I normally don't even bother investigating the half-hour comedies because they are almost always horrible, but based on the reactions I had to look at The Neighbors. Mother of God...

EDIT: Genuinely still reeling from the horror of that trailer. Did anyone play You're In The Movies? That trailer seriously would fit in on that game disc.

Yeah those are the only two shows that interest me. My one worry about Last Resort is how expensive it looks. I fear that if it doesn't have mega ratings right from the start, it'll be a goner. And since ABC put it in the Thursday 8PM timeslot (no lead-in and competing against Big Bang Theory/X-Factor?) it's going to be tough for the series to make a splash, unless they market the shit out of it.

Half-hours have been noticeably stronger than dramas for network TV the past few years. Even when I have my DVR loaded up with network comedies and cable dramas, I almost always go for the Happy Endings/Community/Parks & Recreation/etc. before anything else.

I don't think people order a show involving Reba McEntire because they want a quality, erudite, sophisticated, cosmopolitan comedy. I think they order it because they want female stay-at-homes in low-to-medium income brackets who want nothing more than "spunky woman gits 'r dun" and "her makeup is so pretty", creatively. I don't say that to be pejorative, but rather to say that I don't think you should read a lack of pickup as a lack of creative faith in Awesometown simply because heaping shit got picked up instead.

(If you send me your pilot I'd be glad to watch it!)

Half of this is me rambling on and being bitter. And it's not even Malibu or How to Live, which look harmless (though something I'm totally not invested in). Family Tools and especially Neighbors look legitimately terrible. And Neighbors is going post-Modern.

I can understand why we weren't picked up, I just feel awful for our cast and crew. Sure, they'll work on other stuff, it just must sting even more them to be passed up for... Neighbors. We didn't redefine comedy as we know it, but it was a sweater version of Happy Endings. And that's my humor, to a t. So I was probably a bit more invested in it than I should have been because I wanted to see episode two. Ah, well.

Yeah, I certainly didn't mean to disparage the quality comedies you mentioned, and I watch and enjoy some of those and others. What I meant was that I never start watching them at premiere (rather waiting for reviews and impressions) because so many of those that are ordered are terrible. And I feel that the horrible comedies are more painful to watch than the horrible dramas.

ABC giving Revenge the old Desperate Housewives spot is a stroke of scheduling genius.

The video for Last Resort sold me on it. Looks pretty awesome. I'm also totally in for Zero Hour simply because it has Addison Timlin, who won me over when she was on Californication. Mmmmm.

You're joking aren't you? I heard Sony spent a lot on the pilot (dat gimble) shooting in Hawaii, drafting in Casino Royale's very own martin campbell to direct the pilot but the first part of the trailer on the sub looked horribly cheap.

It was like a soap opera with that flat, lifeless lighting. In fact there have been several pilots this season that have looked a little on the cheap side. I wonder if this is a conscious effort on the part of the studios/networks to cut back a little. In saying that the sub CGI did look good though so we'll see.

I have high hopes for this show but it really didn't 'wow' me at all with that trailer. :(

The ludicrous, gratuitous nudity that Californication crow-barred in when her character was first introduced was utterly unnecessary and laughable and did nothing more than to show how infantile that show is.....

I may have already posted this earlier--I wonder what ABC will do with Devious Maids if/when they get the final pilot and order it to series. It'd be a natural fit for the old Desperate Housewives spot, but Revenge is a pretty good fit too.

Do No Harm does look cheap and nasty. And add the bizarre casting choices into the mix and it looks like the first genuine head scratcher of all the season pick ups this far.

I wouldn't be surprised if Do No Harm does turn out to be an attempt at a 'cheaper' prime time drama.

That's true. It looks like CBS is finally taking some chances. Well, as much as CBS can take a chance and still be well within their comfort zone.

Though I still think VEGAS should be titled Ralph Lamb. Vegas just says nothing to me as a title...., except for where it's set obviously.

But he also loves Happy Endings and Suburgatory so I dunno.

Remember - ABC had a horrendous comedy development season this year. But it's even weirder that Neighbors is going post Modern instead of How to Live with Your Sarah Chalke.

666 park avenue... looks so bad @___@ yet i'll have to give it a try for vanessa. the other dramas look awful. red widow, missing take two. last resort looks interesting, but that 8pm thursday hour on abc is a black hole. i refuse to believe anything will work as a lead into greys.

the tuesday line up on abc looks like a bomb. i feel bad for happy endings and apt 23. their surrounded by cancellation fodder.

abc's line up looks like "too old for CW" tv. yet with better actors in bad roles.

friday seems like a good play. tim allen and reba on a friday night budget comedy hour. i can see it working. shark tank and 20/20 already hold up.

and the neighbors... i gotta give them kudos for green lighting this stuff. staying positive: it looks better than cavemen... or work it... .___. i cant believe their putting it post modern family. next season im expecting a remake of dinosaurs (it'll happen).

when they said they were going back to the quirky/fantasy days that produced all their modern hits... i was thinking more shows in the vein of ugly betty/lost/housewives/pushing daises, mixed with the obvious shonda rhimes crap. once upon a time gave me false hope last go around. what an awful selection of pick ups.

As I sort of understand it, Ugly Betty was a short-term hit and then just treaded water. Desperate Housewives was a hit and then tailed off into a dependable show but not a world-beater. Everyone tried to copy Lost, and no one got it right. And as for Daisies, it had great momentum at first, but post-writer's strike, without promotion in the new year, it died hard.

There is a 25% chance that ABC actually does a full 2-hour comedy block in the early Spring.

ABC trailer reactions (again, these are just reactions based off of trailers that someone had 2 days - at most - to cut. I'll give everything a try once):

The Family Tools - Leah Remini. No. Next. (But really, looks like a complete and utter mess)

How to Live with blah blah blah - Cute, but it feels like a multi cam put into a single with the necessary fucks and shits bleeped out. Not unexpected given Lonow's pedigree. An eh.

Malibu Country - Good god no. Oh my god no.

The Neighbors - Okay, so here's the thing. Dan Fogelman is a huge talent (he wrote Crazy Stupid Love and Tangled), so I'm not going to write this off of one trailer. And if ABC feels strong enough in the product to air it after Modern, maybe something is there this trailer doesn't have.

BUT trailer was an atrocity and should never be considered by anyone to be something "humorous"

666 Park Ave - It's an Alloy property, and the trailer played that angle up. I'm curious, so it's accomplished that much.

Last Resort - I've talked enough about this, but I liked the trailer. What that means for the final product, I have no idea.

Mistresses - So, the show is about 4 women that all happen to go after married men? No. Please. I love you, Sun, but no.

Nashville - I kinda... liked it? I usually don't get into soapy stuff, but that trailer was really well done. I love the concept (and country music). Also, Tami. Putting this one in a strong maybe.

Red Widow - Radha Mitchell's American accent isn't that great, and Melissa at the helm doesn't inspire a lot of confidence, but that was a well done trailer. I hear the pilot is really good, and the subject matter is intriguing enough. I'll watch more. (EDIT: Just found out Radha isn't playing an American. Erase that complaint!)

Zero Hour - Nazis, conspiracies, undead babies, yes yes yes MOAR (some bad VO in there, but most of the ADR is temporary at this point). I don't even know if that was good, but the subject matter alone just got my season pass.

No. I didn't really notice anything wrong with the sub in the first part of the trailer. Looked okay to me. I was mainly wowed by the cg sub (compared to the cg sub on Lost, which looked like dog shit) and the fact that it was shot on location in Hawaii. It couldn't have been cheap.

ABC:

YES: How to live with your parents, The neighbors (looks funny but I wonder how long the can pull the alien thing off), Last Resort (it sounds like a really good and new idea)

MAYBE: 666 Park

NO: Malibu Country (I just don't like Reby McIntire), Mistresses, Nashville (mainly because it is a drama about music I don't like)

I couldn't watch/find the other trailers (thanks ABC for the country block). So far I am not really convinced the new shows will have a big impact like Modern Family did. I am not even sure if there is a show I would vote not being canceled soon.

NBC > FOX > ABC so far... :)

CBS' new shows just typify the pilot/upfront process of FUD and nonsense. I'd heard lots of talk the pilot script for Partners was awful and just like every other gay/straight series the Will + Grace guys have tried to launch since...., Will + Grace went off the air.

But there it is on the CBS schedule right next to one of it's biggest comedy hits on a Monday night when stuff like Super Fun Night was passed over which supposedly turned out great.

Another prime example of the smoke and mirrors around pilot season is Made In Vegas (aka Baby Big Shot..., urgh) from Sonytv which makes the fall schedule albeit on a Friday night.

After Sonytv sued CBS (and WBtv) over their pilot Quean, which supposedly was too much like Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Les Moonves was supposedly furious. Rumours had it that CBS would have 'no more shows from Sonytv!!!!".

And lo and behold what do we have? Sonytv sue CBS/Wbtv over their female legal drama and what do CBS out on their fall schedule? A female legal drama from Sonytv.

Eh. What cha' gonna do? Pilot season is a weird time.

An interesting schedule. I'm a little surprised that Partners got such a plum sport on the schedule but 2 Broke Girls seems to be a big enough hit to anchor the night alongside HIMYM etc so if they believe in the comedy then coolio.

But moving 2.5 Men this late in the show's life to give POI a stronger lead in just seems like clever scheduling to me.

So essentially, Nashville is "Country Strong: The TV Series"

And "Zero Hour" is "Every Dan Brown Novel: The TV Series"

I actually somewhat like most of the ABC line up sans Family Tools, The Neighbors and Red Widow.

I actually liked Malibu Country, mostly because it reminds me of "Reba" which I loved plus it has Sara Rue who I also love.

Yikes. Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men together again, but now on Thursdays? That will destroy all the ratings for the comedy competition on NBC even more than it has before.

Interesting to see Big Bang be the lead in for 2.5 Men now though.

I hate the CBS schedule. All of their new dramas are launching so late, it's impossible for any of them to be buzzed, four quadrant shows like Person of Interest was this year. A huge mistake. They're just protecting their established shows.

I could be making this up, but I recall reading that the pilot was $10 million.

So far Last Resort is the only thing that definitely has my attention next season.

So are Vegas and Golden Boy procedurals too?

Damn. How much did Pan Am's pilot cost?

Adult Swim Greenlights ‘Childrens Hospital’ Spinoff Series ‘Newsreaders’

Quote:
Adult Swim has given straight-to-series order to Newsreaders, a spinoff of the network’s hit comedy series Childrens Hospital. Based on the “Newsreaders” episodes of Childrens Hospital that aired during seasons two and three, Newsreaders is a satire of the network television newsmagazine genre and explores the vital issues that actually don’t affect us every day, from hard-hitting investigations to harder-hitting heartwarming profiles. The series was created by the creative team behind Childrens Hospital: executive producers Rob Corddry, Jonathan Stern and David Wain.
Yes! These segments were always so hilarious. Children's Hospital is one of the best comedies on TV, so the more spin offs the better. NTSF:SD:SUV is also awesome.

I wouldn't be able to tell you, but a lot of Pan Am's pilot expenses were the cost of the airport set, so they probably got economagically amortized over the life of the series.

$10-12 million.

BUT you're right. Usually, expensive sets pay for themselves over the course of the series and are very frontloaded on cost. Of course, Pan Am only got 14 episodes, so...

Heads up Nikita fans - looks like it's being held for midseason.

Wouldn't 22 episodes be a little long for midseason?
