Yes, it is wonderfully bleak compared to 400 Blows. Also of note would be the Bill Douglas trilogy, which I didn't personally like more than 400 Blows, but found overall better as the same sort of continuous character experiment as the complete Antoine Doinel saga.

Bill Douglas is far more consistent and true to his first film, where Truffaut shifted tone to the more silly side as the series went on. Bill Douglas also has more of the bleak atmosphere seen in l'enfance nue.

What I gots so far:

A Better Tomorrow
A Better Tomorrow II
The Killer
Hard Boiled
Full Contact
Are you specifically interested in Woo? Because Full Contact was Ringo Lam only. Bullet in the Head is really the only HK Woo of note not on your list, and I cannot recommend Once a Thief at all. If you don't care about who directs, another great from Lam would be City on Fire.

i don't think it's bleak compared 400 blows, there's something more awful and hidden about the world in 400 blows and something more honest. francois doesn't have nearly the depth of antoine - but there is something remarkable about the the way pialat keeps a documentary style distance between the characters, yet still have some really wonderful subjective camera movements. the wedding party scene is incredible for that reason.

i didn't really car for my childhood, it kinda moves into the british isles realism, that outside of sporting life i don't have any need for.

Shame (2011).

Holy fucking shit did Fassbender get Oscar robbed. Wonderful movie. I haven't seen a film exploring modern loneliness and depression with such insanely piercing effectiveness before. The sheer talent involved in this movie bleed together so well.

The Sitter was for me worse than Jack and Jill. Seriously. This is the turd highlight of the year, because the movie was crammed so full of progressive retardation that when I finished watching it, I wanted to punch a kitten to death. What a complete waste of money and my time.

I feel bad for Sam Rockwell being in that movie.

I don't know, I at least found the delivery of Francois' story to be much more harsh and stomach-churning. Truffaut offered an underlying charm that, despite the situation, made the whole thing easier to watch. I connected more with Antoine, without a doubt, but I ultimately felt hope for him that he could handle it, and he did. Francois on the other hand struck me as more of a time-bomb waiting to pop.

My Childhood seems rather taste-tailored for a variety of reasons, and I cannot argue the greatness of This Sporting Life. I have a similar disillusionment with a lot of the Czech New Wave.

I can't believe Borgnine didn't find Some Like It Hot more funny or at least have realized how clever the plot and denouement are in regards to providing a most liberal, third-wave feminist view of gender and its fluidity.

Oh well you know I mean that was definitely in my mind the entire time, but I was mostly looking at the tits.

It was fun I just didn't laugh very much, if it all. It was mostly built around "how are they going to get out of this one!" Or you could see everything coming a mile away, like the big joke at the end. Also when you said "gender and its fluidity" I know that you're really referring to Marilyn's butt. See, now that's funny.

Film Diary April 19th 2012 to April 19th 2013
April 19th:
001 Make Way for Tomorrow - **** 1/2
April 20th:
002 Brewster McCloud - ****
003 Goodfellas - ****
April 21st:
004 The Great Silence - *** 1/2
April 22nd:
005 Martha Marcy May Marlene - ***
April 24th:
006 House of Pleasures - * 1/2
007 Caliber 9 - ****
April 25th
008 Brief Encounter - ****
009 Letter Never Sent - ***
April 26th
010 The Italian Connection - **** 1/2
April 27
011 Cabin in the Woods - ** 1/2
May1st
012 Kuroneko - *** 1/2
May 2nd
013 Lola - *** 1/2
014 I Hate But Love - ** 1/2
015 The Music Room - ***
016 Linda Linda Linda - ****
May 3rd
017 Southern Comfort - **
May 4th:
018 The Avengers - ***
May 5th:
019 And God Created Women - ****
May 6th
020 Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards! - ****

Other notables not in my current diary since I fucked up the tail end of my last one: Wereckmeister Harmonies - **** 1/2, Daddy Long Legs - ****, Coca Cola Kid - *** 1/2, The Kid with a Bike - ***, Tyranosaur - **, and also my three favorite things from SXSW: The Comedy - ****, Girl Walk - **** 1/2, & VHS *** 1/2.

Biggest surprises: Di Leo crime set so far has been amazing and my girlfriend and I are now massive fans of Mario Adorf and would dream of having a B-crime movie that would pair him and Jo Shishido in some mystery universe. We joke about getting him tattooed on us and is the reason we watched Lola out of that Fassbender trilogy out of order. Linda Linda Linda was picked on a whim from the lady and I loved the way the film was set up to have them not have to overcome typical cliche issues and was instead just a nice love letter about the joys of youth. And God Created Women was way funnier than I remembered it being, Detective Bureau 2-3 is another great crime romp in the canon of Suzuki, Make Way for Tomorrow could be better than Tokyo Story but then again, Tokyo Story didn't have some of the old Hollywood stereotype characters that are a bit jarring but the ending is incredibly sweet and heartbreaking, Daddy Long Legs is another great film in the line of the New York mumblecore and shows that when used properly, what mumblecore could do to bring realism to characters that otherwise wouldn't have a spotlight on, Wereckmeister Harmonies is a powerful horror film but who doesn't know that at this point, The Kid with a Bike would have been better if it ended earlier, Girl Walk is pure happiness for 72 minutes and will sadly, never be properly released due to its insane music rights, The Comedy is the funniest mean spirited film of the year and made me do a 180 on Tim and Eric after their atrocious Billion Dollar Movie, VHS is a nice set of found footage films with some better than others obviously but all of them have many interesting takes on the genre, Brewster McCloud would have been my favorite Altman film if they kept the madness going strong the entire time and reminds of what a 70s American Makahajev film would have looked like, the Coca-Cola Kid is a strange wonderful delight that is set up like a off tuned romcom but is more than that, Goodfellas while not being the most professionally crafted film of Marty's career with errors galore and a fumbling third act is worth the dude bro IMDB hype for the most part, and etc and etc I am tired of writing shit now.

5. Over Your Cities Grass Will Grow

Today will probably go see Sound of my Voice and Damsels in Distress because why not, right?

Dana and I are reluctant to start the last 2 films of the Di Leo set only because Mario Adorf isn't in it but will probably plow through them this weekend. Looking forward to the 2nd set already.

Also, good news for Fernando Di Leo fans: Raro is releasing a second Di Leo Blu-ray set featuring Shoot First Die Later, Killer Vs. Killer, and Kidnap Syndicate. The bad news is that we have to wait until December for the set to hit. Damn!

Also on the poliziotteschi front is a Blue Underground re-issue, Midnight Movies Vol. 3: Action Triple Feature, with three Enzo Castellari flicks: The Big Racket, Street Law, and Heroin Busters. I doubt these will be up to the level of the Di Leo set, but they look like a fun way to pass the time.

AU, I only recently learned about Detective Bureau 2-3: Go to Hell Bastards!, but I would have wanted to see it based on the name alone. Then I learned that it's a Suzuki flick starring Jo Shishido and, yeah, it's now near the top of my to-watch list.

3. John Carter ***

Avengers was shit. No tension and boring. Never was there a sense of them losing. Even Bay manages to make the Transformers feel like they could bite it at any given time. It's biggest problem was the uselessness of some of the characters. Capt being the most useless of them all. The humor was over done and I swear humor is the only way Whedon can finish a scene.

It wasn't the most memorable Suzuki/Shishido team-up for me, but they are all worth watching. I do love the bit where Jo sings on stage.

Well, I'll bite. I thought Avengers was a helluva lot of fun and that Joss Whedon's approach was basically perfect. When you're dealing with major franchise characters whose own films generate millions of dollars (and where ongoing film installments have already been announced) you can't really kill folks off left and right. Instead, the pleasure of the film is in seeing how the characters interact and how they work together as a team to defeat the bad guy of the week. Captain America may not have been able to take down big threats like, say, Thor, but he did his fair share of the work and I enjoyed seeing him in action, chucking his mighty shield around and tag-teaming mooks with Black Widow. On the other end of the spectrum you have the Hulk, who was written as a force of nature with plenty of sight gags thrown in. The audience I was with - a Sunday afternoon matinee crowd, so we're not really talking the hardcore Friday midnight audience here - broke into cheers during the Hulk's big moments, and I was right there with 'em.

Hiring Whedon, a guy who knows how to make an ensemble cast work, was the best thing Marvel could have done in this case. Whedon's trademark non-stop banter may not have been particularly in character for anyone other than Iron man, but I thought it was a lot of fun. Can you take this all very seriously? No, not really, but you can have a good time with a film like The Avengers. It's bright, shiny, colorful fun and I enjoyed the hell out of the flick. Sorry you didn't feel the same.

Well, I know the Criterion channel has a lot of Janus properties that they haven't yet published or announced under the Criterion label. Anything you may have seen from HVE is also from Janus, and that explains the Zatoichi films being on their channel.

Alien for pretty much the same reasons you like it.

That cracked article from last month about 6 Common Movie Arguments That Are Always Wrong

Is pretty funny and kind of true.

Armond's piece on Celine and Julie Go Boating makes this really interesting distinction between the dichotomy between fanboy type bloggers and the intellectual types. He obviously despises the latter more than the former, if only because the fanboys don't care about what Armond is selling. They've likely not heard of Jacques Rivette or his movies.

Just to participate:

01. V/H/S
02. The Raid: Redemption
03. The Kid with a Bike
04. The Do-Deca Pentathlon
05. Bernie
06. [REC]3: Genesis
07. Compliance
08. Shut Up and Play the Hits
09. John Carter
10. Damsels in Distress

I noticed Everything Goes Wrong showed up on Hulu semi-recently, which had no previous release that I know of. It was excellent, and I hope Janus has plans for it.
Another bit I loved was when he slapped her back. When he started to sing was pretty out there and unexpected. I have yet to see a bad Suzuki film. I am going to start watching his later films within the month.

The main reason to have Hulu plus. Does anyone have a Mubi subscription?

I haven't been in front of a computer in forever it feels like other than to fuck around on Spotify. Been getting emails from my dad asking me if I am still alive. I should message him back.

Next on the list of things I rented are The Third Man, Amateur, The Celebration, A Woman Under the Influence, Nightwatching, & 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her.
