And older games are the ones you'll most likely want to mod or do odd things to in order to get working, so being DRM/service independent helps a lot, at least at giving peace of mind that Steam won't suddenly mess with it anyway.

They have the oldest Resident Evil game of them all.

(But no, no actual Resident Evils; no deal with Capcom.)

Lands of Lore is pretty badass. I'm just starting out, but I greatly appreciate the less claustrophobic atmosphere compared to Grimrock. The graphics have a retro charm and the Microsoft Sam voice acting is funny.

Why doesn't my debit/credit card work with GOG. I give all the information it asks, but it still says it's wrong. I've used it with Wii Ware before so it shouldn't be my card. I'd really like to get Crusader: No Regret for that cheap.

you can. with the dosbox remapper. shift-f1 I think it is. you can set any input (keyboard, mouse, joystick) to any other input. it's nice for remapping to a gamepad or wasd.

It's fantastic. And some of the dungeons spook me out for real. Much of the time i'm scared to even open a new door, when you can hear those assholes just standing around swinging their clubs on the other side.

I'm really liking Lands of Lore too! The focus on a storyline is a nice change of pace from Grimrock and it has some great art. I honestly had no idea that Westwood was behind that series.

I almost wish Lands of Lore 1 was in 3D but the look of the second games makes me glad that they didn't bother.

Both Crusader games are good. And since the sequel is more like a full-length expansion pack, it doesn't really matter which one you get.

The nostalgia for Nox is the absolute perfect segway to May 15th. I tried to do a single player D2 run but wasn't feeling it. For some reason Nox just hit the spot.

You don't need to add money to your paypal account directly in order to use that payment method, at least in my experience. If it's tied to a credit card or account, it will come directly from that.

Okay, a rather strange question here - is there any sort of launcher for GOG games out there anywhere, short of adding them all to Steam as non-Steam games? I'd rather have a central place to launch all my games from there than lots of shortcuts everywhere.

Well the easiest way would probably be to add to steam then make a category, but that is finicky sometimes.

You do realize that is what Folders and/or Start menu and/or Pinning Icons to the Taskbar is for though right?

I always wanted to play Nox when it came out, but never did because Diablo II took up all my free time. Snagged that, as well as Magic Carpet. I must own every Bullfrog game on the service. Picked up Dungeon Keeper, Syndicate, and Theme Hospital at release. I miss you so god damn much, Bullfrog.

Where's my Theme Park at?

I bought Magic Carpet due to my nostalgia with the PSX version. But on the PSX, when you release the D-Pad, your character stops turning. Not so with mouse control. You continue to spin in circles until you move the mouse the exact amount it takes to recenter without moving far enough to start turning the opposite direction.

Impossible to play with those controls so I'm not sure how people did it.

Bought both Crusader games, Magic Carpet, and Syndicate. Gog is quickly becoming just as bad as steam for me in just collecting games when they're on sale I'm never going to play :(

There is no specific launcher for the games outside of what Windows already has. You could download them in the downloader, not delete them when they're done d/ling and installing then launch them from there I suppose.

For someone whose mainly been a console gamer and can only generally stand 97-onwards PC games (and some old FPSes) how good is it to grab Crusader? For that matter how friendly is Lands of Lore in contrast to Legend of Grimrock?

Yeah, just stick the shortcuts in a folder. You can then right click on your taskbar and add a new toolbar, then select that folder. It works very nicely like that, I even like that feature's behaviour more than the default quick launch on Windows 7 so I've disabled that and just made another quick launch shortcuts folder to put on the bottom left. You can have sub folders and also have it show or not show the name of the folder and also extend its area a little to like, get a few shortcuts right on the taskbar and then the arrow to click for the rest to show up (I have the custom quick launch set like that mysef), or do whatever you want.

Although I need to clean up the categories a little, and maybe cycle through more of my back ups for games I play. Like, I have Grimrock from gog but it didn't seem to fit with the other oldies while those IE games are from GamersGate (but are the same as the gog versions, and I owned a couple from gog before getting the collection) but yeah, whatever. I would go by genre but my hard drives are small so I don't have much beyond some Steam games and some gog and smaller stuff at any given time.

Expect to die a lot in Crusader. It's just got that older game mentality. The controls take a while to get used to as well, the combination of mouse for aiming and keyboard for moving. But it's fun, with great action and enjoyable death animations, so it makes up for it. The base and chatting with different people between levels is a staple of that era as well. It might not be the easiest thing to enjoy if you're used to a more friendly gaming experience.

Lands of Lore on the other hand, controls basically exactly like Grimrock, and imo, is one of the more casual friendly dungeon crawlers if I'm not mistaken. It helps to have the animated movement between tiles and turning, rather than just the instantaneous jumping like in Eye of the Beholder. You obviously have to be able to tolerate the quarter screen 2D playing area, but you use the keyboard to move just like in Grimrock and click to attack, there's an auto-mapping tool, you get to pick from 1 of 3 classes to start and have NPCs aiding you. The game might drag on a bit at times, but starts out very fun and light as the story unfolds.

Thanks, decided to grab those (along with Nox, but with Diablo as the jumping off point asking about accessibility was pointless). Crusader does seem to have what I feared though, a control scheme that can be a pain to get into now, and likely would've been a pain for me back then given tank controls were what put me off to Resident Evil. Still, I'll give it a serious shot, but I almost wish it were on PSN given it had a PS1 (and Saturn) release, and it doesn't help I can't use the six "Advanced" buttons because my keyboard decided to lay those out different. Lands of Lore seems fine though, I'll just need to figure out how to map buttons to WASD in Dosbox later.

I didn't like the limited control layout at first either, but I eventually got used to them (and stopped using the mouse altogether), so don't give up on then just yet.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I didn't think of a shortcuts folder for some silly reason, that and pinning it to the taskbar as a quick launch shortcut like in Alextended's screenshot seems to be the best way to go!

Noticing the numpad could be used for movement too helped A LOT (and could get me to better embrace Ultima 7 later for that matter), though it'd probably help more if I had standard insert/delete rows rather than this screwy one, that'd be really nice for rolling around and whatnot.

Still too high tbh, but yeah, false :P

Edit: just sorted games by rating, seems these are the lowest.

But yeah they're generally scored very/too highly, every dodgy game has someone, somewhere, feeling nostalgic...

Good list aside from the awful Little Big Adventure and 1-2 others.

Even so, I don't think anyone can say that GOG user reviews aren't massively inflated. And I say that as someone who loves the site and owns far too many GOG games.

Aw. I had irrational hopes that they would keep adding more Legacy of Kain games. I will buy them all, GOG.

$20 for RCT3? Would anyone actually recommend 3 over the first two?
