Lady Be Good

They find aircraft like this all the time, granted its getting more rare but most of the aircraft that you see at airshows are recovered from scenarios like this.

Glacier Girl is another example and Kee Bird could have been great but the recovery team was full or morons.

sorry again for derailing this thread.
Wow, that Lady Be Good story was interesting, going to check the other ones out.

You tend to forget how colossal the Sahara is, but even within 200 miles of civilisation - which isn't really that far these days - a freaking plane can go undiscovered for well over half a century. Pretty amazing.

To be fair it does say the "aviation equivalent", which is still kind of absurd in a way but maybe it had more to do with the preserved state of the aircraft.

And these blast points, too accurate for Sandpeople. Only Imperial stormtroopers are so precise.

The British are on it! Hope they get it

Quote:
As Copping's story becomes known, British authorities are hoping to bring his plane back to the United Kingdom and put it on display at the RAF Museum in London. Museum representatives are working with the British Embassy in Cairo and Britain's Ministry of Defence on a possible recovery operation.
"It's an incredible story," said museum spokesman Michael Creane. "It's a perfect story in so many ways. It's incredible the plane sat there in this untouched part of the world for so long. ... We're dedicated to recovering it as fast as we can. This would be a fantastic asset."

It would be funny if someone found something like this on Google Maps, although you probably can't get that close in on Google Maps on an uninhabited area like this.

That's really cool! My great uncle died as a test pilot in New Mexico in a P-40 during WWII. They just found his remains a few years ago.

"King Nine Will Not Return" is an episode of The Twilight Zone that told the story of a B-25 crew member finding himself alone with the wreckage of his plane in the desert.[9] In the episode, the marker of a grave of a member of the fictional plane’s crew is dated "5 Apr, 1943," the day on which Lady Be Good was lost.

They found the bones of the pilot 8 miles from the plane. That's a pretty good distance considering it's in the middle of the Sahara desert. Not a good way to die.

Also as everyone figured the plane is already being trashed. All windows have now been destroyed and gauges are all broken as well as who knows what's missing from souvenir hunters. British museums are moving too slow on this. There may be nothing left soon.
