Im sorry i need to rant, cancelled TV shows #1

earlier on this year there was a little gem called Tera Nova, it was suppose to be "the new lost". while it was not it was still a very good show, with an interesting story, and i thought very good characters on the show. But because this "didnt live up to demand" it got canceled... Not ever show is going to have 10-20 million viewers each week... Why kill a show that has so much potential to be one of the biggest hits.

Then came along an other show that was suppose to be the "new lost" Alcatraz. They used some of the same characters, an island, and tried to make it a mystery. While the show did loose track and changed what was going on during the middle of the season it was still a good show and the suspense behind it was continuing to grow... and what do they do? end the series <spoiler>with the main character dying :\ </spoiler>

Then, finally a good show, that has nothing to do with Lost, Awake comes. A very interesting story with a good amount of action and drama in it. I have been watching this show every week and have been enjoying it very much. Im very pissed that they are ending this show even though ive heard it been doing decent in the ratings. But because this isnt "the hit" they were looking for they are going to complete cancel the series? such crap :(

If they cancel person of interest i am done watching new tv shows for ever. I hate getting wrapped up in a show and then it being complete over with nothing resolved and pretty much just wasting my time. Here is a little advice to all the networks out there... stop basing your shows off of lost, just because its not bringing in 10's of millions of people does not mean its a bad show. Lost did great because it was one of the first, with a great story, and good writing (some seasons, not all lol)

Thats all i have to say, im just a little sad that im losing these shows... and also House :( lol

yeah thats what i have been doing but these tree shows really stuck out to me and i wanted to watch them.

Ive been thinking of getting in game of thrones since ive heard good things about it. I also stopped watching Chuck and fringe when they were in about season 3 so i have been meaning to catch up on those as well.

Its just annoying when shows with great potential are cut short.

Yeah, I am still heated about Awake, especially with last week's episode still fresh in my mind. I haven't watched last night's yet, but I am sure it is going to be excellent.

NBC is a terrible network and there is a good reason why they are 4th. Comcast is only going to make it worse looking for every show to be an absolute hit from the very beginning.

Awake's ratings were abysmal. But anyone who knew anything about the TV industry knew that show was doomed from the start; high concept dramas typically don't generate high enough ratings on broadcast TV to stick around. Lost is really one of the few exceptions.

Game of Thrones will be on for a while, so you can start watching without fear of cancellation (and if it does eventually get canceled, there is always the books).

Also, why did you post this in the OT Community section?

Fox killed firefly.

Amof, most stations don't give sci fi a chance especially if it is slow building. Something about the cost of the shows being an issue.

Daybreak, Flashforward, the event, defying gravity, Jericho, Jeremiah, surface, SGU, Firefly, so on and so forth, just shows that american studios love to start the shows but rarely let them get to the end of the tale they are trying to tell.

I cam into this thread to complain about that getting cancelled. I loved that show. I really try to stay away from new shows now because I know if I like it America wont. At least AD is coming back.

At least with FlashForward, you could point to really sappy dialogue, overacting and heavy-handed direction to why it didn't interest a lot of people. I thought the concept was awesome, but stopped watching 4 or 5 eps in because of the aforementioned points.

Awake, on the other hand, had tremendous everything. Don't worry, America, just put another CSI, NCIS, Law and Order and so on, that is what you want, after all.

Wow, OP and I have the exact same taste in TV shows. Really sucks that Terra Nova and Alcatraz were cancelled.

Also, FLASH FORWARD SHOULD HAVE BEEN GIVEN A SECOND SEASON! MARK BENFORD FTW!

Lastly, don't worry about POI getting cancelled OP. That show is a critical and commercial success. Best new show of 2011-2012.

Pretty much why I stopped watching TV awhile ago. Any interesting concept gets canned before it has a chance to really develop, while stupid family sitcoms and reality TV runs rampant.

It is exactly why I like British shows. They have a story, beginning to end. They know how they want to finish it, and then they do. No artificial stretching for syndication needs, no gradiose ideas with little substance to back them up, and no shows like Awake getting cancelled!

I miss Terriers deeply. That show was quality. Good thing is that it is on Netflix for people that missed it.

Recently I miss a slew of HBO shows, like Bored to Death and How to Make it in America. I know the latter has its haters, but i loved it and I miss it a lot.

The only good show OP listed was Awake. Alcatraz managed to make a story about prisoners of alcatraz coming back and fucking shit up boring. Also fuck the lead female in Alcatraz, such bad casting. Terra Nova managed to fuck up Dinosaurs.... which is reason enough to cancel it.

Alcatraz and Terra Nova were not good shows, and the latter was hugely expensive, which cost it dearly. Awake was a good show, not as expensive, but unfortunately it didn't do even decently in the ratings, it performed abysmally, and worse than many shows that NBC has previously cancelled in the same time slot.

All the cancellations were justifiable from a commercial standpoint. Unfortunately, from a critical or qualitative standpoint, it becomes a lot less easy to justify, particularly in the case of Awake.

I liked all the shows you mentioned but they did seem to suffer in writing after the first few episodes except maybe Awake. Justified, Game of Thrones and Downtown Abbey are all coming back and are exceptional.

Thats why I never watch tv shows until at least mid S2-> end of S2.

The exceptions for me were Community and Nikita which I watched mid S1 because I didn't think I would like them and just took a chance.

I'm still bitter they cancelled Sarah Conner, right at its absolute peak.

I agree on Terra Nova. That show had so much potential but it was some of the worst shit on TV. Alcatraz I liked. I'm not torn up over it though cause Fox has a history of killing shows after a season or two and it just wasn't one of those shows that made you go wow. It was more like the show that you watch cause there is nothing else you like at that time slot.

I am just glad FOX and WB came to terms to give Fringe a final season. I would be pissed after investing 4 years into that show for it to get canceled and not get a proper ending.

The only shows still on the air that I really care about now are:

Breaking Bad, Homeland, Game of Thrones, Spartacus, Person of Interest, and The Walking Dead.

I guess Dexter also, but that show is on its last legs and I really hope they plan ahead for a final season to wrap that series up soon. Breaking Bad's final season is coming up, and while I'm sad to see it go, it's at least getting a proper final season.

There were a few, but I was hoping to see lots.

I watched the whole season, but wouldn't say it was a great show. It did have potential, but they veered in to teen romance/family drama WAY too early, while the adventuring took a back seat. Still some good moments though.

Because it didn't have any potential at all to be a big hit. It premiered with 10 million viewers, which was already a bad sign and dropped to 7.5 million 11 episode later with its finale. If that show got a second season, it would flopped around at the 6 million mark. That is way too few eyes for a show that probably costs a fortune to produce (location shoots galore).

Alcatraz started with 10 million viewers, again, bad sign for any new major network drama, and that number dived to under 5 million after the first season. It was an absolute bomb. Of course it got cancelled. What did you want the network to do? Keep producing a show that has no audience?

Premiered with 6 million viewers, dropped to 2.1 million after 12 episodes. Even fucking cable shows do better than that. This is a major network drama. That show was dead on arrival.

They're not basing their shows off lost, they're basing their shows on how much money they can make, and dramas on major network can't make money without around 10 million viewers, and even then, that number fluctuates depending on demographic.

None of these shows were cancelled prematurely because the network thought "LOL, THEY'RE NOT DOING AS GOOD AS LOST, CANCEL CANCEL CANCEL", they were cancelled because they were doing atrocious. They barely had an audience, therefore there was no reason to keep them around.

Don't bitch about television ratings if you don't have a single clue about them.

I would usually bitch about shows getting canned before their prime but I've accepted a long time ago that executives don't care about the actual show nor the fan base. It's all about the green.

I was big into Family Guy in the early 00's. I totally missed season 2 but I picked up the dvds for $50 a pop a year after it was canned. Apparently I wasn't alone in doing this, As you know, the dvd sales were the only reason Fox brought it back. I suggest you go out and buy dvds because its the only to communicate with networks.
