Played it last night. Very average all the way around. Still I kind of liked it.

- There seemed to be the slightest of delay for moving and pulling up your gun. It's not twitchy or precise but that means you just play more methodical.

- The rifle is accurate and deadly. This is a saving grace when your shooter is not the best.

- I liked the squad commands. They're simple, you can do them in a fight, and your squadies pack big firepower.

- Everything else was super duper average. It might have a great story? Hmm... I'm curious with how it's going to review.

This demo made me realise how much i need a new rainbow six game.....

the demo copied a lot of other games and added nothing to make it unique imo

I think they did the game a disservice by not including more of the sand elements or the "grey" decision choices that are supposed to play a part of the story.

Definitely. I heard of that stuff which is why I downloaded the demo, but if I didn't know any better, I'd say this was just another third person shooter from playing this demo. Literally nothing felt original about it.

I never played the older Spec Ops games, but I have a feeling that this game is to that franchise what SOCOM 4 was to its predecessors.

Man, all I want is just ONE straight-up tactical shooter. I really fucking hope Takedown pans out.

And honestly i really like this, im probably gonna get this on PC day one...only for SP though.

Its the Gears game ive wanted on PC since Gears of War 1.

There are a couple of places where if you throw grenades, the sand kicks up in enemies' faces and they get stunned for a few seconds.

Feels strange playing a game where the enemy drops after like 2 shots. I thought the graphics looked pretty good. Would buy at a lower price.

What a relief after the bullet-sponge enemies in Uncharted and Gears.

I remember hearing about this game and the dev trying to hype it up by calling it the Apocalypse Now of games....I thought it looked overly generic at the time too but the latest trailers had me interested.

I played a bit of the demo and enjoyed it (I need to go back finish it).

Yeah... I didn't feel that at all. The game's colour palate meant that the enemies got lost in the environments, leading to me scanning through the battle areas with my teammate cursor, spotting targets that way. The shooting felt fun, but overall everything felt so uninspired. I was hoping for a far more emotionally engaging cast of characters, and environments that really felt like I was exploring a ruined city. What I got was a corridor shooter with a "ruined city" template slapped on top of it.

Also, for the love of all that is holy, don't start your demo with a god damn turret helicopter section. It just felt so run of a mill in every aspect.

Edit: Also, the big "USE THE SAND TO DESTROY YOUR FOES" moment was shooting a bus filled with sand. It felt so bloody forced.

Yep if any game was deserving of sandbox style level design (no pun intended) it was this one. Having things like that bus, but not telegraphed to the player, set up around a big area for you or your enemies to take advantage of would have been cool.

I also found distractingly comical the ripping off Apocalypse Now.
I get that it was the major influence and that they wanted to do "the Apocalypse Now of gaming" (LOL) but just clumsly ripping the film off is just bad.
Looks like Apocalypse Now directed by Michael Bay.

Pretty boring, in all honesty. There isn't enough "play with the sand" elements in the demo. Maybe two areas that are mandatory and that's it.

The rest of it was just ho-hum shooting. :/

It's not bad for a multiplatform Gears. But I really wouldn't pay $60 for it.

I rewatched the Story Trailer. I'm still really interested in this. I really hope the Dev team fully realizes the potential of the story and themes that they've been talking about for like two years now. It would be so disappointing if the story just turns generic or feels forced.

But the trailer makes it look really interesting. I like how disturbing some of the scenes look, with mutilation and burned bodies everywhere. Even the beginning of the demo felt a bit like a horror game, with the desolate city (till the goons showed up and everything went all shooter on us).

I hope the final game does have a lot more atmospheric and moody sections. There was the beginning and then the bit at the end in the crooked building.

The demo, by itself, is decent but certainly not amazing, but the game does seem to have a lot of potential. The story seems like it could be really interesting and I absolutely adore the settings. I get a bit of a Gears/Bulletstorm vibe from it, which is not a bad thing.

The shooting is actually quite good and there are some cool little nuances in the controls (such as holding circle while moving to jump over obstacles).

I certainly walked away much more impressed than I had expected.

I'm not putting much stock in the sand system, though, as this doesn't seem to be doing anything outside of what you'd expect from a UE3 game. I doubt they've managed to craft a special dynamic sand system here. Would have been cool to see Journey-like sand interaction with even more depth. Unfortunately, what was shown has a very simple, scripted appearance. When you shoot the bus early on they simply fill the screen with particles to simulate sand movement. When the dust clears, the geometry is simply different (modeled to make it appear as if sand has flooded the area).

The demo pleasantly surprised me. I liked the atmosphere and the setting. I'll be picking this up.

As a nice side effect it's coming from a German studio, so I'll support them this time (didn't buy Yager on Xbox back in the day).

I just played the demo earlier today and it seems like more of a rental than a buy for me. I agree with what others have said about the feedback from the guns fealing weak, they need more muzzle flash and damage indication when rounds hit, the enemies just stand there unflinchingly while they get shot, showing absolutely no reaction. I really like the color palate the game is working with (especially the more varied stuff from the trailer at the end of the demo) and the fact every single movement command isn't on one button is certainly welcome. The voice acting was also really good, Nolan North doing a slightly more soldierly take on Nathan Drake seemed to work well, and radio announcer/dj guy seemed appropriately Dennis Hopperish.

Edit: also sliding down a zip-line using your hands is one of the stupidest things I have ever seen, could they not have animated a clasp or at least had them use their rifles?

Played the demo. I'd give it 7.5 based on it. It's a good game to play and the story is inspired by one of my favorite movies of all time: Apocalypse Now.

btw, best headshots ever.

Buddy AI is satisfactory. I wish they didn't run into crossfire after you give a command to take out someone far away.

I thought it was pretty fun. One thing to keep in mind is that the content was made specifically for the demo, and may not reflect the final release. It was pretty clear - to me at least - that they did a lot of cutting and pasting. It felt like they were cutting out large portions to skip to various gameplay parts, but still trying to keep a bit of the story progression in place. I really felt that I got a good overall feel for gameplay, graphics and storyline.

I don't know what else is coming out in June, but this could be a sleeper hit in the same way that Bulletstorm was. Not a home run, but a solid double or triple.

EDIT: I thought the dialogue and voice acting was really good. The banter amongst your squadmates was really well done.

Cool I always wanted to watch the Video Game Cutscene version of Apocalypse Now interspersed with bland, cookie-cutter cover based shooter gameplay. They're really making a push towards video games as an artistic medium.

I played the demo with zero expectations and enjoyed it for what it was. I actually really liked the mechanic where you get a couple seconds of slowdown after a headshot. Made it really rewarding to chain headshots together.
