The fade..parts in games that discourage a second playthrough.
#1
Outside of known masochists , I don't know anyone who gets excited when i mention "The Fade". In hindsight, the fade in Dragon age Origins wasn't unbearably horrible, but it was long and tedious in too many spots..so much so that i scrapped a second playthrough because i knew i had to go through it again but didn't feel like it..
What are some examples of "The Fade" in an overall good game that killed your desire to play through it again?

I don't know what The Fade is, but the whole "starting out weak, growing strong" idea of a second playthrough doesn't appeal me. If a character is consistent within a game (only gaining a temp powerup here or there) I can easily replay the game if I like it well enough. If i play a game, I "level up" or "grow stronger", which will make the game more fun, more experienced, you're in the flow... I can't play it a second time most of the time. I can't deal with the whole "I was just strong, in the flow, if I were to start at the beginning for whatever reason, I have to start from scratch".

I wouldn't say it would single handedly impede wanting to replay it, but the side scrolling 2D sections of Shadows of the Damned are terrible. It plays like a shitty Flash game and you have to do it three times. The fact the game has no skippable cutscenes at all is more of a pain for replays though.
Oh god, I haven't touched ME3 and I want to get another run going in on ME2 because my first was a bit sloppy and I haven't touched the DLC, but the mining is the worst. Orders of magnitude more bad than the Mako (which was actually pretty relaxing to stroll around in). |

I think I put off replaying Xenogears for years primarily because I didn't want to go through platforming at the bottom of Babel Tower again.
I finally did replay it when my wife wanted to try the game, and then -- after giving it several tries -- she had me play through that part for her. Amazing how one tiny part of a game can sour the whole experience. |

Metroid Prime 3 - Mogenar, the boss of the first planet, and my least favorite boss in the entire Metroid series. It's not fun at all.
Batman: Arkham Asylum - Killer Croc. Not even really a boss fight, just a really dull sequence that goes on for far too long. God of War - There's a part where you have to push a cage up a ramp while being attacked by infinitely respawning enemies. If you get hit, you drop the cage and it slides back down. There are stopping points along the ramp, but if you're in the wrong spot, it can slide all the way back down. And again, the enemies don't stop coming. Every God of War game seems to have a sequence like this, but this one stands out in my mind the most. |

I hate the Luca section (Blitzball with a shitty team) in FFX and the Temple of Xian (SPIDEEEERS!!!!!!)in Tomb Raider 2. |

I actually like the Fade, but I understand why people don't like it.
The opening dungeon in Baldur's Gate 2 is so despised, people made a mod specifically to avoid it. I'll second the turret sequences in Dead Space. I'm actually replaying that game right now, and I almost stopped when I got to that part. If I hadn't beaten it almost immediately, I probably would have stopped. The opening Ostagar part of Dragon Age: Origins is my own personal Fade part. It's not super long, but I've done it enough that it's super boring. |

I replay Thief- The Metal Age often, but I never bother completing the final mission, Sabotage at Soulforge.

The first Sazh/Vanille chapter in FFXIII is pretty awful. Bad music, lame locale (robot factory or something?). But once you push through that mess, it gets really great with the Snow/Hope chapter. Best part of that game for me, even better on 2nd playthrough.

A few parts in the Wind Waker. The tutorial segment, the stealth sequence and the triforce hunt.

+1 for the Pharos Lighthouse of FFXII though. Thankfully it's at the end of the game. |

Damn. That's exactly what happened to me recently. I was enjoying a 2nd play through of hacking and looting in Origins and quit when I got to that stupid Fade section at the mage tower. It's such a different and tedious change in the gameplay that I didn't want to continue.
I can't think of another game that has ever made me do that. |
