Rodney King Is 20 Years #1

I just heard on this on the radio.... twenty years since the L.A. riots as a result of the acquittal of the police officers involved in the brutal beating. It occurred on April 29th, 1992.

Edit: Not the beating, but when the officers were acquitted and the L.A. riots began as a result.

Wow, this also makes me feel really old. :(

Actually today is the anniversary of the verdict and the riots. Rodney King was beaten a year or so earlier than that kicked off.

I still can't believe it was already 20 years ago. I remember that day like it was yesterday. It was the scariest memory I have.

Actually, it was April 29th but I made the mistake of saying the date was when he was beaten when it was actually the date the officers were acquitted and the L.A. riots began.

I sometimes wonder if such an event could happen again.
I would love to believe cops will not let such an event happen and crush any protests quickly and early with overwhelming force before it gets out of hand.

That means it was nearly 20 years ago that The Cosby Show ended. I remember that night, with Bill Cosby begging for people to stop rioting and to watch the last episode of his TV show.

I take it none of those Korean shop owners were charged? They were merely protecting what belonged to them? Pretty fucked up to see videos of shop owners patrolling streets shooting randomly at people.

never forget Reginald Denny.

Quote:
On April 29, 1992, at 5:39 PM, Denny loaded his red, 18-wheel truck with 27 tons of sand and began driving to a plant in Inglewood where he said the sand was due. He left the Santa Monica Freeway and took a familiar shortcut across Florence Avenue to get to his destination. His truck had no radio, so he was unaware he was driving into a riot. At 6:46 p.m., after entering the intersection at Normandie, rioters threw rocks at his windows and he heard people shouting for him to stop. Overhead, a news helicopter with reporter Bob Tur aboard captured the events that followed.

Denny stopped in the middle of the street. Antoine Miller opened the truck door, giving others the chance to pull Denny out. Another man, Henry Keith Watson, then held Denny's head down with his foot. Denny was kicked in the abdomen by an unidentifed man. Two other unidentified men who had led a liquor store break-in earlier that day hurled a five-pound piece of medical equipment at Denny's head and hit him three times with a claw hammer. Damian Williams then threw a slab of concrete at Denny's head and knocked him unconscious.

Williams then did a victory dance over Denny. He then flashed gang signs at news helicopters, which were televising the events live, and pointed and laughed at Denny. Anthony Brown then spat on Denny and left with Williams. Several bystanders took pictures of Denny but did not attempt to help him. LAPD officers, despite the fact that they were in the vicinity as the attack took place, could not provide help to Denny.

After the beating, various men threw beer bottles at the unconscious Denny. Gary Williams approached Denny and rifled through his pockets. Lance Parker stopped near Denny and attempted to shoot the fuel tank of Denny's truck but missed.

Bobby Green (a truck driver), Titus Murphy and Terri Barnett (boyfriend and girlfriend), and Lei Yuille (a dietitian), who had been watching the events on TV, came to Denny's aid. Denny eventually regained consciousness and dragged himself back into the cab, driving away from the scene slowly and erratically;.[8] Green, himself a truck driver, boarded Denny's truck and took over at the wheel, driving him to the hospital. At the time that Green took over, Denny was on the brink of losing consciousness again, and suffered a seizure shortly thereafter.

Paramedics who attended to Denny said he came very close to death. His skull was fractured in 91 places and pushed into the brain. His left eye was so badly dislocated that it would have fallen into his sinus cavity had the surgeons not replaced the crushed bone with a piece of plastic. A permanent crater remains in his head despite efforts to correct it. Denny had to undergo years of rehabilitative therapy and his speech and ability to walk were permanently damaged.

I hope not. It was that or get their shit looted and burnt down...and possibly killed too.

If we're thinking of the same video, it's pretty crazy.

Pretty fucked up to see what those "random" people were doing to their property and their families. If someone came to destroy your home or business and the police wouldn't help, what would you do? Some rampaging criminals got shot by their would-be victims and you want charges against the people defending their neighborhoods. Up is down, right is wrong, madness.

The injustice when those officers were found NOT GUILTY was legendary.

It's still hard to accept that a jury of any race could acquit them of wrongdoing when given that video.

It's making me angry right now.

You do know the first 4 seconds of the video were never shown to the public right. Just the jury.

In those 4 seconds king shook officers off and charged at them. Not saying the officers did right, but sadly, few realize how aggressive king initially was.

Also the jury heard from the first witness who was in the ambulance with king, say that king was laughing, cursing and spitting blood on her. This was a active parolee on parole for assault at the time. all this makes for a larger perspective that likely resulted in the officers initial acquittal.

Amazing how many died in the riots, 10 due to officer involved shootings. Sad time for our country.

It doesn't even matter how violent he was in the first four seconds. What matters is that the officers beat the shit out of him for over a minute. Officers should have been charged and its sad that the acquittal led to the riots.
