They must've recorded this episode before most of the GameInformer info came out on The Elder Scrolls Online.
You hear the tentative hope on how it won't be a cookie-cutter MMO. Unfortunately, we know this isn't true. I can't wait to hear the deflated reactions on next week's podcast :D Also highly looking forward to Diablo 3 discussion two weeks from now.

Yeah, I don't appreciate this shit either, probably because I feel like I've been begged to fund this game numerous times already. Sure he's their buddy, but what U.S. developer isn't buddies with every member of the games press?

My problem isn't the begging, it's the forum. They are using the respect they are granted due to their position in the industry to beg people into giving their friend money. This is the official podcast of Shack News, doesn't seem right to be pan handling for your buddy on this show.
I mean, we all know that "games journalism" is just another (cheap) wing of the games marketing machine but do you have to be so shameless about it? |

Oh wow, Discovery bought Revision 3?
I don't know if that's Discovery desperate to reach out and create new content for the web or if it's another case of an internet startup breathing a sigh of relief because they were acquired by a bigger company (ala Giantbomb). Either way, good for them! |

It wasn't inoffensive though. People are aware of the game that have listened to the podcast, and seemingly - so far at least - aren't that interested. So they resorted to what sounded like begging to help a friend out. It was tacky.

You know, I've endured some pretty nasty, petty personal attacks here but this one stands right up there.
Ryan, yes, my friend Ryan, is chasing a dream, and a damn big one at that. To try and make it happen he's gone all-in. I don't know the precise details but I get the idea that he's pretty much mortgaged the proverbial farm to get this far. And, frankly, unless some sort of dramatic change happens, it's going to come up short. So yes, I took what, a matter of seconds--I haven't timed it but I bet it's less than a minute total--to remind people that that game he talked about, that sounded pretty cool and definitely ambitious for iOS, was on its last gasp to make its kickstarter and so if you thought it sounded cool but hadn't really done anything, consider doing it now. No one would expect someone who didn't like the idea to buy it. And it is buying it; it's not a blind donation. But, it's probably not going to matter anyway. The project looks destined to be in that majority that don't make their goal. Sometimes I just don't know what to make of these complaints. I wonder if there aren't people out there who would think it was cool if it ran its course, Republique came out, wasn't good, and I wound up talking about how the game's not very good and its flaws. |

You already gave him a lot of spotlight to pimp his game in the podcast where he showed up. I can see why people have issues with the Republique promo at the start of the podcast; it came right out of the left field was awkward to listen to. We get that its floundering but seriously? All 4 podcasters pimping it was hard to listen to
Go look at it. Give them $10. Its only $10 bucks. I kind of agree with eznark. You don't hear weekend confirm giving other KS that much time. I mean, did you try to ask schaefer/fargo to come on during those KS?

I can't recall this much fuss when every single other person that's ever been on the show and had something to plug has done so. There really seems to do a high level of inane, petty bitching in this thread week on week.
Was the plug subtle and unobtrusive? No. Was it designed to be? Probably not. I had looked at the kickstarter previously and knew it wasn't it for me. So I just sat through it, because I have patience, which seems to be lacking in most people these days. Apart from anything else, I understand that the podcast is free. I don't pay anything; I can't imagine anyone else does, either. Why is it that someone providing you with free entertainment is at someone else's behest as to what form that must take, what time is spent on and what they can say during it? Some people make it sound like they don't want to even listen to the show but do it out of the goodness of their hearts each week only to be annoyed by the same things. Depending on the lineup, you can usually get that the same, tired complaints being repeated ad nauseam. It's stuff like this that prevents me from coming into this thread most weeks. |

I was skeptical for a long time, but it just hit $250,000 and has seen a massive spike the past couple of days, unlike any other time during the kickstarter. I think it might just squeak by over the next 6 days if they keep up the current momentum.

The mentality behind complaining about a less than 2 minute-long appeal out of a nearly 2 hour long FREE show is just incomprehensible to me.
It's Garnett's show! If he wants to take a couple of minutes to help out a friend, more power to him. More games = more choice. There is no downside to this. |

I don't really have a problem with it except it was a little weird having the other guys chime in, felt like I was getting 'the hard sell.' Which is especially weird as I've already pledged $10 or $15 to the project.
Just as a piece of constructive criticism I think it may have been more appropriate to mention as a finishing move or something rather than the show leader. All seriousness aside this new guy Schramm is pretty good, I enjoyed his 2N1T trolling. |

And you probably knew that when you made the plea, just like you should have known there'd be some mild bitching. You know the press is too close to the industry, and this plea to save the iOS game that nobody wants just highlights that again, as did the awkward conversation about your girlfriends game last week. It looks like you're already downplaying it's failure. If it succeeds it's proof that AAA big budget games belong on iOS, if it fails, well, Kickstarter is a silly crapshoot anyways, and it doesn't mean anything at all. |

I don't see a problem with Garnett helping out a friend. I do think the messaging was a bit odd though. It felt like I was browsing one of those infomercials at 1:30am.
"With your 10 dollars you can help save ios gaming. Please donate today!" As a note, I already backed this kickstarter awhile ago when the PC version got announced. I didn't do it for the silly notion of a AAA game. What defines a AAA game, anyway? Only the amount of money put towards it? I chipped in 20 bucks so I can play the game on PC and my brand spanking new ipad. As long as the kickstarter goes through, of course. If it doesn't, Ryan should probably try again. So many stagnate days might be too much to overcome. If everything announced had been there from the beginning I think it makes the 500k goal.

It's clear that games writers are ok being relegated to unpaid marketing mouthpieces, I guess the next natural step is to use them as capital acquisition hucksters. With the amount of industry friends you have and the massive surge in creatives turning to crowd sourcing though, you might want to actually stop and think if you're really cool with using your show and position as a fundraising platform for unproven projects. Like I said, your show, but at some point I imagine it becomes an issue beyond personal tastes. To me it starts to feel unethical when you use your position at ShackNews to pick pet projects and try to get your fans to give said projects cash. You are also putting yourself out there. Republique seems to be heaping on the promises but they're still asking for the same amount of money. Time/quality/service...one of those will suffer and you're now on the line as a vocal fundraiser for the project. I wouldn't want to be in that position.

Christ EZ, could you be more denigrating?
"unpaid marketing mouthpieces" I've always maintained that this isn't journalism but rather enthusiast media. And, years and years of my stuff forms the record of my independent take on games. We cover all manner of games, and one of the things I think is cool is when we can help a game that does not have a big publisher and massive marketing budget find its audience. Someone mentioned Schafer and Fargo. Those studios have a following; they have franchises. As a result, those fanbases kicked into action and funded games they'd been praying for for years in the blink of an eye. There's definitely some growing things we're seeing in Kickstarters, and then some specific things related to Repubique. As to that, if/when it doesn't have enough people willing to purchase, that does say something about whether core gamers really want that experience on the iOS platform. Anyway, this is completely trashing my weekend so I'm going to try and step away for a bit. |

The 360 version is fine; it's what I played. Of course it's not going to look as good as it does on the PC but then again what does? I still think its easily one of the most visually appealing 360 games out there. There are some frame rate issues at some points in the game but I don't think it's a deal breaker by any means.

But really, Jeff raves about Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 is on the way. It's now or never!
Besides the plug at the beginning of this show, which I didn't even really notice, WC definitely is hitting a good groove over the past month or so. Every show recently has been really good, after a bit of an odd down period.

It certainly became "something", -- I don't love it, but I find myself listening to every episode religiously. You don't stop watching a soap opera just because every other episode is a secret clip show, after all.
