Well with Dome City all done and dusted it is time for me to turn my attentions to another mega city I think. Not sure if it will be Triangle world or Dodecahedron world yet. However I am pretty sure I will need a hotel for all the slave labour I intend to use in a non-health and safety way. So I built one based on Dubai's Water Discus :- ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Well ok it "sorta" looks like the Water Discus Hotel. |

So I had been digging for a while near my house and I heard these slurrping noises. Couldnt figure what they were until I was mining and I hit something and there were no rocks below. I look down to see about 30 red eyes of which I think are spiders. I hate spiders.
Now what? Do I go below? Can I hit them from up top? |

Dumb question for noob player. How do I find lava? Dig deeper? Can I just pick it up or do I need a bucket (are buckets just for water?)?
I figured out how to make a bow and arrow. I see a fire below as well. I've killed a couple of them but dont know if there are all dead. Anything else I should know? I have an iron sword but thats about it. EDIT: I killed about 3-4 but there are still like 3-4 more. So not totally dead yet but Im out of arrows EDIT2: Holy ****. I just shot an arrow at one that was brown and black it made this weird noise that made me jump. ******* hate spiders. How many will there be? There's a green guy too I think making zombie type noises...? Will these guys die in sunlight should I dig holes for sunlight around them?

I do see fire inside a little blue cage. And I created a sun light path which killed the zombie. I dropped down and killed everything finding a chest with wheat, a bucket, and string. That was pretty cool to be honest. Damn, that was tense. |

Well damn. So much for that caving expedition. Was doing pretty well. I'd picked up a stack of coal and iron with a lot of stuff left behind me. Ran into 4 dungeons in this one cave/mine system so I ended up with a half stack of iron bars, a bucket which soon grabbed some lava and 1/3rd stack of gold thanks to a swanky new iron pick I crafted while I was down there.
Crafted myself a new iron sword to replace the stone sword that I had worn out and was feeling pretty good about everything! Then I turned a corner and ran into 3 cave spiders. :/ Don't really remember the specific path to get back there, but I'm gonna have to give it a shot. EDIT: Haha! I managed to get all my stuff before it despawned! I almost got caught be another cave spider while doing so. It hit me, but thankfully I avoided the poison and got away. Actually wasn't as hard to get back there as I thought it would be, didn't make a single wrong turn. I think I'll go drop this stuff off before I die again though... EDIT2: Found my first diamonds while trying to find my way out of that cave. Also I think I ran into the same cave spider again while searching for another exit that didn't involve going through him. Persistent little bastard he was. Thankfully he didn't kill me a second time. Ended up warping out when I got trapped in a dead end by a few of his friends come to avenge his death I think.

I just died. What do I do? I lost everything? What are those black things? I was swarmed by them when I wasn't looking. The green things that aren't zombies finished me off. Both of those killed me. Do I go back and get my stuff? That was annoying. I saw lava, wasn't sure how to pick it up with my bucket. I was really far down. Never been that far. I couldnt switch to my sword fast enough.

Items stay on the ground for a duration of five minutes when chunk is loaded. If the chunk isn't loaded, ie: no player present, the items "timer" will freeze until the chunk is loaded again. It's common to find a persons loot laying on the ground in less traveled areas as a result of this.

Yeah, the lava was moving so there was my problem. I know what spiders are and these weren't them. I think it's gone. There are a ton of zombies and a skeleton there and I don't know if I can get past them nor can I find where my stuff is at and I died again. I panicked, got scared, and died (again). :( I had torches everywhere too and even found an underwater river which was cool. This is why I hate SP games. Too scared at these block things. At least building with other people, I have people who can protect me. :p |

It's based off a design from PearSqurrel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pG91IfoyAw
Basically, it's two sets of pistons. One on top pushes down the fence when activated, then retracts. Then when I flip the switch, the second set of pistons pushes the gravel up and retracts. Since gravel is a falling block, once the pistons retract, the gravel falls back into the hole where it was before, the fence stays pushed up, and it's open. :) Did a short montage of the building part, but I haven't uploaded it yet. It also needs some decoration so it doesn't look so blocky, and I have to begin progress on the grand hallway that leads from there to the main tower of the fortress. All in due time, of course.

For example, I've spent hours over the last few weeks really digging into RedPower. I hadn't paid any attention to the mod for quite some time, and I thought it was still just wire and logic gates. It turns out that the mod's creator has added a bunch of new stuff to it, including a pneumatic tubes (for transporting items), pumps and fluid pipes (for pumping water and lava source blocks), and best of all Frames (more on those in a second). I started a new world and played it Survival style, as there are several new ores and materials added by the mod, and I was curious how well they fit in as far as mining goes. After a few weeks work, I've built a gravel-to-flint converting machine, an automatic obsidian generator, an automatic infinite cobblestone harvester, a sheep-shearing factory, and my current (and by far, the largest) project, a mining machine: ![]() Sure, it's a work in progress, and it's ugly as hell (and it's going to stay that way), but it's my baby. Those yellow, girder-like blocks that it's almost entirely built out of are called frames. By themselves, they do nothing, but when you add a frame motor (those green blocks in the middle of the second image), that's when great things happen. What a frame motor will do is move a frame one block in one direction (determined by the direction of the frame motor. However, when moved, a frame will also move all frames attached to the original one, and any blocks attached to those. So, that machine in the picture is actually two parts. There's all the various motors and guts on its base, and the tall arm and mining head, which can dig a good-sized square down into the earth: ![]() It takes about 4 minutes to bore from the surface all the way down to bedrock. All the materials that are dug up are sent via pneumatic tube to a group of chests on the machine's base, except cobblestone, dirt, and gravel are filtered out and discarded on the way. Eventually I'm aiming to get this thing mobile, so I can essentially drive it around from place to place and dig. There's a good overview of frames here. |
