LTTP: Suikoden 2
#1
Hey guys, this is my first OT so bear with me. I am a huge fan of the series and played the first about 7 times. I keep hearing from previous threads that this game surpasses that of the first which I would find hard to believe because of how excellent it was. I am just about to start the 2nd and am very excited. =)

Oh, it definitely will. :)
I play GS1 and GS2 almost annually because both games are very precious to me (easier now with the PSP collection). I get so envious of people who get to play it for the first time!

God, I love Suikoden 2. In fact, it was the one game that I got scary addicted to, and didn't leave my dorm room for like a week while I played it.
Especially being able to recruit McDohl, so good. Moreso because he's a total badass, the Soul Eater is one of the best runes, and his unite attack with the hero is one of the best. |

But it's nice to know that someone's likely finally working on the PSP collection. The dialogue in both games is much better in Japanese, especially for GS2. There are only so many exclamation points, untranslated phrases, and ellipses I can take. :/

Just some posts on RHDN, I don't know where they are now. I wouldn't get your hopes up for something anytime soon, either way.
I'd personally love to do a retranslation of Suikoden 2 if someone would do the hacking for me, since that's pretty out of my area. |

2 and 3 are my favourites with 1 close up there as well. Brilliant series for the most part.

I wish I knew how to hack or do fantranslation stuff, but that's really out of my territory. :/
Anyway, you know what I love about this game? The character sprites and animations. They're so well-done, and very expressive.
His stats! I love him because of his stats. :3 I love playing around with any runes that he can use. He's just a damn powerhouse, and he's much better than Riou at level 99, as you can see explained in this old post of mine. Yes. But sometimes I get the itch to play them in English so I play either the PSN version of GS1 or the disc version of GS2. Those were the first versions I played, so I'm a little fond of them. Plus the only way to play the Suikogaiden games (which provide some background for GS2 and GS3) are with the PS1 discs, so I do have to play those in Japanese. The novels are pretty cool. Manga's okay. The artbooks are amazing, but that's because Fumi Ishikawa's fantastic.

I've managed to do some on my own. Like, I translated all of the books in all of the released Kiseki games except Ao and actually got them inserted back into the game no problem. But when it comes to hacking something like a PSX game, I'm clueless.

![]() http://romhack.org/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=3585#p95093 That's from the PSP version. What's nice about it is that it's a true widescreen conversion (no stretching!) and you can walk diagonally in both games. I heard it's actually based on the PC versions of Suikoden I and II, but I'm not sure if that's true or not. http://www.romhacking.net/forum/inde...,10159.60.html Someone has picked up the English translation of this, and his last update was on April 10, 2012. So, keep your fingers crossed! |

Probably one of the best JRPGs I've played. Don't forget to play the sidequests, they're the best. Also do get all 108 characters. IIRC, they're not much nor are that hard to miss except for Clive and Ayda. My only nitpick about this is the translation.
And yeah, Suikoden was technically my 2nd JRPG on the PSone (first was Beyond the Beyond). Edit: oh, no wonder Golden Sun is quite similar to Beyond the Beyond in terms of battles. They're both by Camelot. Learned something new.

Just getting to see the Soul Eater rune again is awesome enough. McDohl being awesome is just extra good :x

I didn't appreciate Suikoden 2 the first time through, i remember liking it but i don't recall thinking that much of it. I loved the first and have played through atleast 10 times. Had a US import version of both games.
I played through again recently on ripped version from the Go, spent ages trying to get the save to import correctly. Absolutely fantastic game. Even while basic in many areas it's probably one of the best RPGs out there. The only part to me that's abit of a missed opportunity, and an issue with every game of the series. There's no 'late game'. Recruiting is it. Once you have your 108 person army there's never any decent sidequests to actually do with them. Shame it's a dead series, 3 and 5 were still good enough to keep things going. |

Rune sequences and Unite attacks are much faster than the original PSX version. Genso Suikoden's opening movie is from the Saturn version. It's much better than the crappy PSX one. Also, a really nice addition, imo, is that during strategic war portions, the music can change depending on how well you're faring in battle. It was reminiscent of GS1. But thank goodness they didn't use the same models as the PC version. I know Akselziys posted the PC models in the last LTTP thread. Edit: here.

one of the best RPGs in video game history. enjoy every minute of it.
same here. i remember buying Suiko 1 blindly and exchanging recruiting tips with the store owner. he told me how to recruit crowley. scratch that, he actually showed me how in his store, because i couldn't find him on my own. |

I really envy you. I had almost unrealistic expectations cause of all the praise when I played it for the first time a few years ago (my backlog is ridiculous) and it managed to not only meet but surpass them.
I still get teary eyed when I think about the awesome scene when Jowy returns I had one MAJOR gripe though: You have almost no shot at saving your baby sis without a guide, I really hate shit like that. |
