People who don't mute their phone/tablet on public transport...
#1
How is it possible that that many people don't realise, everyone else can hear their notifications going off? Right now there's this lady sitting next to me playing a crosswords game, and every keystroke or successful word makes a beep or ringing noise. Anyone else exposed to this nonsense every day? *puts headphones on*

I can see if you're in the city or something with lots of background noise and only on a bus for a few minutes, it's probably not annoying. But an actual 1 hour + commute from the suburbs to the city or whatever, with absolute silence except for constant notifications (facebook, email, sms, etc) from several people, plus games etc. It's noticable like that.

In a library, theater, or other place that requires others to be somewhat quiet, sure. But on a bus or public transportation in general, I dont think its that big a deal. As long as its not obnoxiously loud ( I keep mine at a volume I can hear, yet its not blaringly loud).

It's called public transport - ie you're travelling from point A to point B with other members of the public. As others have said, it's not a library. If it's in a quiet car on a train, then no excuses. If it's not, it's fair game. Otherwise, drive to wherever your're going.
Noise cancelling headphones for the win. |

Does my head in when people have bleeps and alerts in public. In the street it's alright, but even in pubs etc it can be annoying. Once you're inside it should be on vibrate I think. Nothing worse than waiting in line and having to hear a person typing a text or receiving loads of messages.
I always have mine on silent unless I'm at a friend's house or something. Even then a lot of the time I'll just put it to vibrate. The only place I always have sounds on is home. |

It is perfectly permissible to shout "OH DAVID BOWIE YES" during intercourse with Oneself.

I was sitting at the DMV once, and some little kid was playing Angry Birds or something on a phone, volume maxed out, and her mom didn't do a damn thing. Went on for the whole time I was there. It was annoying as hell.
I also once had a class with a chick who constantly texted. Except she didn't have a smart phone, but a regular cell phone. So every time she clicked a key, there was a dialtone. Sitting there, trying to do work, and there's this BEEP BEEP BOOP BEEP BOOP BOOP BEEP BOOP as she's tappity tapping away could get really distracting. |

And yes I put my phone on vibrate when I'm in public transport, museum, restaurant. I don't want to bother people. |

So true. It absolutely floors me that Apple can provide products that they market with such pride in terms of build quality and "fashion" when the earphones they provide are just so shit.

What annoys me more though is people walking down the road with music playing from their phones without headphones plugged in. |

I don't think it's required to put your phone on mute while on the bus. I have no problem with the phone ringing or if there's a tone if somebody got an SMS, however if it's constant (either playing a game or if they are constantly texting back and forth) then you really should put the phone on mute. It's not like you need the extra sound from the phone to know something is happening since you are already paying full attention to it.
It is however never acceptable to play music so that other people can hear you. This includes crappy headphones as well if you are playing the music really loudly. |
