I generally agree. Good, core-oriented games, released over a significant period of time, with no lapses in focus, would improve their perception.

Too much is being made of it, but I do understand the concern. "Wii" is a brand associated primarily with Sports and Fitness. If WiiU is intended as successor to Gamecube, that brand carries some baggage. But we don't really know Nintendo's intentions yet.

Something else to say, about Pachter's comments regarding "losing" the casual market...

While it's undeniable that casual gamers are doing the smartphone thing in the portable space and that it does need to be addressed, I've seen people say the same about the WiiU, as well.

But the problem with this thinking is that all the iPads and iPhones don't address something that the Wii does: a communal play experience. iPads and iPhones are solitary devices for solitary (and occasionally online) play. But people didn't buy the Wii to play by themselves, they bought it because they were sold on what is and always will be Nintendo's biggest strength: local multiplayer in groups. And as long as people still want that, there will always be a market for the Wii brand.

They lost money for two fiscal years in a row even with AC money, so probably yes. Only last year did they pull themselves out of the pit IIRC.

I think the "time" for AC3 is a lot longer as the development was started after Brotherhood was it? Well before Revelations was released.

I did find it interesting that the first half of the video is titled "Will GTA V Be at E3" - when the question isn't adressed until after the ad break. GT, you cheeky bastards.

I didn't know R* had stopped to go to E3 for the Hotcoffee scandal, seems like a stupid reason.
I always assumed it was more for the GTA3 fiasco:

And then, the early part of showing people the game--including E3 2001--was disconcerting because it was incredibly underwhelming. Because we thought it could be magical. Not the Holy Grail, but this thing that was 3D but open and expansive, combining elements of hardcore action, driving, adventuring--all these genres. Very cinematic and story-driven gameplay, this experience that's really unlike anything you've seen before. And people were scratching their heads around it! We were all, "Are we wrong?" There was enormous excitement around a few other games coming that fall. We went to E3 and everyone was obsessed by State of Emergency, and no one gave a crap really about GTA III. State of Emergency we thought was interesting, but not without its flaws--some of which never got resolved. But GTA III was already running, and we thought, "This is amazing!" But E3, I think, isn't the best place to show a game anyway, and that's definitely become solidified in our thinking since then.
