People who don't mute their phone/tablet on public transport... #1

How is it possible that that many people don't realise, everyone else can hear their notifications going off? Right now there's this lady sitting next to me playing a crosswords game, and every keystroke or successful word makes a beep or ringing noise. Anyone else exposed to this nonsense every day? *puts headphones on*

I'll start giving a fuck when the train/bus is completely silent. I wont put it up to absurdly loud or anything but come on, does this really bother you more than people talking?

Eh if it's not a meeting, or a place like the library meh. In the public there's noises all around you, your ears should be fine.

Never heard of this before.. You seriously put your phone on vibrate before you get on the bus or whatever? If someones calling do you like not answer and then text them to call back later?

Maybe today was a bad day, and hearing this lady's phone make sounds is making him angry due to the day he had.

Doesn't the bus have a sign in front that says "Use audio/visual equipment only with headphones"?

If they refuse to use headphones, practice your loogie technique until they get the point.

No. There are more annoying sounds out there. Being on a bus is already loud enough anyway. A few beeps and rings doesn't make a difference to me.

This is way more annoying in libraries or during lecutres (I mean, wtf, show some respect, asshole) but I wear headphones anyway.

My family has a few cars, too. Most of us probably do at home. Depending on your location, it's easier to take transit to work for some. Downtown jobs for example.

Had this exact thing happen to me today. This guy was sitting there and let his phone ring 4 times before even bothering to take it out of his pocket. Annoying as hell in a library.

I can see if you're in the city or something with lots of background noise and only on a bus for a few minutes, it's probably not annoying. But an actual 1 hour + commute from the suburbs to the city or whatever, with absolute silence except for constant notifications (facebook, email, sms, etc) from several people, plus games etc. It's noticable like that.

In a library, theater, or other place that requires others to be somewhat quiet, sure. But on a bus or public transportation in general, I dont think its that big a deal. As long as its not obnoxiously loud ( I keep mine at a volume I can hear, yet its not blaringly loud).

What kind of transport are you riding that has absolute silence? Just by moving a bus or train produce a lot of noise.

Most newer trains and local buses are pretty quiet inside.

I prefer music/device noise to people talking too loudly, although I'd rather neither.

I have beeps and clicks and pops all turned off by default. I can't stand it on my own phone.

Having to listen to the tstt-tstt-tstt-tsttts-tsststt of someones crap in ear headphones is more annoying though.

It's called public transport - ie you're travelling from point A to point B with other members of the public. As others have said, it's not a library. If it's in a quiet car on a train, then no excuses. If it's not, it's fair game. Otherwise, drive to wherever your're going.

Noise cancelling headphones for the win.

By the way. The problem of unwelcome sound in public transport is easily fixed. Just use in-ear buds and listen to your music. Most if not all other sound will be drowned out.

Does my head in when people have bleeps and alerts in public. In the street it's alright, but even in pubs etc it can be annoying. Once you're inside it should be on vibrate I think. Nothing worse than waiting in line and having to hear a person typing a text or receiving loads of messages.

I always have mine on silent unless I'm at a friend's house or something. Even then a lot of the time I'll just put it to vibrate.

The only place I always have sounds on is home.

I was sitting at the DMV once, and some little kid was playing Angry Birds or something on a phone, volume maxed out, and her mom didn't do a damn thing. Went on for the whole time I was there. It was annoying as hell.

I also once had a class with a chick who constantly texted. Except she didn't have a smart phone, but a regular cell phone. So every time she clicked a key, there was a dialtone. Sitting there, trying to do work, and there's this BEEP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BOOP BEEP BOOP as she's tappity tapping away could get really distracting.

Japan and a city in Austria demand that you silence sour phone in public transport. Because I don't want everyone fucking around with their phones i completely agree with that.

And yes I put my phone on vibrate when I'm in public transport, museum, restaurant. I don't want to bother people.

I agree with it too, my phone is on silent 99.9% of the time (luckily the resting place for it at home is on a glass stand, so I know from quite far when it's ringing). I admire Austria and Japan for putting in such rules. However if you're not in a mode of transport that caters for the ability to have a quiet section (trains are perfect given the natures of their cars) there's not much else you can do (ie in an open plan bus). You may as well ban people sitting next to each other from speaking between themselves.

What annoys me more though is people walking down the road with music playing from their phones without headphones plugged in.

I don't think it's required to put your phone on mute while on the bus. I have no problem with the phone ringing or if there's a tone if somebody got an SMS, however if it's constant (either playing a game or if they are constantly texting back and forth) then you really should put the phone on mute. It's not like you need the extra sound from the phone to know something is happening since you are already paying full attention to it.

It is however never acceptable to play music so that other people can hear you. This includes crappy headphones as well if you are playing the music really loudly.
