Actually, with all the talk about Resident Evil 4 having a ridiculous amount of content, great pacing, constant introductions of new enemies and new stages, as well as a decently paced (if silly) story, I am reminded of a new shooter that just came out: Kid Icarus Uprising.

The best campaign EVER excluding RPG's: U2
Great FPS campaigns of this generation: KZ2, HL2, COD4, World at War, Black Ops.

The rest are mediocre at best for me. Halo's got the ridiculous concept of bright colors and religious aliens, MW2/3 have this ridiculous notion of Soviets actually being able to invade the US without all of them being shot down before they're even a threat, and takes it seriously, Crysis is plain boring, and lol at the SP campaign of any game whose name starts with Battlefield.

Half Life 2 (and its episodes) and Resident Evil 4 had phenomenal campaigns. I'd be much, much more interested in shooters if more of them had that level of craftsmanship in them. With the exception of the handful of vehicle sequences in Half Life 2, the pacing in those games was perfect; individual sections never overstayed their welcome, and tougher stretches gave way to crucial breaks (I can't think of many things more soothing than RE4's save/shop rooms).

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, while not on the same level, was also pretty fun to play through. The sniper level in particular was engrossing.

Edit: Yet another thread that's making me want to try out Bulletstorm. I'll look out for another Steam sale or something.

Rage coop levels are some of the best I have played. The levels are not as open as doom and quake but they allow a lot of options in how the well placed enemies are fought. The single player campaign is great as well but the coop levels are top tier.

I'm interested in trying Hard Reset now.
I thought hard reset was good but not great. the weapon selection is very good but there are only a few enemies types, the level design is locked in the arena style(serious sam, painkiller) and there is no fancy movement. I think a lot of the players time is spend playing matador with the charging ape enemies or +back while damaging a horde of small robots. Now with that in mind the game has a lot of varieties of "exploding barrels" that can make going through areas quickly a good challenge.

I'm not going to say that Killzone 3 was the best campaign FPS, but you gotta admit that the game was very fun because of the gunplay, melee mechanics, and the weaponry (WASP was crazy and the weapon you get in at the end of the game is just ridiculous).

Playing this split screen with a friend on a hard mode was a lot of fun.

I haven't played Bioshock, but I'm assuming that was great one too. Obviously all the HL2 games are at the top

Not counting space/flight sims, shmups, rail and other classic arcade shooters: Half-Life, Half-Life 2, Operative: No One Lives Forever, MDK, EDF2, Doom 2 and Deus Ex, if you consider it a shooter.

Slightly below that: Halo, Halo 2, F.E.A.R., The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay (again, not really a shooter), Armed and Dangerous, Terminator: Future Shock + Skynet, Serious Sam: The First Encounter, Serious Sam: The Second Encounter.

I really didn't enjoy Singularity but I LOVED playing through Wolfenstein in 2011 (LTTP). Something about the latter felt less stilted and fun. Really good/fast FPS gameplay.

RAGE got boring. Loved all the aesthetics but the game just felt kind of... Static? I really wanted to like it.

Very much like Crysis and Bioshock the first 2/3rds are great, and the last third is complete and total shit. There's this awesome moment at the end of what's essentially the second act that could have wrapped up the game, but instead it limps along for hours more for no reason, and no real fun.

I loved the ending segments to bulletstorm, with the crazy weather that killed people as you knocked them out, the whole scenario where you worked along with that asshole, etc. I didn't like how they finished him with a QTE, but the actual campaign was one of my favorites in recent memory.

Binary Domain is also FANTASTIC. I was really surprised at it, but it's probably my favorite TPS campaign this gen.

I really liked vanquish, the enemy and gameplay designs were really balanced for the most part, but having variety would be nice, and they took too much of those "corridor" section from other games they researched on and so some parts could've been better (uphill with infinite spawns, maps with little to no room to breath because of how small it is).

Though saying it's my favorite tps isn't really saying much because I barely enjoy tps outside of uncharted games, but I liked the pacing more in Vanquish and how it focuses on action first, in general I don't usually like tps due to how slow they are.

For fps I only enjoyed Halo 3 this generation, due to the openness of the maps

I think this is a really silly criticism. A susceptibility to religious thought would be inherent in any organism that evolved in a similar way to humanity (and this is obviously the case for the species that make up the covenant). It doesn't matter how advanced our understanding of the universe becomes, religion will always play some role, it will always have a hold over people because of the promise of eternal life, and interstellar travel wouldn't change that.

And the "religion" of the covenant isn't really a religion in the same way as modern-day abrahamic religions anyway. They worship the forerunners, that did exist, and did possess power and technology beyond their understanding, with the relics they left behind being evidence of this. The covenant misinterpret the "great journey" as referring to eternal life, but from their perspective it would be rational to assume that if any race was capable of living forever, it would be the forerunner.

I can't believe religious aliens are too much for you to suspend your disbelief, but you can enjoy Uncharted 2 despite Nathan Drake's numerous death-defying strokes of luck.

GoldenEye 007 (N64) remains my all-time favourite shooter (and game generally). Yes, I know the signposting is archaically awful, the frame-rate criminal and you can plough through it in about four hours from start to finish, but it's so rich with possibilities in terms of how you can play that it's almost a shame the multiplayer was such a revelation as to completely overshadow it.

At heart it's an action shooter, but the stealth system is wonderfully dynamic: you can proceed slowly and precisely, or raise hell and open up all sorts of shortcuts by attracting guards through locked doors, a key strategy for unlocking cheats. Certain levels also play the system against you, like Bunker II forcing you to play stealthily but only giving you loud guns until the very end, meaning you either have to take single shots, making each encounter very tense, or resort to throwing knives and slappers only, nigh on impossible. The semi-linearity of many of the environments put player decision making at the fore, and the variety of objectives (even if, again, they're horribly vague by today's standards) force exploration.

For the linear, action-based levels, there's nearly always a fresh twist - the Dam seamlessly introducing the game's core mechanics; the Silo's tight countdown; the Frigate's hostage situation; the Jungle and Cradle's boss encounters - to give each a distinct identity, making them all highly replayable on their own, ridiculously so when experimenting with the myriad cheat and weapon combinations (dual RCPs was a highlight of my growing up). The small size of each level meant starting from the beginning after death was just enough of a hassle for each run to be packed with tension - something checkpoints have killed off - but not quite enough to make you want to give up immediately rather than trying again.

Once the game was fully completed, 007 Mode was unlocked, allowing you to mess around with enemy health, accuracy, damage and reaction times, giving even more customisation options, and much more significant ones than today's 'now your character can wear a green hat!' choices. It's a real shame fewer games didn't follow the innovations it set out, with even (the inventive but flawed) Perfect Dark heading more in the direction of modern shooters. Having enemies react to where you shot them with specific animations - especially the highly rewarding but elusive groin shot, or the old 'shoot their hats off' routine - only made it more fun to keep coming back to, let alone the entertainment value of sending scientists to their increasingly inventive deaths (I like how Rare even allowed players to kill three of them before failing the mission).

It also did Bond better than any other game to date, ignoring the lazy clichés that mired the subsequent EA games ('Bond Moments', and so forth) and blandness of the Activision ones, instead delivering pitch-perfect homages to the series through the mission briefings - nailing the 'voices' and humour of M, Q and Moneypenny ('Grabbed by the Spetsnaz, James? Sounds painful!') - and bonus missions like Aztec (recreating the final act of Moonraker) and Egyptian (combining Live & Let Die with Man With The Golden Gun - Rare certainly loved Roger Moore). As a Bond nerd, it was perfect. As a player, the range of playing styles are of a diversity rarely seen outside the Deus Ex / Thief series, and the cheats, objectives and awesome weapons make it far easier to return to for a quick blast than any other, even fifteen years after its original release. And for the record, I love the blocky graphics, they remind me of Soviet-era artwork for some reason.

(Wow, this was long)

Have your reasons, but just know that this is actually explained in the fiction, although like most of Halo it isn't explained in game. The Covenant have a broken religion based upon Forerunner artifacts that were responsible for turning them into that interstellar society, without a full understanding of the nature of that technology or its original purposes. Remember that even the Covenant didn't know the true purpose of the Halos.

Just an FYI really. Not trying to change your mind.

Ehh. It offered interesting ways to interact with the game's environment and physics. It also had a good story and cast to go along with it. And I will definitely agree that Half-Life 1 blows it out of the water in both SP and MP.

I disagree, once you can travel among stars, you've got to be able to look at things differently and I doubt religion will play much of a role. Even if the covenant religion is different than what we traditionally think of religion, I was still bothered by using traditional religious terms to describe them.

I'm fine with religion when a game takes place in the time period like AC, but a sci-fi has no room for religion in it. I just really don't like religion or religious terms in my video games unless it's there for authenticity.
