LTTP: Dead Island
#1
I built my first ever gaming PC not too long ago, and downloaded Dead Island during my initial "kid in a candy store" steam purchase.
I'm really enjoying it so far, and I'm really glad the giant bomb guys did a quick look and described it as "Zombie Fallout" or I probably wouldn't have given it a second glance. The graphics are beautiful, and the sun-soaked beaches and bungalows are a welcome change from normal zombie game settings. Although the characters you come across are about as deep as a puddle, the voice acting is pretty good and they manage to mix in a bunch of different accents and whatnot. I also like that the game world is large, but still compact enough that I quickly learned my way around without having to constantly consult the map. Killing zombies is fun enough, things get plenty gory and I like that targeting limbs brings strategic advantages, but there honestly just aren't enough enemies. I rarely feel overwhelmed and I've been playing the game almost exclusively solo. I can't imagine how easy it would be if I were playing co-op. Also, out of nowhere I just got a cutscene where I went to investigate a downed chopper, and all of the other playable characters are all of a sudden at my side. Which obviously is not a huge deal, but it doesn't make any sense. Also, "Who do you voodoo, bitch" is a pretty sweet song, lol |

I never ended up playing cause we dicked around with a couple friends for about 6 hours and that was it
i should really give it a shot as an SP experience. Playing a game like this through online co-op with people you know is just too hard to manage. |

Without being much of a spoiler but rather a reason to keep up playing, it ain't all beachy.
If you have played Resident Evil 4, imagine the ganados on crack. They can make for some tense moments. The main difference is that the ganados were polite: "behind you imbecile!". These ones just make "AEEeeeoooOOaooaoaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"

Its really fun for the first few areas with friends, then you hit the first city and the game gets completely lame. The zombies suddenly become super hardcore and it takes 30 hits to die. It just takes away from the immersion completely.
It's fun to fight 'super' zombies once in a while, but they start turning up every 10 meters. . |

Yeah, no more infinite kicking. I initially was confused because a review I watched said it was the only attack that didn't use up stamina...but it totally does.

I would rate this game as ok. For the first 5 hours or so, I thought it was brilliant, but beyond that, it became pretty tiresome. "Go here, find this, bring it back." Do that a billion times throughout the game. That can only remain enjoyable for so long (at least for me).
If you thought the city was bad, you're in for a treat with the sewers. Worst section of the game by far. |

Bought it on release based on the trailer. I enjoyed the beach area but once I got to the city and then the sewers I called it quits and sold the game, it was just too damn frustrating when you're literally watching enemies spawn right in front of your character.

Same. It didn't help that there was barely any bgm. It was just one of those awkward mp games.

Dead Island is awesome. One of my favorite zombie games ever. Oddly enough I loved playing this in single player through several playthrus but I hate it in co-op.
I don't know if the DLC is any good though. I think it's kinda story related and with the story kinda sucking I'm not too interested in it. I do like thinking the story is just trying to survive and get off the island. Everything else I ignore. |

I was playing it solo for around 6 hours, and I was barely into it at all because I was doing like every mission I could, then I played co-op with a friend of mine and was chatting the whole time and totally lost what had happened in the story. I haven't played it since. Was a lot of fun up to that point, though!

It's a game that gets better as you play. Make weapons mods and such to help you. If you don't like the combat system, though, you'll be losing interest. I played about 40 hours so far. Started new game plus a bit ago and mess around once in a while still.

Was one of the best co-op experiences I've had last year, but I can see how the missions would get boring and very repetitive if you're ploughing through it solo. Analogue combat is what makes the game imho... always bear in mind, kicks are great for crowd control and dodging is key.

Some tips for you:
1) Play it in co-op. 100 times more fun that way. 2) When sidequests start to bore you, stop doing them. They're all fetch quests and the game is long enough anyway. 3) The beginning is the best part. The game gets more and more tedious the more you play, and the rest of the environments aren't as good. Final one is better than middle one though.

Dead Island melee combat > All other melee combat systems(Dark Messiah comes VERY close though)
Being able to select limbs and chop them off should be the norm for every game with melee combat onwards. Zombz, humans, monsters, everything should be able to have their limbs chopped off. |

Dead Island could have been a much better game than it was, even though I enjoyed it. I thought the enviroment design went lazy throughout the game though. The first part of the game near the beach was the best.

I played through to the end.Overall I had a great time but those moments where you got swamped by the fast running zombies really pissed me off. Anyway the constant search for better weapons and upgrading them kept me hooked to the end. I hope we get a sequel which polishes out all the flaws .Another annoyance was the way they handled the cutscenes but anyway can't wait for a sequel.

I started playing this for the first time not too long ago ago as well, and just barely into the city. I am shocked and how big this game seems to be, but to be fair I have done every side quest I can so far, the game is pretty addicting.
Edit: I will agree there have been some moments since I got to the city where all the sudden 10 or more infected are on you in a flash (I am torn on if feels cheap or I like the new since of danger). I now carry plenty of medkits everywhere I go.

one of the best co-op games evah. and infinite kicking was only required when the infected had a 100% chance to interrupt your swings.
I got a zombie army and you can't harm me Who do you voodoo, bitch? Drink blood like a vampire without warning Who do you voodoo, bitch? Stand up! Sam B got the thing that go bump in the night Who do you voodoo, bitch? Hide your kids, grab your wife, better get out of sight Who do you voodoo, bitch? Let's go! |
