Purple and black look pretty good together for me. Red works nicely as well. I feel sorry for people with the Black unit though; always looks so boring.

Picked mine up! It's absolutely gorgeous. It's a slightly darker shade than those E3 2010 demo units, but it's still fantastic.

No, the black top gives it a good profile and iconic look. That stick always looks out of place.

They're both awful. The purple model makes up for it somewhat, though. It's the closest the current 3DS models have gotten to actually looking exceptional.

yeah I don't like the black model at all. I'd pretty much be OK with any other colour currently available, but black is a no.

Same thing happened to me when I tried to take pics. It's definitely purple. A slightly darker shade than the E3 2010 demo units.

Nope, got one yesterday and it updated just fine.

As for my question about the bottom scratching/smudging the top - it doesn't appear to do that on these new units.

YMMV, but depending on use and treatment, the chances of scratches appearing have been reduced.

Still, using screen protectors is a must.
