Aussie man going for world record of "longest game marathon"
#1
I posted this in the D3 thread but think it's worthy of it's own thread. An Australian man is attempting to break the world record for longest game marathon which is currently set at 109 hours. His goal is 120. The event will be from May 15th - 20th and will be streamed on Twitch.TV (link below). He also has several sponsors as well. Should be interesting to say the least.

I know a group did something similar with Smash Brothers. These records have weird rules about them. Some of them have to do with safety I think, but I believe that they are against the spirit of the record. Does anyone know who did the smash brothers record? Maybe it was Giant Bomb.

I think the longest I've ever played nonstop is like 3 days (Grinding for epic mount in WoW along time ago.), or just playing several games on Xbox 360 which could add up to more days. I wasn't counting though, just guessing (Hard to keep track of time when you're into a game like that.). Could be much lower, and I just feel like it's longer or something.
Anyhow, I don't think I've ever considered something like that to be something that can be record breaking. I thought you'd have to play nonstop for, like, 2-4 weeks for the world record. Guess I hadn't really thought about it that much. Don't think I'll want to try to beat it though. :P

I'd say that staying able to play this long is a challenge if you don't use drugs or suffer from illness that prevent you from sleeping... ^_^ I doubt you'll in danger of dying by doing this, though, as long as there's someone checking you're well. |

But people who stay up for a long time gotta remember to stay hydrated and fed. Doing repetitive things, like many people do in these cases, makes you forget drinking/eating -- and, since you're up twice as long as usual, you're burning up twice the amount of energy (Maybe not twice, since many people sit infront of a computer or are more relaxed. But probably somewhere around twice as much.) There's lots of speculation about sleep. I think I remember reading that we're conditioned to sleep from birth cause the body needs sleep for its growing period, but after that it it's not really that necessary. Atleast not for the same amount of hours. (Not the article I remembered, I think, just found a random one on sleep.) "Is Sleep Necessary? Monday, August 25, 2008 - 22:35 in Biology & Nature Is sleep essential? The answer seems obvious, since we all have to do it, but to a sleep scientist, the question of what constitutes sleep is so complex that scientists are still trying to define the essential function of something we do every night. The search for the core function of sleep can seem as elusive as the search for the mythological phoenix, says Chiara Cirelli, an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in Madison. Some scientists argue that sleep is merely a way to impose a quiet, immobile state (rest), and isn't important by itself in mammals and birds. This is the so-called "null hypothesis," and Cirelli and co-author Giulio Tononi reject it. Read More..." http://esciencenews.com/sources/scie...leep.necessary But, keep in mind, since most people are used to sleep, then suddenly cutting it off/reducing it will obviously have side effects. I'm sure people have noticed an increase in depression or anxiety if they haven't slept well for 1 night, even.

This guy just managed to turn what a good deal of GAF will be doing anyway into a spectacle. I can't wait to hear about the hilarity that'll ensue once he passes out. The time I fell asleep on the keyboard playing CS resulted in a ton of laughs for the other players.
