Majority of Britons can't spell 'necessary' [Auto Correct Generation] #1

Source: The Telegraph UK

Quote:
Computer spell checks have created an ‘auto-correct generation’ unable to spell common words such as ‘necessary’ and ‘separate’, a survey has found.
Only one in five adults out of 2,000 who took a short spelling test were able to answer all five questions correctly.
Sixty-five per cent failed to spell ‘necessary’ correctly while 33 per cent struggled with ‘definitely’ and ‘separate’.

Respondents also admitted to extensive use of computer spell checks and auto-correct functions while writing emails and documents.
Eighteen per cent said they used spell checks all the time, while a further 21 per cent relied on them most of the time.

Despite this, Britons rate themselves as competent spellers, with 76 per cent describing their abilities as ‘very good’ or ‘fairly good’. Almost all those questioned believed spelling was important.
Students emerged as the worst spellers, with only 13 per cent getting all five questions in the test correct, against 21 per cent overall.
Women were better at spelling than men, with women aged 65 and over scoring the highest marks.

The survey, published today, was commissioned by Mencap to mark this week’s launch of its Spellathon competition, where children and adults are encouraged to test their spelling.
Mark Goldring, chief executive of the learning disabilities charity, said: ‘With over two thirds of Britons now having to rely on spell check, we are heading towards an auto-correct generation.
'This survey has highlighted that many Britons have a false impression about their spelling ability.
Today’s tough economic climate means that poor spelling on a CV is fatal, as it says that an individual cannot produce work to a given standard, no matter how highly qualified they might be. Language used by a company or person is a reflection of their attitude, capabilities and skill.’
Schools Minister Nick Gibb said: ‘The failure to test spelling – as well as grammar and punctuation – in exams over the past decade has been a costly one.
That is why we will award marks in these key disciplines in GCSEs from September. This summer we are also trialling a grammar, punctuation and spelling test for 11-year-olds.’
If that's for the British, what would it be for the Americans?!

Should really say "Majority of Britons can't spell 'arsed'". I mean "asked"? Really now Britons? Shame on you. I see people type it like that so many fucking times.

The big problem with relying on autocorrect is that it isn't always accurate. I can't count the number of times I've seen a flag for a misspelling I disagreed with (particularly in Firefox), tracked down a dictionary and discovered that I was right.

It bugs me when people take autocorrect at its word.

Seriously, "the _______ generation" is getting to be a horribly misused/overused phrase.

Why wouldn't they be? Auto correct has been around for years, there are most certainly children who have grown up with auto correct in word processors.

This.

I spell it definatelty all the time, then it auto corrects.

Necessary I learnt quite simply by single C, double S. Separately always comes out as seperatly

Whilst it is basic spelling, we aren't perfect!

One that gets on my NERVES is this current influx of people spelling lose as loose

Right, because nobody had any trouble spelling those words until spell-check came around. I'm sure that's definately the case.

"Adults" ranges from 18 -120 years. You consider this "a generation"?

I love the concept of X Generation, where X is some thing that the generation coining the name didn't have and where the meaning of the term is that the generation being described are dumber than the generation coining the term.

Hmm, I just realized that I used to (and still probably still do, in the back of my mind) think of "seperate" and "separate" as two different words, the former being a verb and the latter an adjective.

"Please seperate the cereal and marshmallows."
"I put them in two separate bowls."

This still kind of makes more sense to me because of how they're usually pronounced, but... eh.

Yup. When I type it quickly, 80% of the time I write 'Seperate'.

What a load of rubbish. This is published in the Daily Mail, which means the survey was probably done on OnePoll, an online survey website were people are payed pennies for each survey they fill in, people who take surveys on OnePoll just rush through them without thinking about the answers because that's the only way to get any amount of money worth your time. People likely just rushed though and typed in super quick, likely having typos, and spelling things poorly even though they know how to spell it because it's not worth the money to think about the answers or to correct something you have done wrong. You should not listen to any survey published in The Daily Mail, especially when they are commissioned by people who have an interest in the results coming out poorly.

"Definitely" being there surprised me. I can understand words like necessary and embarrassing.

I used to write 'separate' as 'seperate' quite a bit. Just did a quick GAF search actually and it looks like I finally figured it out in 2006.

Used to get it wrong until someone pointed out that you can break it down to "bureau(cracy)". Made it a lot easier.

I'm totally dyslexic with double lettered words - some I can remember, others I can never get the hang of. Necessary is one, mainly because I forget if it's the 'c' or the 's' that is doubled

No, that's only true when it's used as a verb. SEP -ER -ATE

And the noun form of separate isn't really used much, so I think you guys are thinking of the adjective, SEP -ER -IT.

[edit] I guess the verb form is SEP -UH -RATE and the adj/noun form is SEP -ER -IT

Wasting time here but needed to resolve that.
