Anyone here still play their OG Gameboy?

BEHOLD! Handheld gaming's finest creation
![]() I know it wasn't the first portable console, and it's game library pretty much oozed licensed shovelware titles, but I wouldn't be a gamer today if it hadn't bought a GB. I was either fall 1990 or spring 1991... I saved an entire summer's worth of chore money, but dropping it on a GB was worth every penny. I still clearly recall every minute I spent playing Metroid 2 and hand drawing maps on note paper, the first time I cleared Tetris, learning to use the F-word properly whilst getting my butt handed to me constantly on Mega Man and BattleToads. And the money I spent... holy crap, you could build a boat with the accessories and after market goodies sold, every store in the world had something new and cool to bolt onto the GB. and amazingly, other than the rechargeable battery pack that no longer holds a charge, everything still works. I got to thinking of all the hours I logged mashing it's 2 buttons, the miles we traveled together, the swearing and undue smackings it survived... and that's concreted my undying respect for this perfect little piece of technology, and more specifically how long its operated without fail. No game of Tetris will ever, ever get better than the day I first opened the box and booted it up. I love my GB Micro like my own family, the DS was great and the 3DS is a nifty extension of the brand, but even my current crush on the awesome PSP Go doesn't come close to my admiration for the little pea-green wonders the screen brought to me. Any other GAFers still rocking GB like it's 1992? I'm talking the original "brick" Gameboy, Not the GBA, not GBC, just old school GB (and I guess GB pocket), friends. Tell your tales, regale us with your love for the device that literally defined handheld gaming... and enjoy these old school ads:

I've been buying up games for it again, but I tend to play them on a Super GameBoy (using RGB). Beautiful image that gives a perfect 1:1 pixel display of the games with proper colors.
I also use them with a GBA SP+. I do have my OG Gameboy, a Gameboy Pocket and a Gameboy Color, but the screens are so bad at this point that I simply can't stomach any serious playtime with them. I only use them for nostalgia's sake. Same deal with stuff like the Lynx and GameGear. I have them both, but the image quality is just too awful for me these days. Old LCDs are the devil.

Saved up all my tips from my bagging job at Gooding's grocery to buy one. Bought The Amazing Spiderman and another game, but I cannot remember what it was. I dropped it in a pool three weeks after I bought it and never re-bought one. Learned a tough lesson that day: My parents are a couple of unsympathetic fuckwits, and I never brought another handheld by a poll ever again.

Yep. I actually prefer playing Metroid II on the original. It adds to the stark nature of the game.

I still have mine along with 20ish games. Fantastic handheld for its time, used to play it while traveling around the country for swimming competitions. Haven't played it in years and last time I did there was a vertical column of dead pixels on the left edge of the screen.

I can't disagree. Link's Awakening was amazing on Super GB. I was sad to find the Gameboy Player didn't support SGB borders.

Mine died probably more than 10 years ago. Still wish I had it, but that's how it goes. Kinda sucks because if I remember correctly, the Nintendo store in NYC has an OG GameBoy on display that was in a barracks that took mortar fire during Desert Storm and it still runs Tetris.
Anyway, I was really happy when the 3DS ambassador stuff came out. Mario Land 2 and Donkey Kong consumed a good portion of my childhood. Also, the Donkey Kong Country game on GameBoy was a lot of fun, even though it was basically impossible to see anything. |

A year ago there was an OG GameBoy in the box with all the inserts and pamphlets and such at Goodwill for seven bucks. Perfect condition. It is my deepest regret that I did not buy it.
I always play the GB VC games on the 3DS with the lime green color screen. Love it. |

I can't play super gameboy games. I hate the A and B button placement on the SNES controllers. Y and B should have been the buttons used but I guess Nintendo thought Y=B and B=A would be confusing. Same goes for GBA games on the DS etc. At least with the GBA games on the 3DS they let you use X and A. It's not ideal but it's a million times better then using A and B. |

I bought a Pocket for $5 and I leave it in my bag if I plan on leaving the house all day. It's served me well so far. Link's Awakening rocks. The only device I've had that can best that battery life is my Kindle, which is on a different plane of existence.
I had a whale Game Boy back in Pokemon's hey-day, and it broke on me (I think it may have been battery acid, or just a "I'm not going to see you lose against the Elite Four AGAIN") but I got a Color a few weeks later. Life was pretty good. I'm the only one I've ever known who had a whale die.

I regot a green Game Boy Pocket last December(previously sold another green GBP years ago, although my new one has no battery light, which I think is rare? Idk. Didn't know it had no battery light before buying it but don't really care.) and been playing it quite abit. Got 3 games for it, even tho I had plenty of games I wanted new ones. These were Tetris, Solomon's Club, and The Final Fantasy Legend.
Been playing alot of the FFL. Had to restart the game about 6 hours in and play with all Human characters. Now I'm grinding for money before the second dungeon. Haven't played Tetris much since it came out on 3DS VC, but playing Solomon's Club some. Really like it and FFL. I plan on getting more games for my GBP soon. While we are on the subject, can anyone recomend GBP games that will most likely NOT come on 3DS VC? Since I'de rather have it on 3DS VC (because all games on system, backlight, activity log) it would be cool to get good games that have like no chance of coming to 3DS VC for whatever reason. |

My original still works but is packed away in my closet so I wouldn't lose it. No battery cover and still looks messed up from when I peeled one of those gameboy cover stickers off when I was kid. That actually turned me off from putting any type of sticker like cover on any item I owned. Still feel that way today. I do have a yellow gameboy color on my bookshelf though. Still works too. Nintendo build hardware to last.

I still love the OG Gameboy, but I think the last game I played on it was Pokemon Blue in 2001. I am sure it still works as I just need to add some batteries. Been thinking of recently hunting down on ebay Gameboy games I missed to play on the SP. Until I get rechargeable AA batteries I will play the games on SP instead.

The grey bezel around the screen fell out of my Game Boy sometime in the mid 90's. We weren't excessively rough on it as far as I remember, I was just playing it one day laying down and the bezel simply dropped out. It looked like it was simply glued in and it had worn down. We re-glued it and sold it to some poor smuck. I wish I'd just kept it, it was still working just fine otherwise!
