Sorry, but even though the overall quality may have slipped, I still like most of the characters on The Office.

30 Rock is just horrible by comparison.

IMO, Chuck went off the rails in S3. It was semi-watchable the rest of the way, but I constantly bitched about the terrible plotting. I know it was a popcorn show, but the leaps of logic and reliance on artificially stupid characters was really unacceptably lazy writing. The charm of the leads half-salvaged it, though, and there are a couple of good episodes from S3 to S5. Though I, like a lot of people, really hated the main arc of S3 and so S4 seemed like a relief just by comparison.

I don't think there's a clear answer, and who knows what the drop off is, but if friday night community gets the same viewership, won't that actually be a good thing for longevity?

The target audience for a show like Community isn't home on Friday nights. They may register a lot more newer viewers from the audience that is home on Fridays that previously never tuned in on Thursday because of CBS crapola or Idol. If I had to guess, I'd say the show is going to die a miserable death on Fridays, but we'll get our 13 episodes and some closure before it rides off into syndication.

The only way it could be put on a worse night is if it ended up on Saturday. I would be shocked if Community made a 1.0 on Fridays with Whitney as the lead in. I would love for it to somehow find a larger audience on Friday, I really would, but I have a feeling somebody named Harmon had to fight just to get that renewal for 13. Put 'Stargate' or Battlestar' in the title and it's Friday numbers will soar on that alone.

Nah community won't drastically drop in ratings; its audience is the kind that would follow from slot to slot. I think it'll be the last season but it will do well for friday.

I used to watch Terminator TSCC and Dollhouse. Both were on Friday night. Both had a small, dedicated fanbase. Both lasted two seasons.

I am gonna guess that the initial ratings will be lower, but when they add in DVR ratings, it will stay about the same.

Agreed. I dont see this type of showing growing over time in viewers. Probably have lost more than they gained with all the gimmick episodes this season. The solid base will always be there, and will at least sustain the Friday timeslot for 13 episodes. I'm secretly hoping for ever other new comedy on NBC to fail though.

I've never quite understood exactly what the key difference is between the UK and the US in terms of weekend viewing, but for some reason Saturday is generally the biggest television night of the week for us and Friday is often highly-rating too, with comedy doing particularly well.

I get that people go out on those days in the US, but they go out on those days in the UK, too, and yet they're the days which get particularly high ratings over here and just dead over there. Why?

It was a cultural shift. A few decades ago, Friday night was big for TV in the US, but over time people stopped watching that night and networks stopped putting anything good that night, two things that probably reinforced each other.

Having good programming air on Friday/Saturday would certainly help, but none of the major broadcast networks even try anymore. Friday is a burial ground for dying shows, was a hotbed for sci-fi at one time, and Saturday is for reruns and Saturday Night Live.

Season 3.

Season 1 and 2 had a very strong narrative arc. Season 3 never delivers on the promised resolution on that arc. It closes the story from those first two seasons, but does so very poorly. Season 4 was better, but it was a complete tangent from the over arcing story of season 1-3.

Season 5 is basically a bunch of random stuff. Pretty good. At the end they make you think they would go back and give the season 1-3 storyline a proper ending, but they don't.

Friday and Saturdays in the US have pretty much become bar nights in regard to content. In other words sports.

Been slowly marching through season 2, watched the Valentine's Dance/Party at Winger's episode last night and forgot how awesome it was when Abed and Troy were trying to get the librarian's attention, so he yelled "BOOKS!" at her.

God that librarian was cute haha
