I've had cats and dogs in the past, but at the end of the day I can't deny my inner Dog Personness. Cats are a good supplement but just can't replace a good dog.

I hate both IRL, they have enough weaknesses on their own. I'm more interested in the psychology of the pet owners, is it the closest to having a kid? These are huge animals, with their own health bills and needs. You're taking care of another's life. Is it for loners? Does a family need the extra responsibility of a pet, do they use the pet's death as a lesson for the kids to know what life is about? lol

Yep, Samoyed. I lived about a mile down a private road when I was a kid and more than once I got the school bus (which didn't go down the road) on a samoyed-powered sled. We had three of them and they were enormous idiots but very lovable dogs.

I think my parents still have pictures of all three of them laying out on the last patch of snow in the yard in springtime. One of them would also sleep under the bird feeder and let birds eat seed that had fallen onto him. Weird dogs.

Edit: Also my parents had someone make slippers and whatnot out of their fur. It makes surprisingly good cloth material.

I don't think that's a really fair comparison, since there's no way we're going to domesticate big cats anytime soon.

I mean the food bills alone would make them nonviable pets for all but the richest.

I'm not an owner of either pet. I used to own a dog long ago, and I have experience with my friends' cats, but that's it. So I admit my ignorance.

In this thread it looks like cats are winning, but again that's only because they are better as "toys" than dogs and are more ".gif-able." But captured in the right situation both sorts of pets are hilarious; the explosion of Caturday easily hands the advantage to cats in this area, though.

Put me in the dog+cat camp.

It's pretty much other way around. Cats are the ones that you can just throw outside and couple hours later let them inside again. With dogs you need to go outside with them for a walk that they do their business. For example my cat lives outside pretty much whole day during summers. Only comes to eat inside.
