I'm pretty sure the iphone resolution is 3:2, not 16:9, not sure about other phones but I suggest just googling them and seeing what you need.

Does anyone know the policy on advertising an Indy Game (through an OT) on GAF?
...if there is one?

It used to be ok, however I'm pretty sure it's frowned upon now.

No warrenty for this, but from what I read so far:

If you are the dev of said game, you're not allowed to advertise your game that way. However people are free to make a OT about your game. Obviously you do good not to persuade people to create OTs for you, your PMs might be read too so don't try it that way either.

Otherwise so far it seems posting about the development of your game here, and possibly even say that its out now seems to be fine (until now).

I guess I'll play it safe and not go through GAF, for now.

Drop a line in here still, just don't make an OT just about advertising the game and nothing else.

I'm actually considering starting a thread asking how various GAF devs go about advertising their work. Would that be helpful?

Loving this thread.

Is there a good site or sites dedicated to indie gaming for developers?

Alright GAF, this is super early but what the hell. Showed it at the local Montreal Indie meet up in action; may get some vids up at a later date once I figure that out but mostly focused on making shit work(tm).

That's awesome.

So, Indie Gaf (does it bother anyone that the thread is called "indy" and not "indie"?). TOJam is coming up this weekend, and I'm thinking of just randomly jamming a second game in. And I might as well open-source this idea: The theme of the jam is "The world is NOT ending".

So, I was toying with a meta idea of "you are a solo team at a game jam, and you've got half an hour deadline, and you still don't have a game, and even though people are telling you that it's not the end of the world, you're still trying slap a game together".

I still can't figure out what kind of idea or a game that is, but I figured I'd toss it out here...

new video of leveling!

First test of leveling up:

Each level has randomly selected enemy type, collect ten of them and the level clears out and the next level is initialized. Every level is harder than the last, difficulty rises until player fails. (best strategy is to avoid killing the selected enemy type as long as possible)

I tried out different ways to visualize the selected enemy type/ships left till next level, kinda failed :) At the moment the center is way too busy. Oh well, at least things work.

I would keep the selected enemy type/ships as a simple row of icons along the left. A 2D wire frame for the ship would fit with your art direction and just have them fade away when one is taken out.
I would put it on the left or right, and remove them from the bottom each time one is destroyed, resulting in the other target ships above them to fall down into it's place.

You should also give a bonus of some kind for destroying your target. Give the player that cookie for completing a goal. Like a Bounty reward of sorts.

Keep up the awesome work, I hope this game does incredibly well!

I decided to bite the bullet and join the fun. I started a project on Monday that I want to eventually release as a free game.

It's an RPG inspired by my favorite RPG series: Paper Mario.

Paper Knight's Story

by In-Qu Games

Technical Stuff:
-Engine: RPG Maker XP (Yea, crutches!)
-Ruby Programming Language
-Mode 7 Script by MGC

We don't want to completely ape paper Mario, but just as many look to WoW as an MMORPG to base their MMORGP off, or Doom as an FPS, we're making this game pretending that Paper Mario is the default RPG. That being said, we do want to make PKS distinguishable in it's own right.

Here are rough alpha screenshots of what we have so far: (feel free to laugh at the bear)

Eventually their will be a HUD, and and I'm thinking of implementing something more dynamic than just a list of commands in battle.

What makes PKS different from other RPGs?
We want PKS to be simple and engaging. Simple through the use of low damage values and stats, clean aesthetics, and low use of "number management." Engaging through the player actively participating in battle with button presses/combinations, Zelda-inspired dungeons, and a cheeky story.

I'll continue to post updates if there is interest; feel free to comment!

Haha, thanks. We do plan on making this more than just another RM game, and will change up a lot of things from mechanics to menus.

Is there a particular reason you're using RMXP as an Engine for your project?
Seeing how you're not even utilizing its Battle System, why not just use a Ruby Game API and go with that?
I'm asking because I see quite some potential but I don't think you can just put an RMXP game on Steam. :/

Basically, it's what I'm familiar with and my knowledge of programming is rather patchy since I only learn/know things that I try to use. For example, I've been able to program DQM's breeding system and a PW case maker, but I had to google what "API" meant.

What other stuff could I use to make games? Or, at the very least, mess around with? I just discovered Unity, so I'm going to mess around with that for a bit. I seem to recall another one that was mentioned on GAF, but can't remember the name of it for the life of me. It seemed to have a Flash look to it.

I'll look into coding eventually... anyone have any good sites they'd like to recommend?

^Unity (C#, JS, Boo) or Construct2 (HTML5) are what I usually see people recommending around here in terms of engines.

Ship leaves nice green slime/northern lights type of thing behind as it moves
More particles!
New Alarm system that tells how much damage a sector has taken. Skull for critical damage.
Loads of stuff under the hood.

Would that be Skövde University by any chance? I heard Nintendo is coming here, but my company isn't part of the Gotha Science Park so I won't get to meet them. Maybe I should sneak in and do some stealth pitching.

You can randomly generate them and then export as a wav format.

Also, I'll be posting concept images of my game pretty soon. Look forward to that!

Made about 12 sounds for my game. Thanks for the link!

Here's an update:

After some feedback, I reworked some of the graphics in the game. Less gradients, more solid colors.

Bfxr is an elaboration of the glorious Sfxr, the program of choice for many people looking to make sound effects for computer games. You're free to use the sounds in whatever form you want, in noncommercial or commercial projects.

I played around with the thing yesterday, scored few interesting sounding effects. nice!

Thanks. At this point I can still change the art style because I don't have that many assets. On one had, I'd like to get somethings set in stone and work for there, but on the other I'm pretty open to ideas and criticism. I'm more comfortable using digital coloring/drawing than going through the process of scanning and digitizing the assets so that may limit me a bit.

Here's every art asset i have except for character sprites and menu overlays in one gif:

Oh wow, thanks for your generosity! You're right; it'll be freeware for the PC.

I have no problems making you an NPC, ignore the reward requirements. Just consider it a Gaf Gold privelage reward. I'm making a note in my game documents to ask you the details about your NPC design and name (I'm assumig "Andrex") if the project gets funded but I could go ahead and make him now if you have an inkling of what he should look like. Again, thanks for the support!

EDIT: I'd be fine with putting in a Paper Barry.
