this one is great, post-commentary but shows typical stuff you might run across in DayZ, trust/don't trust/kill or spare...decisions have to be quicker than your trigger finger |

I have read a few comments here where people would like the main threat to be the zombies. I totally disagree with this, sure they should be very dangerous if you're noticed by them, but other players should always be a bigger threat. Zombies should be there to add pressure on you when you enter a town or city. You should be able to defeat them by closing a door (unless there are too many) or losing them in the woods. Only ever becoming a big threat in numbers, which I think the game does well so far (Other than barricading with doors and losing them is nigh on impossible and hopefully gets fixed)
The main danger should always be other players, like the best zombie films, whether it's the hillbilly rescue party that kills the protagonist in Night of the Living Dead, the Bikers in Dawn of the Dead or the great Captain Rhodes from Day of the Dead. Zombie survival has always been about humanity breaking down and people fucking each other over. I use a pretty rubbish metaphor that you, the player are like the submarine red october, the zombies are the ocean, a constant danger ready to come flooding in if you fuck up, the other players are like the enemy submarines out to hunt you down. |

I need to know if Gabe Newell is actually playing as a bandit or a normal skinned player? It matters, I need to know of the hunter.
I agree with you DeathCubeK, I find the best thing about this game is if your in a city and you spot another play you think twice before straight out shooting as you could end up swarmed. |

This mod reminds me of when I used to be big on pc gaming before I made the switch to primarily consoles. |

We don't need a rubbish Hollywood story or stereotyped characters or special infected monsters. Stay true to the zombie genre and keep it as hardcore as possible :) |

Making my way up to Berezino through the woods, 7 deer stands, several farms and a factory later, still found no weapons, thats 3 days now and no weapons. Tin cans, crossbow bolts and chemlights are that greet me. Someone is surely anticipating where i'm gonna go and stealing all the shit before i get there :(

One of the worst things that can happen while entering a crashed helicopter is that your character turns into a boar. Permanently. |

That sounds awesome, can you attack people as a boar? I would totally play as a killer boar. |

climbed up a crane.
Helped out a guy attacked by zombies then got shot at from other direction by two guys. One said to to the other to shoot me.... they began shooting at me again attracting zombies, they ran away maybe 600 m and got rid of the zombies. Whem they thought they were safe I shot both in the head with my Enfield Now I am a bandit... just for defending myself against bad people |

I would love to play PVE, especially while trying to figure out the game. I'm Arcane on the servers - forever friendly... |

One time a survivor threatened to kill me if I didn't give him my gun, but I figured it's easier to find another gun than to regain humanity, so I told him he'd have to kill me for it, at least forcing him one step closer to bandithood. |

Me too. However I have no problem killing a bandit. After being killed last night at the airfield like I was, I now have a zero tolerance policy.

Before they did this they would need to allow more than one character that was locked to pvp or pve. Else people would go to a pve server, load up on all the good shit and then return to a pvp server armed to the teeth. It could be a real problem.

My concern about this is that the boar thing would last forever, and you would never be able to play DayZ again (since apparently the bandit skin lasts across all profiles and deaths and respawns?). I still haven't gotten confirmation one way or another.

That could actually be pretty fun, whether you can just post notes anywhere, or just write one as/after you die and it stays with your body.
You could: -write warnings to other players (e.g. "Don't trust ________" "Bandits in Elektro") -set up treasure hunts, (leave a trail of hints/riddles on how to find your stash) -Make signs to help players navigate/meet up without maps -Bait(i.e. bandits place a note, and then shoot while players are occupied reading it) -Etc. (e.g."Tell my wife I love her") I played for a good 3 hours last night and had a blast. The one thing I think would be awesome would be if large bands of people became legitimately organized. Imagine having a base camp somewhere, full of supplies, and guarded by a few lookouts. While they stand guard, others would head off to forage more supplies for the group, and if they had a vehicle to speed off in, they could do so at an even faster rate. It would be even better if factions emerged, with each having a large amount of members. When new players join, factions could vie for these new recruits to add to their force, and send escorts to bring them back to their base. New recruits would be relegated to menial tasks (e.g. foraging for supplies) until they earned enough trust, and be assigned to more important tasks (Guard, Driver, Scout). With this being the case, you would not only have to worry about individual bandits, but larger organized forces attacking. Spies could try to infiltrate opposing factions and steal supplies or weaken their defenses and firefights could break out among rival foraging parties. Even more interesting would be seeing how larger groups would hold together, especially when facing tough times. If a player is approached by an stronger rival faction asking him to join them, he has to make a decision of whether to stay loyal to his friends, or betray them for an increased chance of survival. This concept doesn't need any mod updates to work, it just needs a good community to work. And hey, who is to say this won't happen naturally over time, as people realize they have a better chance at surviving together in the long term, rather than going solo and backstabbing each other for short-term relief. Something else that would be cool for the game would be vaults (or locked up packs if using the same old models), which would require a password/combination/key to open. You could store supplies there without fear of being robbed, and you could create a joint-supply depot with friends by sharing the password with them. Or you could need a key to open it, and you could create and give away as many keys as you want, but whenever you die, bandits can loot the key from your body, so the more keys you spread around, the better the chance that one of the keyholders might be killed and, his key will be used to rob your supplies. |

Oh yea, been meaning to ask how the game decided who you are, is it by ip address or your cd key?
After telling my brother a few stories and showing him some of the videos he'd love to try this too but afaik you can't on the same pc? I have another pc here but I'm not sure if it's worth going through the hassle of setting this up if it's decided by ip address. |

Forts/Base Camps would be an awesome feature. It'd also help/push people to work together a bit more (and open the game up to raiding each other for items I guess). |

It's worth running through the intro tutorial (either Arma II or OA) to get a feel for all the controls before diving into DayZ.

I saw on some other forums people writing short stories about their experiences in the game and thought it would be a fun thing to do.
I'm useless at anything creative so sorry if this is a bit amateurish, I had to cut a lot out because it got far too long so if it jumps about a bit im sorry. Feel free to share your own stories.

I really don't like the flowery prose people put into the stories. I guess it's something cynical and broken in my brain. When a 3 foot drop into shallow water makes me pass out for a minute, or trying to take ammo out of my backpack makes all of my ammo vanish, I don't come up with a story for it, I'm just like "eh that sucks". :P
If I have time tonight I will try to play. Do GAF people play exclusively on EU hardcore servers now? |

It's fairly easy to survive for long periods as long as you keep away from coastal areas and known hotspots like airports. Zombies are hardly a threat if you are even somewhat cautious.
