That's how I felt with a lot of them. Like what do those bumper cases do? I can't imagine they protect your phone at all. That's why I knew if I was going to buy a case, I'd get something that I knew would protect my phone like the Otterbox. My phone would definitely be fucked up by now if it wasn't for that case, so I know I've gotten my money's worth.

A cheap bumper case will save your screen/camera from getting scratched up on rough surfaces due to the raised surface. That's primarily the reason I use a case. I worry about that more than actually dropping it.

Eclipse for my iPhone4: Real drop protection (i use my iPhone for everything and drop it a lot) while leaving the full front unimpeded for use.
MicroShell for her iPhone4: Minimal protection, but she never drops her phone. Ultra-thin.

I've had this case since my old iphone 4. I bought it because of the aesthetics mainly, anyways, unfortunately my phone fell on concrete and landed right on the bottom where there is no protection, cracked the screen. With that said, I had dropped it many times before and it landed on the sides and corners with no damage at all. I'd still recommend the case but beware, there is obviously cases that offer more protection than this one. I still love and I'm currently using it on my 4S.

I use the Speck case posted above, it's fantastic.

Thin case with a nice grip but doesn't get stuck in my pockets like rubber cases do and doesn't slip out of my hand like hard plastic cases do.

I frequently take my case off (iPhone dock in my car), and other, harder cases made this 1) a chore and 2) a risk because the repeated removal caused pieces on those cases to break.

This is the right answer, have tried many and this one is the best, so easy to take off to dock it in my office dock and i have dropped the phone a few time with it and nothing happened, really thin too.

Get the lifeproof case. It's actually thinner than most cases like candyshell, and protects from high distance drops and water so you can use your phone in the shower or in the pool.

How tacky are those? I had a rubberized case on my original iPhone and it was too tacky to easily slip into a pocket and was a lint magnet.

Otterbox Defender for me. Go big or go home! Super bulky and a pain in the ass if you're wearing anything but baggy pants. But it does what the name implies: it defends your iPhone. I've dropped my phone in a puddle during a rainstorm, I've accidentally kicked it, I've accidentally thrown it, I've dropped it numerous times — the Otterbox tanked it all. It takes your punishment and asks for seconds. I'll put up with the extra bulkiness any day. Plus, I actually really like how it looks.

This is what I have. I've dropped the phone screen-side onto the sharp edge of a metal bar from up high and the phone is completely fine where it otherwise would have shattered the screen.

It does collect dust, but you can just open it up once every few months and give it a clean. It really is tough as balls and well worth paying for instead of some stupid warranty.

Allows you to keep your iPhone naked but protects it while in your pocket or not in use. The leather quality is really nice and once it breaks in, it's easy to quickly get your phone in and out of it. I've been using it since late July with my iPhone 4 and both the phone and the sleeve are still in perfect condition.

I also have a matching version for my iPad 3 (designed to work with the smart cover). Classy as hell. I really dislike cases since it just covers up Apple's nice designs. Only real downside to sleeve is it's easy to misplace and doesn't protect your phone if you drop it while actually using it.

If your looking at the commuter, take a look at monoprice, they have a case that is exactly the same as the commuter, but is less than $10.

That's what I've got on my phone and I like it a lot. Actually replaced my commuter with it.

several things beat a naked iphone 4. concrete, for instance. hard tile floors, ceramic tiles, wood as well.

i have a cheap $5 pixelskin knockoff that's absorbed nearly a dozen drops in the 2 years i've had the phone while, ironically enough, making the phone easier to grip. it also gives me the luxury of simply treating my iPhone like my old flip-phones and not cradle it like the fragile glass sandwich it is.

Speck Candyshell. Not as thin and shitty as those "clip-on" cases that are popular but not as chunky as the otterbox series while still maintaining a decent amount of shock absorption. A great variety of colors as well.

I use the black/blue one, but I debated on black/red for a while. I've liked the Candyshells since using a 3G with a Candyshell on it years ago. I use the Pixelskin on my iTouch 4 and like it, but I love the Candyshells.

I use a Sena Walletcase. It's a phone case that also is a wallet. So now I don't have to carry a wallet or worry about it falling out if my back pocket when I sit down.

Of course, the downside is that I'm REALLY fucked if I ever lose my phone/wallet.
But I find that an acceptable risk for the convenience of the thing.

I've been buying every iteration of it ever since I dropped my first iPhone (OG) a few years ago and had the glass shatter.
