nerfed I wasn't able to fire off a single super (got a snapback randomly though) and the round against the first AI opponent ended by time over. Will probably only launch to torture people with the character select music.

Watching the video, you can definitely see the slowdown, even the announcer is slurred because of the slowdown. This is something that can be addressed with a future update though right?

It still looks playable though, so for $2.99 I'm tempted to pick it up and hope it gets patched.

Hard to understand how a recent iOS device fails to run Marvel vs Capcpom 2 at 60 FPS... It has to be a lazy port.

Wait for a $0.99 sale. They're pretty common with Capcom Mobile titles.

I'd say that the hope is that if people stop buying crappy controlling, weakly ported, cash grabs then there will actually be room / incentive in the iOS market for some company / indie developer to actually figure out how to make a fighting work really well on iOS and release that. Might just be the cynic in me though.

Is it worth .99?

Capcom should just permanently reduce it to .99 anyway. They dont need but 1000 or 2000 suckers to buy it to make back their investment

The only good port is the DC version. :( Although I don't remember any more slowdown than in the arcade on the psn/xbl or xbox versions of the game. This game just runs like shit, worse than any other version of the game.

Gotta admit, I'm not liking it too much so far. Went into practice, then a couple rounds of arcade mode when I got it last night, and it's hard as hell to control, for me at least. I'll have to get used to it or something. It does feel noticeably slower than the original and XBLA/PSN releases, but that doesn't really bother me. What does bother me is the placement of the "buttons". Feels like they aren't big enough?.. Or something.

But yeah, like I said.. Hopefully I can get used to it so I can at least enjoy myself, haha.

I was playing on my iPad 2 btw.

I believe the SGX543MP2 is close to a pre-Sandy Bridge Intel HD integrated GPU. Which is several times faster than the Dreamcast GPU.

Which blows my mind why the game runs as poorly as it does. I mean, it's worth 3 bucks as a novelty but it's not playable to me. We're talking 5-10 fps per second.

Seconded.

On the new iPad, the roughness of the sprites are even more evident, and there's some weird filtering with the logo that I don't even comprehend.

The game starts off with everything unlocked, so you'll have to spend time unlocking everyone a la the Dreamcast version. I've played a round or two and the simple controls (four button scheme) didn't sit well with me, so I chose the more advanced controls (six button scheme).

For the most part, my combos came out well but like what many have said, it's really slow. It's definitely not 60fps.

It's just a really lousy, quick port (as evidenced by the severe graphical errors that appear in the backgrounds). It's not that the GPU can't handle it, rather, it's poorly coded.

Keep in mind that the same GPU in the new iPad is used in the PS Vita (though Vita has more CPU cores) and runs Marvel vs Capcom 3 without any issues (a game far beyond the realm of Dreamcast).

I disagree. I don't believe this was a quick port. To me it's obvious there was some hard work and dedication put into this port. Take for example the graphics. They are very well done: sprites look great, backgrounds are actual 3D (not static) and look awesome. The control system, while not to everyone's liking perhaps, is considered and thoughtful.

There's no denying fps is low and the game needs to be optimized. But that is something I believe can be fixed with an update.

If you take a step back and consider you have a potentially faithful reproduction of *marvel vs capcom* on your phone, it's impressive. Let's hope this goes the Soul Calibur route and gets patched up proper in the future.

The fact that the game has so many visual errors suggests otherwise. It would have required MORE effort to port the game over without 3D backgrounds as that would require the creation of new assets.
