Carroll Shelby, automotive legend, passes away at age 89 #1

Sad day today in the automotive world.....

Carroll Shelby has passed away at the age of 89. The legendary tuner and proprietor of the famous marque that bears his name had been in the hospital for several weeks, suffering from pneumonia. Shelby addressed his fans fourteen days before his death, saying that he was resting comfortably and being taken care of by his children.

Anyone familiar in the least with automotive history is well aware of Shelby's vast vehicular exploits, so we'll just touch on them here. Carroll was a successful race car driver in the 1950s before creating his own racing team to take on the likes of Ferrari, using Ford-powered sportscar called the Cobra. Suffice it to say, Shelby and his Cobra were extremely successful. Later, Shelby's name would become synonymous with the fastest and most powerful Ford Mustang models ever created.

Shelby is survived by his three children Patrick, Michael and Sharon, his sister Anne Shelby Ellison of Fort Worth and his wife Cleo. An official press release can be found below.

One of the pioneers of American automotive greatness. Visionary.

I know the 427 Cobra always got the love, but the Daytona Coupe was always my personal fave.

RIP. He will be missed. Shelby's definitely have a distinctive sound compared to other muscle cars that's for certain.

I remember seeing the '13 GT500 Mustang parked on the street on my way to work. I just stood in awe of that thing for five minutes - it was gorgeous.

More than likely a '10-12 GT500, as the new 2013 models (660hp, 200mph+ !!) are not yet available.

Yea, I was going to post a picture of the "Eleanor" GT500 from Gone In 60 Seconds, but even though it's based on the standard GT500, it isn't directly one of his creations.

Probably then. Was like last year so most likely a '12. T'was a thing of beauty that caused at least five on-lookers, myself included, to gawk at it.

Yup.

Sad day for the automotive world. Shelby is literally the father of American exotics. He even had a hand in designing the first Dodge Viper. A man, and a legend.

Yup, the man has connections to soooo many amazing vehicles. I mentioned this in the Automotive thread, but it's worth repeating....

I remember a quote from Steve Jobs, when announcing the first iPad, I believe. Talking about the iPod, iMac, and iPhone before, he said something to the effect of....

"A company would be proud to be associated with just one of those products. We're lucky enough to have done all of them.".

I think something very similarly about Carroll. The 289/427 Cobra, the Daytona Coupe, the GT40, the GT350/500 Mustangs, the Viper, etc. You'd be lucky to be associated with just one of any of those, but to be the heavily involved with ALL of them?? Legendary indeed.

RIP. Love the look of the older Shelby Mustangs. If I could own only a single classic American muscle car it would be a Shelby 'stang from the 60s.
