All this talk of going back a bit from RDR setting I just can't agree with. The gold rush and such would be essentially the same palette just mapped differently. I feel like R* likes to do different things often enough where I don't see anything like that anytime soon and not repeating settings unless it graphically supersedes the predecessors to make it feel unique(akin to Liberty city in the past to IV is amazing). I feel like it would have to wait until at least next gen before we would see anything in a western setting again IMO.
I would definitely like to see a realistic futuristic game by them though like just about everyone is saying. I feel as long as it's not too futuristic it could be amazing.

I've always wanted to see Rockstar handle a setting like the cities from Minority Report and 5th Element. Maybe even a city like the one from Blade Runner, a metropolis with vertical exploration would be kick-ass. Add in the ability to visit planets much like the Phantasy Star series, and I think I would be in heaven.

The Terminator
It’d be interesting to see them try another gritty 80s licence, a la The Warriors, and I’ve always wanted to see an evolution of Bethesda’s open-world 1990 Terminator. Basically, you could choose to play as Kyle Reese and protect Sarah, or play as the Terminator and hunt them down, chasing them through 80s Los Angeles. It might be hard to make a lengthy single player mode out of it, but I bet you could. As the T-800, you get a perfect in-game excuse for a HUD: the classic Terminator UI, which lets you scan everything and gives you dialogue options (Fuck you, asshole). You start naked and have to find fitting clothes - you will need to take care not to arouse suspicion, since situations can escalate easily; cops will be called, any killing will result in SWAT and eventually the army. Every time you take damage, it might expose some of your exoskeleton, so you need to keep stocked on medical supplies. You will need to acquire weapons either by stealing (risky) or buying, which has its own set of problems. And since there is no Internet in the 80s, you will need to go by the phonebook and kill each Sarah Connor one by one. If you wanted to stretch it out, you could have a secondary mission to wipe out Connor’s future generals as well (i.e. T3). You could even have other Terminators to fight. As Reese, the game is about pure survival. You can use the same tactics as the T-800 - e.g. you might rob a store for the cash to buy guns. Or you might break into the military supply depot. Your only hope is to keep moving, and think of a creative way to destroy the Terminator. Try to lead it into a factory or steel mill like in the movies; try to run it over with a train; try to blast it with a stolen tank. Or be more careful and whittle its health down through long-term hit and run tactics. The interiors are procedurally generated, so you could try to hide out in a random apartment, but once the Terminator gets on your tail, it will be difficult to lose. Maybe you can try to escape on a plane via LAX, or a road trip to the outskirts of the city? The multiplayer is obvious. You can design your Terminator to blend into crowds (think Mass Effect or Skyrim character customization). Make the modes asymmetrical, so that there are more humans to take on the Terminators. Hell, why not have a Terminator vs Terminator deathmatch, with full-on building destruction? If that’s not enough content, the second half of the game could be based on T2 - either play as Sarah/T800 or the T-1000, who has the ability to shapeshift into anyone or anything.

How would you do prison though?
I actually had an idea a long time ago fora bit of a sub-franchise exploring prisons from all over the world and different time periods: Modern California prison, Soviet Gulag, etc. Mexican and El Salvadorian prisons might be especially interesting. |

Also it'd probably end up being the most controversial thing ever, and would have to be handled with surgical precision to avoid the risk of offending anyone... but an open-world survivalist game where you play as an escaped slave trying to make your way to freedom in the Antebellum South would be incredible.
