Too bad they don't have Arma 2 on the store. Who will be the first to capitalize on the popularity of the DayZ mod?

Already done, not many fence-sitters need Arma 2. We're happy to spend full price for a real experience. The $10 casuals have no place in Arma 2!

Yes, but it could do more. I know 5 people just waiting for any kind of Arma 2 sale just to give DayZ a try.

Torin's Passage! I have a physical copy, but I'll probably buy this too. I wonder how they managed to pry open Activision's vaults. Well, I'm glad they did.

Given this and QFG last week, it looks like they're going through a second wave of Sierra stuff. I wonder if the wry aside in the news post for this release:

Quote:
Even though Torin’s Passage was created by a Al Lowe, famous for King’s Quest III (available on GOG.com), Police Quest (available on GOG.com), and Leisure Suit Larry (available on GOG.com--no, just kidding.),
...means that LSL might be on the way. From my standpoint, though, I'm more interested in the smaller series; Laura Bow and the Conquests titles. Here's hoping they put in an appearance!

Fun fact: The Conquests games are available FREE from the author's website. I emailed GOG about this, suggesting that it could make for another good freebie hook (a la Steel Sky) to suck people in, and got this (infuriating) canned response:

Quote:
Thank you very much for your kind feedback, however I'm afraid that I can't comment on whether or not we'll be releasing certain titles. I can only assure you that we're doing everything possible to get our hands on the best games, both old and new.

Unfortunately the process is very complex and difficult. Not all publishers wish to sell their back catalog, not all can be convinced that "no DRM" is a good idea, and sometimes it's just plain impossible to research who (if anyone) has the rights to a certain title. Getting an old game to work on modern systems often proves to be the easiest task.
Check out this Q/A video, featuring one of my superiors - Marcin Iwinski, for a first-hand view of how it works:
http://www.youtube.com/user/GOGcom#p/u/17/mrk7R5mSgzI

Finally, please stay tuned and check out our news page every week for new release info.
Honestly, couldn't give two shits whether they release it or not. I can play it for free via DOSbox or ScummVM or whatever. I was thinking in their best interests and I get that for a reply. It was only two days ago, too.

Edit: Link to Christy Marx's website with download for Conquests of Camelot. You can also get the sequel from there, too.

What were you expecting, a pat on the back for suggesting it? Just because the developer can release it free doesn't mean GOG can.

Not a pat on the back, but a little more than a canned response that they dish out to everyone who requests X game. Even an "Interesting idea", nothing more, would've been better than what was sent.

Does Christy Marx actually have the rights to the conquests games? Did she buy them when Sierra went belly up? Seems like she's just doing what abandonware sites do and hoping the copyright holder won't care enough to seek legal action.

No idea. Just figured that if she had such close ties with the game and had them up for d/l on her website, she'd know something we didn't. It also makes for a decent foot-in-the-door compared to just cold-asking devs about long-lost games.

Mildly interesting from the Xenonauts Kickstarter:

Quote:
Yes, we've looked into GOG but we weren't able to agree a price point.
Curious about that. Wondering which side was being demanding. They're suggesting the intended retail price is $25, I wonder if that's too high for GoG without coupling it with some sort of preorder discount.

Conquests of Camelot and Conquests of Longbow are still property of Sierra (now Activision). The original Sierra employees do not own those games. So putting them out for free is actually illegal, even for them.

Al Lowe did also something like this. Was still not legal. No one sues, because probably no one cares much.

That is really infuriating. It's funny, because there's an obvious best practice when it comes to this--use a web contact form, when the person clicks submit, auto-detect the intended question, show the person the Q&A, ask "Is this what you wanted to ask?", and if they select No, make sure a human writes them back.

That's the automated response they send to any request.

I asked for Darklands a while back and got that annoying response. A couple of months later they released it!
They probably were intending to anyway but couldn't tell me.

Not to derail this thread but I agree about canned responses. I recently had to ask for a refund because an online shop hadn't provided my goods almost 4 weeks after taking my money. When they emailed to tell me that the refund had been actioned, they said that were sorry that the products I bought did not meet my expectations.

*sigh* Really, it was the icing on the cake of the whole affair.

Okay, sorry, once again for the derail. You may all continue.

It's especially infuriating when it's more for their benefit than yours. They're awesome with everything else, I was genuinely surprised when it was bounced back in such a manner.

Up today:

Dreamfall. $15, which strikes me as a little on the high side.

Also, American Nightmare comes out later, it's the last chance to get the discounted preorder in.

It's definitely high. I guess they count it as a new-ish game, not an oldie.

Still nicely cheaper from Europe though, it's 20 Euros on Steam and GamersGate...

RETROACTIVELY ALREADY BOUGHT BUT NOT YET!!

(Carmageddon + splat pack free to people who've donated $25 or more to the new Carmageddon, which I have done but won't pay until the project concludes)

I suspect this means Carmageddon 2 will head Gog's way too; it might end up being a higher-donation reward on the kickstarter at some point, or perhaps just on GoG.

I suspect this also means that we're quite likely to see the DRM-free version of the new title on GoG at some point, although it does require Steamworks for internet multi.

You know what to do.

It's the healthiest big-name big-target KS I've seen in a fair while; I'm thinking maybe $750k when all's said and done, provided there's still interest for the stretch goals after they make the primary target.

(And, as Shaneus has just inadvertently indicated: This is a *really* smart bit of promotion for the KS project)

Well, I only knew of the KS via you a few posts up, but it seems like they've their heads screwed on straight regarding it. It's the sort of title that wasn't big budget when it was first released, so it doesn't need to have millions thrown at it now. Reassuring to hear they used Fear Factory in their KS vid too, must mean they have the license for it (either for the KS project, the original game or just in general).

They'd be mad not to use this, either:
Fear Factory - Cars

Is there an OT for the KS?
